Most Underrated Band of All Time?
:: View email as a web page :: For the past 15 years, Manchester Orchestra has been one of the most popular emo bands on the planet. The one person who has been there every step of the way is founding singer-songwriter Andy Hull, who started the band when he was in his teens and has charted his own growing-up process with each album. Manchester Orchestra has also matured a lot over the years, evolving from an intense and volatile post-hardcore outt on albums like 2009’s Mean Everything To Nothing to the expansive and philosophical indie rock of their latest, The Million Masks Of God, which drops next week. Along the way, they’ve managed to somehow grow their audience while retaining committed fans who connected with the early records as teenagers, including famous acolytes like Phoebe Bridgers and Julien Baker. “Even though everything did well at that time, it wasn’t really accepted by critics and ‘cool’ people,” Hull recently mused about his back catalogue, “and that totally worked in our favor, because it still holds up. It sounds, to me, pretty timeless.” Ahead of the release of The Million Masks Of God, Hull reected on every Manchester Orchestra LP, candidly breaking down the myriad fascinating dramas that marked the process of making each record. Check it out here. -- Steven Hyden, Uproxx Cultural Critic and author of This Isn't Happening: Radiohead's "Kid A" and the Beginning of the 21st Century In case you missed it... RECENSIONES. STARMARKET, TEENAGE FANCLUB, HELLSONGS Y SANTI CAMPOS. -
Indie Mixtape HQ Is the Third 2011
:: View email as a web page :: In conversation, Phoebe Bridgers speaks in a deadpan SoCal accent and punctuates her blunt and hilarious observations with generous amounts of curse words. She sounds, in other words, utterly unlike her music, which tends to be quiet, contemplative, and gorgeous. Because of her gently murmuring vocal style — "I don’t sing with a lot of emotion, it’s almost an apathetic singing voice," she confesses — Bridgers tends to be cast as yet another sad-sack singer-songwriter out to jerk every last one of your tears. It’s precisely that image that made her 2017 debut Stranger In The Alps a slow-burn sensation, setting in motion a promising career that was further bolstered by her participation in two indie supergroups: Boygenius (with Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker) and Better Oblivion Community Center (with Conor Oberst). On her latest album, Punisher, due out on Friday, Bridgers goes deeper and weirder, writing with uncommon insight about the millennial condition. Check out Uproxx’s interview with her here. -- Steven Hyden, Uproxx Cultural Critic and author of This Isn't Happening: Radiohead's "Kid A" And The Beginning Of The 21st Century OPENING TRACKS HAIM This infectious and frequently canny pop-rock trio is known for making fun sing-along jams with splashy choruses that evoke the glory years of FM and Top 40 radio. They also have a good sense of humor, as evidenced by the title of their forthcoming LP due next week, Women In Music Pt. III. LISTEN MICHAEL STIPE KHRUANGBIN The venerable R.E.M. -

Season Two of the Rock 'N' Roll Apocalypse: the Light in the Darkness
Season Two of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Apocalypse: The light in the darkness As spring rolls around in the underground, glimmers of hope abound with vaccines, warmer weather and the gradual return of live music! On the negative is the return of mass shootings, but that is another conversation for another place between people who don’t listen to each other. One of the bright spots of the pandemic is a ton of people have spent it making music! I’m way behind on reviews, so let’s see how many I get through — more to come at a time and place that is uncertain. Jodie Treloar Sampson — I Thought I Was Dead, but I Was Really Alive (75orLess Records) The second EP from Jodie Treloar Sampson is absolutely vibrant! “Water” opens like a campfire lullaby then flows into something more. “Cotton Candy Girl” navigates the nostalgia of youth and how time changes us. It kind of reminds me of post-modern ’70s folk. Timeless is probably more accurate, but I get paid the big bucks to make up genres that don’t exist. “Pangea” rocks against the continental drifts of a past relationship with searing lines like, “All I know is what I feel and it’s all too fucking real, going to make this good as a death row meal.” My favorite is the ballad “Fits and Starts” because the sparse instrumentation of the piano and percussion allows one to sway in the glow of Sampson’s vocals. I Thought I Was Dead, but I Was Really Alive is available on all the streaming sites. -
