August 2012 Newsletter
August 2012 Newsletter ------------------------------------ Yesterday & Today Records P.O.Box 54 Miranda NSW 2228 Phone: (02) 95311710 Email:[email protected] www.yesterdayandtoday.com.au ------------------------------------------------ Postage Australia post is essentially the world’s most expensive service. We aim to break even on postage and will use the best method to minimise costs. One good innovation is the introduction of the “POST PLUS” satchels, which replace the old red satchels and include a tracking number. Available in 3 sizes they are 500 grams ($7.50) 3kgs ($11.50) 5kgs ($14.50) P & P. The latter 2 are perfect for larger interstate packages as anything over 500 grams even is going to cost more than $11.50. We can take a cd out of a case to reduce costs. Basically 1 cd still $2. 2cds $3 and rest as they will fit. Again Australia Post have this ludicrous notion that if a package can fit through a certain slot on a card it goes as a letter whereas if it doesn’t it is classified as a “parcel” and can cost up to 5 times as much. One day I will send a letter to the Minister for Trade as their policies are distinctly prejudicial to commerce. Out here they make massive profits but offer a very poor number of services and charge top dollar for what they do provide. Still, the mail mostly always gets there. But until ssuch times as their local monopoly remains, things won’t be much different. ----------------------------------------------- For those long term customers and anyone receiving these newsletters for the first time we have several walk in sales per year, with the next being Saturday August 25th. -

Season Two of the Rock 'N' Roll Apocalypse: the Light in the Darkness
Season Two of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Apocalypse: The light in the darkness As spring rolls around in the underground, glimmers of hope abound with vaccines, warmer weather and the gradual return of live music! On the negative is the return of mass shootings, but that is another conversation for another place between people who don’t listen to each other. One of the bright spots of the pandemic is a ton of people have spent it making music! I’m way behind on reviews, so let’s see how many I get through — more to come at a time and place that is uncertain. Jodie Treloar Sampson — I Thought I Was Dead, but I Was Really Alive (75orLess Records) The second EP from Jodie Treloar Sampson is absolutely vibrant! “Water” opens like a campfire lullaby then flows into something more. “Cotton Candy Girl” navigates the nostalgia of youth and how time changes us. It kind of reminds me of post-modern ’70s folk. Timeless is probably more accurate, but I get paid the big bucks to make up genres that don’t exist. “Pangea” rocks against the continental drifts of a past relationship with searing lines like, “All I know is what I feel and it’s all too fucking real, going to make this good as a death row meal.” My favorite is the ballad “Fits and Starts” because the sparse instrumentation of the piano and percussion allows one to sway in the glow of Sampson’s vocals. I Thought I Was Dead, but I Was Really Alive is available on all the streaming sites. -
Alt-Nation: Breaking Through All Over
Alt-Nation: Breaking Through All Over We start this week off with some sad news: that Dave Lamb of Brown Bird is still battling leukemia. The band has been unable to earn a living for almost a year now due his illness. Thankfully friends and fans have rallied to the cause with generous donations to help them get by in what has been a terrible ordeal. If you’d like to donate to the cause, please visit brownbird.net for more info. No donation is too small. This month, with voting for our annual music poll in full swing, I thought we’d take a look at the bands up for Best Breakthrough Act. As in the case every year, there are some newer bands on the rise, veteran figures of the scene, and some bands where I don’t know how they made the ballot. The great thing about these polls is anyone can win. It’s not always the most deserving band or even the most popular band. It’s all about who can get out the most votes like anything else in America. Anyways here are our nominees for Breakthrough Band and don’t forget to vote at www.motifri.com. Gavage Gavage’s songs are reminiscence of 1970’s punk in the vein of The Adverts, early Damned, and Rocket From The Tombs. Loud guitars, vocals with a snarl, and they even recently augmented sound by adding a saxophone. Gavage play out regularly around town, including an appearance at last year’s Rocktucket Festival. Gavage are currently working on their debut release, which they’re recording at the home studio of another nominee, Jay Berndt’s. -

The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd The Rev. Morgan S. Allen September 30, 2018 Mark 9:38-50 Come Holy Spirit, and enkindle in the hearts of your faithful, the fire of your Love. Amen. Good morning! Her parents named her “Halleluiah,” but the kids all called her, “Holly.” If she scared you then she’s sorry, she’s been stranded at these parties, and these parties, they start lovely, but they get druggy, and they get ugly, and they get bloody … They wrote her name in magic marks on stop signs and subway cars. They’ve got a mural up on East 13th that says, ‘Halleluiah, Rest in Peace’ … Halleluiah was [in the hood frat] now you finally know that. She’s been disappeared for years, but today she finally came back …i So begins “How A Resurrection Really Feels” by songwriter Craig Finn. Finn’s catalogue imagines a twenty-first century successor to William Faulkner’s Yoknapatawhpa County, trading rural Mississippi for tales of the independent-music scene stretching from Brooklyn to Minneapolis, this young-adult world of distorted guitars and hard drugs … of bartenders, band loyalties, and bad decisions. Raised a Roman Catholic, Finn narrates this “scene” with a remarkable eye for suffering and redemption, an eye trained by his own experience – he confesses, all those “killer parties almost killed me.”ii In the course of his work, Finn often returns to this character of Halleluiah, iii a neighborhood girl who meets a guy, who starts running with the wrong crowd, and, as her drug use devolves from amusement to addiction, who finds herself swept across the country until, finally, she returns. -

If phoning please feel free to call after hours From 8.00am up until 7.00pm is fine. I have a couple of pieces of bad news. Firstly my dear mum, Rose Reid, passed away on February 23rd. Many knew her as she worked Wednesdays at the old Parramatta store from 1990-2000 and filled in when I went on buying trips. It has been a trying period but I can honestly say she loved her time in the shop especially meeting and talking to many fine people and was a keen music buff, something that has passed on through the genes. Secondly, we lost a dear friend in Norm Pyne. Many who went to the Parramatta store would have seen a blind guy getting round with only a cane. My admiration for Norm was limitless. I never considered him handicapped in any way and he was always thankful for his independence. It is a sad irony of life that it is probably this independence which saw him involved in an horrific accident which cost him his life. -
