Juliana Hatfield Three, the Cavedogs, Craig Finn, Eli “Paperboy” FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Juliana Hatfield Three, The Cavedogs, Craig Finn, Eli “Paperboy” Reed, Will Dailey and Al Kooper Added to All-Star Line-Up at 15th Anniversary Hot Stove Cool Music Benefit Concert BOSTON (December 12, 2014) – The first performance by the Juliana Hatfield Three in nearly two decades, the return of The Cavedogs and performances by Craig Finn (The Hold Steady), the legendary Al Kooper and Tanya Donelly and Gail Greenwood of Belly highlight an all-star evening of music and baseball talk at the 15th anniversary Hot Stove Cool Music charity concert, presented by Walmart and Mintz Levin, which will be held at the Paradise Rock Club on Saturday, January 10. The show raises funds for the Foundation To Be Named Later (FTBNL), which supports local non-profits that benefit at-risk youth. Doors open at 7 p.m. VIP and general admission tickets are on sale now at FTBNL.org. VIP tickets include a pre-show party featuring artist meet-and-greets and mouthwatering dishes from select Boston-area restaurants. The event will be emceed by actor/comedian/writer Mike O’Malley. The FTBNL has granted more than $6.5 million to 200 deserving non-profit agencies. FTBNL also supports 46 under-resourced students from the Boston area at four-year colleges around the country. Chicago Cubs President of Baseball Operations Theo Epstein and Hall of Fame baseball journalist Peter Gammons host the event and also perform with the Hot Stove All-Stars, featuring Bill Janovitz (Buffalo Tom), Mike Gent (The Figgs), Kay Hanley (Letters To Cleo), Eli “Paperboy” Reed, The Gravel Pit, Will Dailey, Jen Trynin, Phil Aiken, Len Kasper (Chicago Cubs broadcaster) and others. Additional guest stars will be announced at a later date. “With Juliana, The Cavedogs, Al Kooper and Craig Finn complementing the already-stellar line-up, this concert is shaping up to be one to remember,” said Gammons. “We’re thankful for the generosity of the amazing musicians, athletes and personalities that continue to donate their time, effort and energy to help raise much needed funds for our area’s disadvantaged youth.” The Juliana Hatfield Three will be reforming with the original lineup of Hatfield (guitar, vocals), Todd Philips (drums) and Dean Fisher (bass). Their 1993 album Become What You Are helped influenced a generation of young bands and featured hits “My Sister” and “Spin The Bottle.” The group recently recorded the follow-up release, Whatever, My Love, which will be released February 17, 2015 on American Laundromat Records. A North American Tour is expected to follow in February and March. The Cavedogs released two critically-acclaimed albums (Joy Rides For Shut-Ins and Soul Martini) in the early 1990s and have only performed a handful of reunion shows over the past 20 years. Original members Mark Rivers (drums, vocals), Brian Stevens (guitar, vocals) and Todd Spahr (bass, vocals) reunite for HSCM. Kooper has performed with the likes of The Rolling Stones, The Who, Jimi Henrix, B.B. King, Alice Cooper and Cream. He is credited with discovering Lynyrd Skynyrd and he produced and performed on their first three albums, which included hits like “Sweet Home Alabama” and “Free Bird.” Kooper has also released more than a dozen solo albums and composed for many successful film soundtracks. Finn, who is a graduate of Boston College, and The Hold Steady have released six full albums since 2004, including the last three that have cracked the Top 30 on the US charts (Stay Positive, Heaven Is Whenever, Teeth Dreams), as well as six EPs. Since its inception in 2000, Hot Stove Cool Music events have raised $6.5 million for Theo and Paul Epstein’s FTBNL. Proceeds benefit the Foundation’s Peter Gammons College Scholarship fund and non- profit beneficiaries including BELL (Building Educated Leaders for Life), Citizen Schools, City Year Boston, The Home for Little Wanderers, Horizons for Homeless Children, Roxbury Youthworks, Steps to Success and West End House Boys & Girls Club. Hot Stove Cool Music is sponsored by Mintz Levin, Ipswitch, Walmart, RISO, Comcast, A&G, Elevate Communications, Jam Spot, Harpoon Brewery, Hotel Commonwealth, KPMG, Rodney Strong, Tito’s Handmade Vodka and New Balance. ABOUT HOT STOVE COOL MUSIC Hot Stove Cool Music is a biannual charity concert held in Boston in Boston each January and in Chicago every June. The event was created in 2000 by Hall of Fame-honored baseball journalist Peter Gammons and former Boston Herald sportswriter Jeff Horrigan. Hot Stove Cool Music has raised more than $7 million for the Jimmy Fund and the Foundation To Be Named Later. ABOUT FOUNDATION TO BE NAMED LATER (FTBNL) Foundation To Be Named Later (FTBNL) was launched in 2005 by Paul Epstein, a social worker in the Brookline public school system, and his twin brother, Theo (former Boston Red Sox EVP and GM). Named after the MLB trade term “player to be named later,” the mission of FTBNL is to raise funds and awareness for non-profit agencies working on the front lines serving disadvantaged youth and families. FTBNL invests in programs that teach leadership, education and healthy development of families. FTBNL has given more than $6.5 million in grants and in-kind donations to more than 200 non-profit organizations. The Peter Gammons/FTBNL College Scholarship is the FTBNL signature program and has sent nearly 50 young people with high financial needs and high educational potential to the college of their choice. Each Gammons Scholar gets an adult mentor and a laptop computer to ensure college success. For more information, visit or ftbnl.org. Contact: [email protected] .

Peter Gammons: The Cleveland Indians, best run team in professional sports March 5, 2018 by Peter Gammons 7 Comments PHOENIX—The Cleveland Indians have won 454 games the last five years, 22 more than the runner-up Boston Red Sox. In those years, the Indians spent $414M less in payroll than Boston, which at the start speaks volumes about how well the Indians have been run. Two years ago, they got to the tenth inning of an incredible World Series game 7, in a rain delay. Last October they lost an agonizing 5th game of the ALDS to the Yankees, with Corey Kluber, the best pitcher in the American League hurt. They had a 22 game winning streak that ran until September 15, their +254 run differential was 56 runs better than the next best American League team (Houston), they won 102 games, they led the league in earned run average, their starters were 81-38 and they had four players hit between 29 and 38 homers, including 29 apiece from the left side of their infield, Francisco Lindor and Jose Ramirez. And they even drew 2.05M (22nd in MLB) to the ballpark formerly known as The Jake, the only time in this five year run they drew more than 1.6M or were higher than 28th in the majors. That is the reality they live with. One could argue that in terms of talent and human player development, the growth of young front office talent (6 current general managers and three club presidents), they are presently the best run organization in the sport, especially given their financial restraints.

  • Season Two of the Rock 'N' Roll Apocalypse: the Light in the Darkness
Season Two of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Apocalypse: The light in the darkness As spring rolls around in the underground, glimmers of hope abound with vaccines, warmer weather and the gradual return of live music! On the negative is the return of mass shootings, but that is another conversation for another place between people who don’t listen to each other. One of the bright spots of the pandemic is a ton of people have spent it making music! I’m way behind on reviews, so let’s see how many I get through — more to come at a time and place that is uncertain. Jodie Treloar Sampson — I Thought I Was Dead, but I Was Really Alive (75orLess Records) The second EP from Jodie Treloar Sampson is absolutely vibrant! “Water” opens like a campfire lullaby then flows into something more. “Cotton Candy Girl” navigates the nostalgia of youth and how time changes us. It kind of reminds me of post-modern ’70s folk. Timeless is probably more accurate, but I get paid the big bucks to make up genres that don’t exist. “Pangea” rocks against the continental drifts of a past relationship with searing lines like, “All I know is what I feel and it’s all too fucking real, going to make this good as a death row meal.” My favorite is the ballad “Fits and Starts” because the sparse instrumentation of the piano and percussion allows one to sway in the glow of Sampson’s vocals. I Thought I Was Dead, but I Was Really Alive is available on all the streaming sites.
