Aristotle, Selection from Rhetoric (Book I, Part 2) Aristotle, selection from Rhetoric (Book I, Part 2) Written about 350 B.C., these three terms—logos, ethos, and pathos—still form the basis of rhetoric as it is taught considerably more than two thousand years later. Of the modes of persuasion furnished by the spoken word there are three kinds. The first kind depends on the personal character of the speaker; the second on putting the audience into a certain frame of mind; the third on the proof, or apparent proof, provided by the words of the speech itself. Persuasion is achieved by the speaker’s personal character when the speech is so spoken as to make us think him credible. We believe good men more fully and more readily than others: this is true generally whatever the question is, and absolutely true where exact certainty is impossible and opinions are divided. This kind of persuasion, like the others, should be achieved by what the speaker says, not by what people think of his character before he begins to speak. It is not true, as some writers assume in their treatises on rhetoric, that the personal goodness revealed by the speaker contributes nothing to his power of persuasion; on the contrary, his character may almost be called the most effective means of persuasion he possesses. Secondly, persuasion may come through the hearers, when the speech stirs their emotions. Our judgments when we are pleased and friendly are not the same as when we are pained and hostile. It is towards producing these effects, as we maintain, that present-day writers on rhetoric direct the whole of their efforts. This subject shall be treated in detail when we come to speak of the emotions. Thirdly, persuasion is effected through the speech itself when we have proved a truth or an apparent truth by means of the persuasive arguments suitable to the case in question. There are, then, these three means of effecting persuasion. The man who is to be in command of them must, it is clear, be able (1) to reason logically, (2) to understand human character and goodness in their various forms, and (3) to understand the emotions—that is, to name them and describe them, to know their causes and the way in which they are excited. Winston Churchill, selections from his speech to the House of Commons on 18 June 1940 On 10 May 1940, Germany began a massive attack against Holland, Belgium, Luxembourg, and France. Defending those countries were the British Expeditionary Force along with the French, Belgian, and Dutch armies. After just a few weeks, Hitler’s armies won victories on all fronts. Holland, Luxembourg, and Belgium surrendered by the end of May. Paris fell on 14 June. Three days later, France sued for peace. With the realization that Britain now stands alone against Germany, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill gave the following speech in the House of Commons on 18 June 1940. The disastrous military events which have happened during the past fortnight have not come to me with any sense of surprise. Indeed, I indicated a fortnight ago as clearly as I could to the House that the worst possibilities were open; and I made it perfectly clear then that whatever happened in France would make no difference to the resolve of Britain and the British Empire to fight on, if necessary for years, if necessary alone… We do not yet know what will happen in France or whether the French resistance will be prolonged, both in France and in the French Empire overseas. The French Government will be throwing away great opportunities and casting adrift their future if they do not continue the war in accordance with their treaty obligations, from which we have not felt able to release them. The House will have read the historic declaration in which, at the desire of many Frenchmen—and of our own hearts—we have proclaimed our willingness at the darkest hour in French history to conclude a union of common citizenship in this struggle. However matters may go in France or with the French Government, or other French Governments, we in this Island and in the British Empire will never lose our sense of comradeship with the French people. If we are now called upon to endure what they have been suffering, we shall emulate their courage, and if final victory rewards our toils they shall share the gains, aye, and freedom shall be restored to all. We abate nothing of our just demands; not one jot or tittle do we recede. Czechs, Poles, Norwegians, Dutch, Belgians have joined their causes to our own. All these shall be restored. What General Weygand called the Battle of France is over. I expect that the Battle of Britain is about to begin. Upon this battle depends the survival of Christian civilization. Upon it depends our own British life, and the long continuity of our institutions and our Empire. The whole fury and might of the enemy must very soon be turned on us. Hitler knows that he will have to break us in this Island or lose the war. If we can stand up to him, all Europe may be free and the life of the world may move forward into broad, sunlit uplands. But if we fail, then the whole world, including the United States, including all that we have known and cared for, will sink into the abyss of a new Dark Age made more sinister, and perhaps more protracted, by the lights of perverted science. Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duties, and so bear ourselves that if the British Empire and its Commonwealth last for a thousand years, men will still say, “This was their finest hour.” .

    Chapter One _________ A History of Model League of Nations in the United States The origin of intercollegiate simulations of international organizations in the United States can be traced back more than 90 years ago when Australian-born Professor Hessel Duncan Hall of the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University organized a two-day Model Assembly of the League of Nations on April 29-30, 1927.1 According to Professor Hall, the simulation of the Assembly of the League of Nations was “the first time that a Model League Assembly, participated in by a number of universities, has been held in the United States.”2 The New York Times reported that the precedents of the 1927 Model Assembly of the League of Nations at Syracuse University were similar conferences held previously in Great Britain and Japan.3 According to one report, the Oxford University branch of the League of Nations Union (LNU) organized a “model assembly” of the League of Nations in 1921. Foreign students studying at Oxford University participated in the “model assembly” as representatives of some 34 countries, including Australia and India.4 Another report indicated that thirteen student branches of the Japanese League of Nations Association “conceived the idea of holding in Tokyo a public session of a Model League of Nations” in 1925.5 The purposes of the Model Assembly of the League of Nations held at Syracuse University in 1927 were to “enable American and foreign students in New York State to meet for a frank discussion of urgent problems of international relations” and to “give them an opportunity of seeing in action the most important organization for world cooperation ever established.”6 The League of Nations organization, the predecessor of the modern United Nations (U.N.) organization, was established by the allied powers at the end of the First World War.

Forsyth, Advisor Training, equipment, and ideas about the nation shaped the British, French, and German soldiers’ experiences of war in 1914. Though current scholarship contained works that examined each of those topics separately or in combination, little research investigated the connection in a comparative model from the perspective of the soldiers. This work analyzed the British, French, and German soldiers of World War I during the initial phase (August--November 1914). This critical period of the war proved an excellent way to test these ideas. The project relied heavily on combatants’ personal accounts, which included archival sources. The troopers experience with initial combat served as a test. How those soldiers reacted suggested the connections with training, equipment, and ideas about the nation. The results supported the theory that the professionalism of the British soldier and the French soldier’s devotion to nation and comrade outweighed the German Army’s reliance on both equipment and the doctrine of winning at all costs. Nationalism, equipment, and training influenced soldiery. German equipment provided an edge, but it was not enough. Not only did nationalist sentiment among soldiers exist at the beginning of World War I, three different conceptions of nationalism were present.

These words are taken from the speech spoken by Prime Minister, Sir Winston Churchill delivered to Parliament at Westminster, “What General Weygand has called the Battle of France is over-- the Battle of Britain is about to begin. By December of 1941, America joined ranks and freedom prevailed! And now that darkest hour is indeed looked back upon as one of the most encouraging and inspiring times.
