    1. These particles exist in Kogut-Susskind varieties. One type of this particle can emerge as a Bogoliubov quasiparticle in superconducting materials and is named for Ettore Majorana. An atomic “condensate” version of these particles was created by a team led by Deborah S. Jin in 2003. The nucleus of a carbon-13 atom and baryons and leptons are these types of particles that follow Fermi-Dirac statistics and obey the Pauli Exclusion Principle. For ten points, name these particles that differ from bosons because of their half-odd integer spin. Answer = Fermions 2. One sect of these people that lived above the “Wild Fields” were known as the Zaporozhians. These people signed the Pereyaslav Agreement as well as a treaty with Emperor Rudolf II in the 1590s. Stenka Razin led an army of them. A five-year siege of Orenburg was done by one of these people named Yemelyan Pugachev. Their leaders were known as “atamans” and “hetmans” and these Orthodox Christian people commonly lived near the Dnieper and Don rivers. • Communicative Semiotics in Everyday Life (Cultural Criticism – the Image in the 21St Century)
Communicative Semiotics in Everyday Life (Cultural Criticism – the image in the 21st century) A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English School of Arts Brunel University June 2014 DALEL FIDOUH This thesis is dedicated with the deepest love and everlasting respect to my parents. ii Abstract What am I seeing? What does it mean? This thesis addresses the transformations in cultural life in the 21st century due to the cultural dominance of the image, which resulted from the radical change and enormous progress in the media, communication and the development of information systems in the world. All this has led to changes in the intellectual structure, and an increased tendency to drift in all areas, and the emergence of a society and a culture governed by the culture of shock. The fundamental issue concerning the image is an epistemological issue, as we cannot distinguish between the visual image and the semantic product. We live in a world surrounded with stunning and spectacular visual images. We are overloaded with images from all types in our everyday life. We probably see images more than we read words. This thesis provides an analytical framework for understanding how images produce meanings using the semiotic approach. Semiotics is the most important approach that can be used to analyze all types of images. Semiotic analysis addresses images as signs which communicate meaning. The symbols used in signs are often culturally specific. This thesis indicates the focus of the receiver to adapt to this visual cultural situation, to be able to grasp the content of the new cultural discourse as it is present in all the details of the receiver’s daily life.

  • Thinking the Flâneur in Late-Modern Societies Francisco Martínez
Beautiful Transgressions: Thinking the Flâneur in Late-modern Societies Francisco Martínez Introduction The present text1 has the objective of accounting for recent reincar- nations of the flâneur. The exercise is, therefore, to track this figure in late-modern societies. Also to re-think the notion of transgres- sion, changing in a world obsessed with changes, whereby limits appear increasingly loss and ‘think out of the box’ is stressed as a mean to innovation. Methodologically, I draw on multiple examples that help to reflect on contemporary transgressions as well as on classic authors that were inspired by the flâneur. Zygmunt Bauman (1994) enhances the rehearsing character of the original flâneur, its contingency of meaning, its playfulness, bringing about its own social order. And nonetheless, Bauman argues that the transforma- tion of this figure into a costumer is practically unavoidable: “at the end of the day, the dividing line has blurred. It is no more clear what (who) is the object of consumption, who (what) is the consumer” 1 Thanks to Marcos, Marika, Max, Patrick, Pille, Simon and Siobhan for their comments and encouragement while writing this text. 403 Hopeless Youth! Remediated Youth? (ibid.: 146). With certain drops of pessimism, Bauman claims that the contemporary flâneur has been reduced to a costumer in a mall or to a travelling player. He then concludes that today anyone with passionate eyes a heroic constitution would refuse being a flâneur (ibid.: 156). I will contest this opinion by giving contemporary exam- ples of flâneur-like acts that engage with the public space in a play- ful, transversal and affective interaction.

  • Why Is America So Punitive?
Why is America So Punitive? A Report on the Deliberations of The Interdisciplinary Roundtable on Punitiveness in America Held at John Jay College of Criminal Justice April 2-3, 2015 Authors: Bettina Muenster and Jennifer Trone March 2016 Supported By: Acknowledgements We would like to express our gratitude to the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation which has a long history supporting research that leads to social change. In this instance, the Foundation hoped that a cross-pollination of perspectives could unpack the phenomenon of punitiveness in the operations of the American criminal justice system and, more importantly, illuminate the path forward to a more humane and effective response to crime. The Roundtable thus joins a larger portfolio of research and programmatic initiatives at MacArthur that are designed to find ways to reduce America’s reliance on incarceration while promoting public safety and justice. About Us The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation supports creative people, effective institutions, and influential networks building a more just, verdant, and peaceful world. MacArthur is placing a few big bets that truly significant progress is possible on some of the world’s most pressing social challenges, including over-incarceration, global climate change, nuclear risk, and significantly increasing capital for the social sector. In addition to the MacArthur Fellows Program, the Foundation continues its historic commitments to the role of journalism in a responsible and responsive democracy; the strength and vitality of our headquarters city, Chicago; and generating new knowledge about critical issues. MacArthur is one of the nation's largest independent foundations.

FOR MONTHS, the team at Campo Santo has been hard at work on a secret project, and even I, the Campo Santo Ombudsman, could only guess at what they were up to in their San Francisco workshop. At night, I dreamed of them standing and administering to their creation, but now, the mystery of Campo Santo is a mystery no more, and the project has been given form and voice, and shape and name, and that name is FIREWATCH -- ! It is Firewatch. ! So what do we know about Firewatch? It is a video game, Campo Santo's first, to be released for personal computers in 2015. No longer will the name Firewatch be associated with fire safety equipment and fire and rescue software solutions. You can throw those brands in the garbage. ! Firewatch is a video game, perhaps the first video game, about being a fire lookout. The fire lookout is a solitary but dignified post, which in the history of American labor has been held by notable persons like Jack Kerouac and a man who was struck by lightning seven times. A closer look at that history appears later in this issue. ! Another likely video game first: Firewatch takes place in the state of Wyoming, where the Campos Santo Sean Vanaman and Nels Anderson each grew up.
