Gus Van Sant: Mala Noche For immediate release / July 9, 2007 FILMMAKER GUS VAN SANT RETURNS TO WEXNER CENTER TO INTRODUCE HIS RARELY SEEN FIRST FILM MALA NOCHE “A rhapsodic slacker noir!”—Nathan Lee, Village Voice on Mala Noche Gus Van Sant, the award-winning director of such films as Drugstore Cowboy, Good Will Hunting, Elephant, Last Days, and the upcoming Paranoid Park, returns to the Wexner Center Wednesday, August 1 at 7 pm to introduce a brand new 35mm print of Mala Noche, his little-seen debut feature. Tickets are $7 for the general public and $5 for Wexner Center members and students and go on sale July 10. Tickets can be purchased at the Wexner Center ticket office (614 292-3535) or Ticketmaster (614 431-3600) or Ticketmaster.com. Mala Noche Photo courtesy Janus Films Mala Noche, now receiving its first proper theatrical release, is a haunting story of unrequited love and culture clash between a convenience store clerk and the young Mexican illegal immigrant with whom he is infatuated. Shot in black-and-white, originally in 16mm, it is one of the key works from the independent filmmaking movement of the 1980s. The modest yet involving story is based on a novella by poet Walt Curtis. More information, including a trailer, is available at www.wexarts.org; more information on Mala Noche available at www.janusfilms.com/malanoche. Van Sant, no stranger to the Wexner Center, previously visited during a 2003 retrospective of his films, when he introduced a preview screening of Gerry, then his latest, to a capacity crowd of Wexner Center members. The Center also hosted the local premiere of his last film, the critically acclaimed Last Days in 2005. Gus Van Sant Regis Dialogue with Scott Macaulay, 2003 Scott Macaulay: We're here at the Walker Art Center for Regis dialogue with American filmmaker Gus Van Sant. He'll be discussing the unique artistic vision that runs through his entire body of work. Gus was first recognized for a trilogy of films that dealt with street hustlers, Mala Noche, Drugstore Cowboy, My Own Private Idaho. He then went on to experiment with forum and a number of other films including To Die For, Psycho and even Cowgirls Get the Blues. Gus is perhaps best known for his films, Goodwill Hunting and Finding Forrester, but all of his work including his latest film, Gerry, has his own unique touch. We'll be discussing Gus' films today during this Regis dialogue. I'm Scott Macaulay, producer and editor of Filmmaker Magazine. I'll be your guide through Gus' work today in this Regis dialogue. Thanks. Gus Van Sant: Thank you. Scott Macaulay: It's a real pleasure to be here with Gus Van Sant on this retrospective ... Which is called on the road again. I guess there are a lot of different illusions in that title, a lot of very obvious ones because a lot of Gus' movies deal with travel and change and people going different places, both locations within America but also in their lives. But another interesting implication of the title is that this retrospective is occurring on the eve of the release here and also nationwide of Gerry, which is really one of Gus' best and most moving films but it's also yet sort of another new direction for Gus as a filmmaker.

  • Santander Cultural Exibe O Primeiro Filme Do Diretor Gus Van Sant, Mala Noche, Inédito No Brasil

More significantly, in his work he represents homosexuality matter-of-factly. Back when Hollywood was still tip-toeing around the subject of homosexuality, Van Sant's low-budget feature Mala Noche (1985) burst onto the emerging gay and lesbian film festival scene with disarming frankness. Based on the then unpublished writings of Portland, Oregon poet Walt Curtis, the film told of the unrequited love of a skid row liquor store clerk (Tim Streeter) for a Mexican street hustler (Doug Coyote) and his more sexually available hustler pal (Ray Monge). Shot in 16mm black and white, it evidenced a talent of remarkable assurance, as well as bravery. Van Sant's confidence and courage have stood him in good stead in a career that has encompassed everything from films with high-profile superstars such as Sean Connery to music videos for groups such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Hanson, to a thoroughly bizarre shot-for-shot remake of Alfred Hitchcock's 1960 classic film Psycho (1998), to such intensely personal short works as the ineffable Five Naked Boys with a Gun (1992).
