www.oxfordshire.cricket Welcome to the 2016 summer programme The Ellandun Festival represents the start of the summer fixtures programme for the and Development squads. It is a long awaited opportunity for players to express the cricketing skills that they have dedicated the winter to developing under the passionate guidance of their coaches. We are incredibly proud of the festival and the role it plays in the development of our players. The diversity of formats forces players to adapt their skills in a variety of contexts and the Wessex/ Mercia split brings with it a competitive rivalry. It also provides a platform for players to put together performances as they push for selection for the Saxons (best of development) tours and County Squads. We hope you all have a fantastic week, enjoying your cricket whilst developing your game in a match environment. I look forward to seeing some of you throughout the week.

Seven Kingdoms fought for control of the land: battles were won and lost, borders shifted to and fro, and the balance of power swung back and forth. The fields of Oxfordshire were often the front line, as rival factions scrambled for control of the all-important Ridgeway, an ancient trackway that linked the Thames with several hillforts (ancient strongholds) and important religious sites. Throughout the eighth century, the Kingdom of Mercia was dominant. Mercia’s crowning glory was the construction of Offa’s Dyke, a great earthwork stretching for much of the length of the border between England and Wales. After Offa’s death in 796, however, Mercia’s power began to wane as the Kingdom of Wessex grew in power. In 825, the two Kingdoms fought their greatest and most decisive battle, at Ellandun, where Egbert of Wessex defeated Beornwulf of Mercia, ending the Mercian Supremacy and establishing Wessex as the most powerful of the Seven Kingdoms – a position which it retained through the next 200 years, until the Norman Conquest and the Battle of Hastings in 1066.

The tables turned on day two, as the Wessex batting ensured a flurry of victories – nine wins to U13: Mercia win 11-6 Mercia’s three, taking the scoreline to 41½-30½ and U14: Mercia win 14-4 meaning that Mercia would need four outright wins from the six matches on day three to take the title. U15: Wessex win 10½-7½ Mercia U10 started the comeback, with their spin twins prompting a lower-order collapse and setting up victory in double-quick time. Wessex were not daunted, however, and a brace of victories at U11 and U13 made the scoreline 53½-36½: The gap was then reduced to five points leaving the title to be settled at Bicester.
