Tropical Malady: Film & the Question of the Uncanny Human-Animal
etropic 10(2011): Creed, Tropical Malady | 131 Tropical Malady: Film & the Question of the Uncanny Human-Animal “The tiger trails you like a shadow/ his spirit is starving and lonesome/I see you are his prey and his companion” – Tropical Malady. Barbara Creed University of Melbourne Abstract The acclaimed Thai film, Tropical Malady (2004), represents the tropics as a surreal place where conscious and unconscious are as inextricably entwined. Directed by Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Tropical Malady presents two interconnected stories: one a quirky gay love story; the other a strange disconnected narrative about a shape-shifting shaman, a man-beast and a ghostly tiger. This paper will argue that from it beginnings in the silent period, the cinema has created an uncanny zone of tropicality where human and animal merge. rom its beginnings in the early twentieth century the cinema has expressed an F enduring fascination with the tropics as an imaginary space. While many filmmakers have envisaged the tropics as an unspoiled paradise (Bird of Paradise, 1932, 1951; The Moon of Manakoora, 1943; South Pacific, 1958), a view which has its origins in classical times, others have represented the tropics as a deeply uncanny zone where familiar and unfamiliar coalesce. It is as if the heat and intensity of the tropics has liquefied matter until normally incommensurate forms are able to dissolve almost imperceptibly into each other. In this process the boundaries between different systems of thought, ideas and ethics similarly dissipate, creating a space for new and often subversive ideas to flourish. As Driver and Martins state, the meaning of “tropicality” is so elastic a number of discourses have been able to shape it to suit their own purposes. -

1985 - OST the Last Emperor Sunday, 03 August 2008 13:54
1985 - OST The Last Emperor Sunday, 03 August 2008 13:54 The Last Emperor, director Bernardo Bertolucci's epic tale of Pu Yi, the exiled final potentate of China's 3,000-year old Qing dynasty, was the big winner at the 1988 Academy Awards, taking Oscars for (among others) Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Score. The composing trio of Sakamoto/Byrne/Su was an unusual one to be sure, but it's clearly Sakamoto who carries the day here. The avant-garde trained/former Yellow Magic Orchestra pop mastermind crafted a seamless fusion of grand Western themes, Asian shadings, and his own deliciously distinct timbrel sensibilities; an accessible if deceptively modern classicism. Not surprisingly given his Talking Heads roots, Byrne's efforts are more rhythmic and minimal, yet his consuming passion for world music thoroughly evidences itself as well. His lyric and lilting "Main Title Theme" (one of the film's unusual elements was its use of two main themes by separate composers) may offer a pleasant surprise to listeners overly familiar with his pop work. The composer Cong Su is represented by just one cut; but it's a gentle, ethereal spin on Chinese folk influences that fits well with his fellow composers' work. --Jerry McCulley DB: "Bernardo, the director, came and saw Stop Making Sense. He saw it in a theatre in Rome and he was knocked out. He liked the film and the performance, but the audience got involved in the film. They got up and danced, they jumped up on the stage, they sang along and whooped and hollered. -

My name is Anthony Brown, and I am conducting the Smithsonian Institution Oral History with NEA Jazz Master, harmonica virtuoso, guitarist and whistler, Toots Thielemans. Hello… Thielemans: Yes, my real name is Jean. Brown: Jean. Thielemans: And in Belgium… I was born in Belgium. Jean-Baptiste Frédéric Isidor. Four first names. And then Thielemans. Brown: That’s funny. Thielemans: And in French-speaking Belgium, they will pronounce it Thielemans. But I was born April 29, 1922. Brown: That’s Duke Ellington’s birthday, as well. Thielemans: Yes. For additional information contact the Archives Center at 202.633.3270 or [email protected] 1 Brown: All right. Thielemans: Yes, same day. Brown: Yeah, same day. Just a few years later. [laughs] Thielemans: [laughs] Oh, Duke. Okay. Brown: Where in Belgium? What city? Thielemans: In Brussels. Brown: That’s the capitol. Thielemans: In a popular neighborhood of Brussels called Les Marolles. There was… I don’t know, I wouldn’t know which neighborhood to equivalent in New York. Would that be Lower East Side? Or whatever… popular. And my folks, my father and mother, were operating, so to speak, a little beer café—no alcohol but beer, and different beers—in this café on High Street, Rue Haute, on the Marolles.
