ABOUT THE FESTIVAL IF THERE’S EVER A TIME THAT WE NEED LAUGHTER IN OUR LIVES, IT’S NOW! Gilda’s LaughFest is going virtual for 2021, creating unique and exciting programming broadcast directly to West Michigan homes. This 4-day virtual festival includes stand-up comedy, improv, music, dance, speakers, showcases (featuring professionals, amateurs and everything in between) and much more. Gilda’s LaughFest has all kinds of seriously funny stuff, so there is sure to be something for everyone! While we know laughter is good for you, LaughFest is also for a good cause. 100% of the proceeds benefit the free cancer, grief and emotional health support programs offered through Gilda’s Club Grand Rapids for children, adults, families and friends. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Gilda’s Club has shifted our programs into a virtual Clubhouse, ensuring that no one has to face cancer or grief alone – even when not able to physically be together. Gilda’s LaughFest is what our community needs coming out of a dark Michigan winter, more than perhaps ever before. Her call continues to challenge current stand-up comics to acknowledge intersectionality, particularly the perspectives of women of color, and to encourage comics to actively intervene in unsettling the notion that our U.S. culture is “post-gendered” or “post-racial.” This dissertation examines ways in which comics are heeding bell hooks’s call to action, focusing on the work of stand-up artists who forge a bridge between comedy and political activism by performing intersectional perspectives that expand their work beyond the entertainment value of the stage. Though performers of color and white female performers have always been working to subvert the normalcy of white male-dominated, comic space simply by taking the stage, this dissertation focuses on comics who continue to embody and challenge the current wave of intersectional activism by pushing the socially constructed boundaries of race, gender, sexuality, class, and able-bodiedness.

Take a moment to decompress and check out these tips on how to effectively work from home while crushing business. Pick a spot – Make an “office” area with plenty of light and if possible, a door to shut. If you have a desk, use it. Get a schedule, try to stick with It – Use your calendar to plan your day and check tasks off as you complete them. Routine – Try to mimic your normal morning and nighttime routines. Get outside and safely (remember, 6 feet) breathe some fresh air. Take breaks and let your team know – When you feel yourself craving the afternoon break, do it! Let your team know you are stepping away for 20 minutes so they can help field calls, answer questions, etc. Better yet, schedule time in advance to hold yourself accountable.. Use your commute time – Now that you don’t have to drive, bus or walk to work – use that time! Whether it’s cooking breakfast, doing a 20 minute power clean or meditating, it can be a great addition to your day. 1 STAY HEALTHY Keep up with your diet – Try to avoid snacking on treats you have in the house. Eating more sugar has proven to impact your mood and energy level. Stay healthy – Take a walk, do a workout or stretch at least once a day.

Reviewed by Veena Raman Pennsylvania State University, USA In Humour as Politics: The Political Aesthetics of Contemporary Comedy, Nicholas Holm examines how the aesthetic aspects of contemporary comedies can influence the way we engage with and understand our wider sociopolitical context. Without making any causative assumptions about the political effects of popular western comedies, Holm provides an overview of theories of humor and analyzes how different comedic texts use humor to create ever-expanding doubt that makes us question all certainty. The current climate for comedy and humor in the United States is fraught with contradictions. Individuals such as Desiree Fairooz (Code Pink activist prosecuted for laughing during the confirmation hearings of Attorney General Jeff Sessions) face misdemeanor charges for indulging in humor. Comedian Michelle Wolf has been criticized for her humor at the 2018 White House correspondents’ dinner. At the same time, shows such as The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and The Daily Show lampoon the White House, the president, and members of the administration and their ratings soar. In this context, Holm provides deeper insight into the political work of humor in general, observing how the logic of humor might affect our current thinking about liberalism, authority, and dissent. There have been few book-length examinations of the aesthetics of humor, and this book fills that need within the field of humor research.

    Nerd Prom 2018: A Story of Meanness and Hypocrisy White House Correspondents Dinner 2018 (Photo credit: Tasos Katopodis/Getty Images) Like most people with weekend plans and a little bit of sense, I didn’t bother watching last Saturday’s White House Correspondents Dinner. The annual DC press event (mockingly referred to as Nerd Prom) has long struck me as squeamishly phony and awkward. The imagery of supposedly distinguished journalists belly-laughing at sophomoric political jokes, and stumbling over each other to take selfies with celebrity guests, just isn’t appealing to me. Instead, I sat in a crowded movie theater with my family, and enjoyed the hell out of an opening-weekend screening of Avengers: Infinity War. When I got back that night, however, I noticed that social media outlets were abuzz over some derogatory jokes made at the dinner by Michelle Wolf. This of course prompted a natural question: Who’s Michelle Wolf? As it turns out, she’s a comedian. And judging by the video clips I watched from the event, she’s not a particularity good one. Her most tasteless “joke” of the night had to do with abortion, but it was her notably mean-spirited words for White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders (who was in attendance) that have generated the most heat. If you haven’t heard by now, Wolf compared Sanders toAunt Lydia, a loathsome character from the television series,A Handmaid’s Tail. Wolf also called Sanders a liar and took additional shots at her physical appearance: “Every time Sarah steps up to the podium, I get excited because I’m not really sure what we’re going to get: you know, a press briefing, a bunch of lies, or divided into softball teams.
