A chance meeting with DJ/Producer Mark Ronson in 2004 struck up a relationship that led to Doc touring with Ronson’s band as their MC on a string of festival shows from 2006 – 2007. Mawaan Rizwan: Gender Neutral Concubine Pirate
PRESS RELEASE: The Invisible Dot Ltd. presents ID 492: MAWAAN RIZWAN: GENDER NEUTRAL CONCUBINE PIRATE Comedy's most seductive idiot returns to Edinburgh Fringe Festival with a madcap, part stand-up, part clowning confessional show. VENUE: Laughing Horse @ Dropkick Murphys (Venue 289), 7 Merchant St (off Candlemaker Row) !! EH1 2QD "BBC3 favourite Mawaan Rizwan is a mischievous performer, DATE: 5 – 28 August 2016 (not 15) with a no-holds-barred TIME: 5.15pm physicality & high-wattage charm" - The Guardian TICKETS: FREE FRINGE BOX OFFICE / MORE INFO: www.theinvisbledot.com | (NO BOOKING: FREE FRINGE) Slut-dropping, gender-bending comic Mawaan Rizwan enters the stage in a sparkly pirate dress. Occupying a dangerous yet enticing space between established rules and respectability, a space where the laws of two different territories are unclear or inapplicable, Mawaan’s glam-rock pirate alter-ego rejects mainstream identities in this brand-new hour. Combining anecdotes about cycling through the city naked, impersonations of inanimate objects like trampolines, giving birth to a bottle of wine, a musical interlude about baby wipes, Gender Neutral Concubine Pirate galvanizes Mawaan’s reputation as an absurdist, cheeky, eccentric geezer with a subversive performance style. Following his BBC documentary How Gay is Pakistan? in which he investigated life for gay and transgender people in his family’s country, Mawaan is making a name for himself as a prominent British-Asian LGBT activist. His most recent credits include television drama Murdered By My Father (BBC 3) and Vera (ITV). Mawaan shot to fame with his online sketches (youtube.com/Mawaan), which attracted 20 million hits and 100k subscribers. -
ANDERTON Music Festival Capitalism
1 Music Festival Capitalism Chris Anderton Abstract: This chapter adds to a growing subfield of music festival studies by examining the business practices and cultures of the commercial outdoor sector, with a particular focus on rock, pop and dance music events. The events of this sector require substantial financial and other capital in order to be staged and achieve success, yet the market is highly volatile, with relatively few festivals managing to attain longevity. It is argued that these events must balance their commercial needs with the socio-cultural expectations of their audiences for hedonistic, carnivalesque experiences that draw on countercultural understanding of festival culture (the countercultural carnivalesque). This balancing act has come into increased focus as corporate promoters, brand sponsors and venture capitalists have sought to dominate the market in the neoliberal era of late capitalism. The chapter examines the riskiness and volatility of the sector before examining contemporary economic strategies for risk management and audience development, and critiques of these corporatizing and mainstreaming processes. Keywords: music festival; carnivalesque; counterculture; risk management; cool capitalism A popular music festival may be defined as a live event consisting of multiple musical performances, held over one or more days (Shuker, 2017, 131), though the connotations of 2 the word “festival” extend much further than this, as I will discuss below. For the purposes of this chapter, “popular music” is conceived as music that is produced by contemporary artists, has commercial appeal, and does not rely on public subsidies to exist, hence typically ranges from rock and pop through to rap and electronic dance music, but excludes most classical music and opera (Connolly and Krueger 2006, 667). -

TV Programmes
TV programmes 1. Panorama: The Secret Letters of Pope John Paul II TX: 15/02/2016 Dur: 29'00" Broadcaster: BBC 1 Production Company: Blakeway This film – for the BBC, Arte and PBS - made headlines in newspapers around the world. It was the result of a 4-year investigation by journalist Edward Stourton. He discovered hundreds of letters and photographs that revealed an intense emotional relationship between Pope John Paul 11 and a married woman, Polish born American philosopher, Anna Teresa Tymieniecka, which spanned 30 years (from his time as a Cardinal until his death as Pope). The letters had been acquired for a six figure sum by the Polish National Library, and were then hidden away while the process of securing sainthood for John Paul was in progress. The revelations turned what might have been a history programme into a current affairs investigation. It would seem there was a cover-up. Following a tip-off that the letters existed, it took two years to track them down and another year to gain access to them. It was clear Anna Teresa had fallen in love with John Paul and had declared that love. There is no evidence that the relationship was physical, but the prudent course would have been to end it. John Paul was determined it should continue, and even tried to justify it in religious terms. The letters had been sold to the Polish Library by Anna Teresa after the death of her husband, and Stourton assumed that the archive consisted simply of John Paul’s letters to her. -
