Univerzita Karlova, Fakulta sociálních věd, Institut komunikačních studií a žurnalistiky, Katedra mediálních studií. Vedoucí diplomové práce PhDr. Milan Kruml. Abstract The work "Rise of television political satire in the USA, Czech Republic and Germany in the new millennium" maps the development of television political satire in the United States, Germany and the Czech Republic in the period from 2000 to the present days with a look at the history of this genre in each respected country. Special attention is focused on the programs that had the greatest influence on the current form of this genre and influenced it the most. The first part of the work presents the history of television political satire in each individual country and introduces their current representatives of this genre, which have the greatest influence in the modern day. This section also introduces the obstacles of their cultural environment in which the shows were created to provide a more holistic view on obstacles that these shows have had to overcome in today's media world. In the second part, selected shows will be analysed from a technical and formal point of view and attention will also be focused on their hosts. The role of host in these shows is one of the most important elements which determine their future success. Furthermore, the work will examine other elements that individual programs share with each other and, conversely, the elements in which individual programs of political satire are distinguished. Administration of Barack Obama, 2013 Remarks at the Jerusalem International Convention Center in Jerusalem, Israel March 21, 2013 Shalom. Thank you so much. Well, it is a great honor to be with you here in Jerusalem, and I'm so grateful for the welcome that I've received from the people of Israel. Thank you. I bring with me the support of the American people and the friendship that binds us together. Over the last 2 days, I've reaffirmed the bonds between our countries with Prime Minister Netanyahu and President Peres. I've borne witness to the ancient history of the Jewish people at the Shrine of the Book, and I've seen Israel's shining future in your scientists and your entrepreneurs. This is a nation of museums and patents, timeless holy sites, groundbreaking innovation. Only in Israel could you see the Dead Sea Scrolls and the place where the technology onboard the Mars Rover originated at the same time. But what I've most looked forward to is the ability to speak directly to you, the Israeli people—especially so many young people who are here today—to talk about the history that brought us here today and the future that you will make in the years to come. Now, I know that in Israel's vibrant democracy, every word and every gesture is carefully scrutinized. [Laughter] But I want to clear something up just so you know: Any drama between me and my friend Bibi over the years was just a plot to create material for "Eretz Nehederet." That's the only thing that was going on.

Blackburn certifies that this is the approved version of the following dissertation: The Performance of Intersectionality on the 21st Century Stand-Up Comedy Stage Chair: Dr. Nicole Hodges Persley Date Approved: Aug. 23, 2018 iii Abstract In 2014, Black feminist scholar bell hooks called for humor to be utilized as political weaponry in the current, post-1990s wave of intersectional activism at the National Women’s Studies Association conference in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Her call continues to challenge current stand-up comics to acknowledge intersectionality, particularly the perspectives of women of color, and to encourage comics to actively intervene in unsettling the notion that our U.S. culture is “post-gendered” or “post-racial.” This dissertation examines ways in which comics are heeding bell hooks’s call to action, focusing on the work of stand-up artists who forge a bridge between comedy and political activism by performing intersectional perspectives that expand their work beyond the entertainment value of the stage. Though performers of color and white female performers have always been working to subvert the normalcy of white male-dominated, comic space simply by taking the stage, this dissertation focuses on comics who continue to embody and challenge the current wave of intersectional activism by pushing the socially constructed boundaries of race, gender, sexuality, class, and able-bodiedness.

  • Lasalle Work from Home Guide
A GUIDE TO WORKING FROM HOME WORK TIPS AND TRICKS Hey, this is new to most of us. Take a moment to decompress and check out these tips on how to effectively work from home while crushing business. Pick a spot – Make an “office” area with plenty of light and if possible, a door to shut. If you have a desk, use it. Get a schedule, try to stick with It – Use your calendar to plan your day and check tasks off as you complete them. Routine – Try to mimic your normal morning and nighttime routines. Do you usually wake up and work out? Don’t stop now! Use online resources to get your sweat on. Does a walk at noon break up your day? Get outside and safely (remember, 6 feet) breathe some fresh air. Take breaks and let your team know – When you feel yourself craving the afternoon break, do it! Let your team know you are stepping away for 20 minutes so they can help field calls, answer questions, etc. Better yet, schedule time in advance to hold yourself accountable.. Use your commute time – Now that you don’t have to drive, bus or walk to work – use that time! Whether it’s cooking breakfast, doing a 20 minute power clean or meditating, it can be a great addition to your day. 1 STAY HEALTHY Keep up with your diet – Try to avoid snacking on treats you have in the house. Eating more sugar has proven to impact your mood and energy level. Stay healthy – Take a walk, do a workout or stretch at least once a day.

(Please do not use my voice mail. Email is the best way to reach me. [email protected]) Course Description: This course examines the politics of Israel/Palestine. It would be customary in IR and political science when studying one country or region to consider it a “case” of something. But as we will see, the politics around Israel-Palestine is in large part animated by the contestation over such classification. Is it a case of protracted conflict? A case of colonial oppression? A case of human rights violations? A case of competing nationalisms? The course will examine these competing (though not necessarily mutually-exclusive) frameworks. The course proceeds both chronologically and conceptually/thematically. Those without a basic knowledge of the case might wish to purchase a textbook to read early on. (Suggestions: those by Dowty, Smith, and Caplan.) In addition, to further explore op-ed writing (and social media engagement, especially around sensitive topics), you may want to consult my book on the topic (optional), which should be out in mid-to-late January. International Journal of Communication 12(2018), Book Review 2748–2750 1932–8036/2018BKR0009 Nicholas Holm, Humour as Politics: The Political Aesthetics of Contemporary Comedy, Switzerland: Palgrave Macmillan, Springer, 2017, 223 pp., $80.00 (hardcover). Reviewed by Veena Raman Pennsylvania State University, USA In Humour as Politics: The Political Aesthetics of Contemporary Comedy, Nicholas Holm examines how the aesthetic aspects of contemporary comedies can influence the way we engage with and understand our wider sociopolitical context. Without making any causative assumptions about the political effects of popular western comedies, Holm provides an overview of theories of humor and analyzes how different comedic texts use humor to create ever-expanding doubt that makes us question all certainty. The current climate for comedy and humor in the United States is fraught with contradictions. Individuals such as Desiree Fairooz (Code Pink activist prosecuted for laughing during the confirmation hearings of Attorney General Jeff Sessions) face misdemeanor charges for indulging in humor. Comedian Michelle Wolf has been criticized for her humor at the 2018 White House correspondents’ dinner. At the same time, shows such as The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and The Daily Show lampoon the White House, the president, and members of the administration and their ratings soar. In this context, Holm provides deeper insight into the political work of humor in general, observing how the logic of humor might affect our current thinking about liberalism, authority, and dissent. There have been few book-length examinations of the aesthetics of humor, and this book fills that need within the field of humor research.

  • “Yad Vashem, You So Fine!” the Place of the Shoah in Contemporary Israeli and American Comedy
“Yad Vashem, You So Fine!” The Place of the Shoah in Contemporary Israeli and American Comedy Avinoam Patt In the aftermath of the Holocaust, survivors in postwar Europe de- ployed humor as a way to process the recent traumas of the war, to cope with the enormity of the destruction, and to endure the seemingly absurd nature of continued Jewish life after the Holocaust. Humor helped survivors to maintain a sense of psychological advantage and served as an outlet for subversive and cynical observations on the postwar world.1 After the war, humor directed at non-Jewish audiences often focused on using humor as a weapon, to minimize and belittle Nazis (most famously in the work of Mel Brooks). In recent decades, however, as the place of the Holocaust has grown in contemporary Jewish culture and identity, references to the Ho- locaust in Jewish humor have grown more frequent, although the function and deployment of such Holocaust humor is substantively different in form and agenda. Rather than deploying humor as a psychological coping mech- anism or weapon against Nazis, Holocaust humor has taken on a decidedly more political tone, often used as a means to critique the place of the Holo- caust in contemporary Jewish society, politics, and culture. In this chapter I compare the deployment of Holocaust humor in recent Israeli and American Jewish sketch comedy to assess what humor can teach us about the place of the Holocaust in contemporary Jewish life.2 I focus on several examples from Israel and the United States, including Eretz Nehederet (Wonderful Country), HaHamishia HaKamerit (The Camera Quintet), and HaYehudim Ba’im (The Jews Are Coming) in Israel and the work of Larry David, Sarah Silverman, Amy Schumer, and Nathan Fielder in America.
