  • Strike Them Hard! the Baker Massacre Play by Ramona Big Head
“STRIKE THEM HARD!” THE BAKER MASSACRE PLAY RAMONA BIG HEAD B.Ed., University of Lethbridge, 1996 A Project Submitted to the School of Graduate Studies of the University of Lethbridge in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree MASTER OF EDUCATION FACULTY OF EDUCATION LETHBRIDGE, ALBERTA March 2009 In memory of Apaisapiaakii (Galina) iii Abstract The oral tradition of story-telling among the Blackfoot is still strong. However, in order to keep the tradition alive for future generations, educators are beginning to step outside the box to allow for innovative ways to bring the stories back to life for students. By writing a play about the 1870 Baker Massacre, and staging it with Blackfoot students from the Kainai Board of Education school system, I have successfully found another way to engage First Nation students from Kindergarten through grade 12. This is the first time the story of the Baker Massacre has been told from the perspective of Blackfoot children. A good portion of the research was taken from oral accounts of actual descendents of the survivors of the massacre. Most of the survivors were young children, including my great-great grandmother, Holy Bear Woman. The Baker Massacre became a forgotten and lost story. However, by performing this play to an audience of approximately 1000 over the course of six performances, including a debut performance in New York City, there is a good chance that this story will not fall into obscurity again. The process of researching, writing and staging this play also had a major impact on my own personal healing and well-being.

And for Laura Ingram Ellis: as much as I wanted this dissertation to spring forth from my head fully formed, like Athena from Zeus’s forehead, it did not happen that way. It happened one sentence at a time, some more excruciatingly wrought than others, and you were there for every single sentence. So these sentences I have written especially for you, Laura, with my deepest and most profound gratitude. ii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Although it sometimes felt like a solitary process, I wrote this dissertation with the help and support of several different people, all of whom I deeply appreciate. First and foremost on this list is Prof. Charles Hiroshi Garrett, whom I learned so much from and whose patience and wisdom helped shape this project. I am very grateful to committee members Prof. James Borders, Prof. Walter Everett, Prof.

Blackburn certifies that this is the approved version of the following dissertation: The Performance of Intersectionality on the 21st Century Stand-Up Comedy Stage Chair: Dr. Nicole Hodges Persley Date Approved: Aug. 23, 2018 iii Abstract In 2014, Black feminist scholar bell hooks called for humor to be utilized as political weaponry in the current, post-1990s wave of intersectional activism at the National Women’s Studies Association conference in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Her call continues to challenge current stand-up comics to acknowledge intersectionality, particularly the perspectives of women of color, and to encourage comics to actively intervene in unsettling the notion that our U.S. culture is “post-gendered” or “post-racial.” This dissertation examines ways in which comics are heeding bell hooks’s call to action, focusing on the work of stand-up artists who forge a bridge between comedy and political activism by performing intersectional perspectives that expand their work beyond the entertainment value of the stage. Though performers of color and white female performers have always been working to subvert the normalcy of white male-dominated, comic space simply by taking the stage, this dissertation focuses on comics who continue to embody and challenge the current wave of intersectional activism by pushing the socially constructed boundaries of race, gender, sexuality, class, and able-bodiedness.

  • Lasalle Work from Home Guide
A GUIDE TO WORKING FROM HOME WORK TIPS AND TRICKS Hey, this is new to most of us. Take a moment to decompress and check out these tips on how to effectively work from home while crushing business. Pick a spot – Make an “office” area with plenty of light and if possible, a door to shut. If you have a desk, use it. Get a schedule, try to stick with It – Use your calendar to plan your day and check tasks off as you complete them. Routine – Try to mimic your normal morning and nighttime routines. Do you usually wake up and work out? Don’t stop now! Use online resources to get your sweat on. Does a walk at noon break up your day? Get outside and safely (remember, 6 feet) breathe some fresh air. Take breaks and let your team know – When you feel yourself craving the afternoon break, do it! Let your team know you are stepping away for 20 minutes so they can help field calls, answer questions, etc. Better yet, schedule time in advance to hold yourself accountable.. Use your commute time – Now that you don’t have to drive, bus or walk to work – use that time! Whether it’s cooking breakfast, doing a 20 minute power clean or meditating, it can be a great addition to your day. 1 STAY HEALTHY Keep up with your diet – Try to avoid snacking on treats you have in the house. Eating more sugar has proven to impact your mood and energy level. Stay healthy – Take a walk, do a workout or stretch at least once a day.

International Journal of Communication 12(2018), Book Review 2748–2750 1932–8036/2018BKR0009 Nicholas Holm, Humour as Politics: The Political Aesthetics of Contemporary Comedy, Switzerland: Palgrave Macmillan, Springer, 2017, 223 pp., $80.00 (hardcover). Reviewed by Veena Raman Pennsylvania State University, USA In Humour as Politics: The Political Aesthetics of Contemporary Comedy, Nicholas Holm examines how the aesthetic aspects of contemporary comedies can influence the way we engage with and understand our wider sociopolitical context. Without making any causative assumptions about the political effects of popular western comedies, Holm provides an overview of theories of humor and analyzes how different comedic texts use humor to create ever-expanding doubt that makes us question all certainty. The current climate for comedy and humor in the United States is fraught with contradictions. Individuals such as Desiree Fairooz (Code Pink activist prosecuted for laughing during the confirmation hearings of Attorney General Jeff Sessions) face misdemeanor charges for indulging in humor. Comedian Michelle Wolf has been criticized for her humor at the 2018 White House correspondents’ dinner. At the same time, shows such as The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and The Daily Show lampoon the White House, the president, and members of the administration and their ratings soar. In this context, Holm provides deeper insight into the political work of humor in general, observing how the logic of humor might affect our current thinking about liberalism, authority, and dissent. There have been few book-length examinations of the aesthetics of humor, and this book fills that need within the field of humor research.

The Dynamic was sustained on April 11th, headed by those brilliant social media satirists Jasmine Pender and Jonas Golland. This was a grand foray into the multi-medic area. The set opened in darkness, with a comment about having had an awful night. It then proceeded into the ‘daylight’ media nightmare. There was the great feeling of a computer crash or jam, with the various channels crossing, interrupting each other – Notifications, Friend Requests – in which there is thinly veiled surveillance in the form of ‘citizenship ranking’ enquiries. In this sketch, the Social Media channels are animated and personified, starkly similar to a pair of petulant, squabbling adolescents always desperate to interrupt each other. Many sites are offensively intrusive, asking for users’ intimate personal details for registration purposes. Social media are also saturated with generally spurious medications and cosmetics. The absurdity of one of the latter is highlit by the inversion phrase ‘mountains into molehills’ and the ‘brand name’ Instaplump. After the first interval bell, Jonas assumes the role of investigator/spy. The couple then seem to assume the roles of adjudicators, monitoring each other’s performances, and effects on the audiences.
