7 to heighten fears of a German attack in the area. It was therefore a complete surprise when a bombardment commenced at 6AM 30th November at the base of the salient in the south. The counterattack was set for the 30th of November and was intended to strike both flanks of the British salient cutting off the bulk of the divisions in the nose of the salient. The most common perception of Cambrai has been as a fleeting success with no clear understanding of why it failed.
