In the recent city centre regeneration, starting in the 1990s, great efforts have been made to ensure that the reconnection with the rivers continues to be fostered and their role in the history of the city celebrated. Waterscapes and squares have been embedded into the city for its vibrancy with the respect of the history of Sheffield. This paper examines the soundscape with waterscape along the Gold Route formed in the city centre regeneration project. The changes of waterscape sound levels with frequency and time at different locations of the Gold Route are analysed. Comparisons have also been made between different water features along the Gold Route in terms of psychoacoustic parameters including loudness, roughness, sharpness, and fluctuation strength. A series of field questionnaire surveys in selected locations along the Gold Route have shown that water sounds are the most preferred sounds in the soundscape. 1 Introduction The city’s first settlement developed at the confluence of the Rivers Don and Sheaf, around the 12th century. With the role as a market town at this time, Sheffield had continued to be shaped by waterways. Sheffield’s access to abundant natural resources made it an ideal centre for iron and steel industry, and the rivers contributed considerably to the production and industry of the city development. -

Combined Authorities and Metro Mayors What is a combined authority (CA)? A combined authority (CA) is a legal body set up using national legislation that enables a group of two or more councils to collaborate and take collective decisions across council boundaries. It is far more robust than an informal partnership or even a joint committee. The creation of a CA means that member councils can be more ambitious in their joint working and can take advantage of powers and resources devolved to them from national government. While established by Parliament, CAs are locally owned and have to be initiated and supported by the councils involved. 54 (17%) Number of local authorities (excluding the 33 London boroughs) with full membership of a combined authority 22% Percentage of population of England outside London living in a mayoral combined authority area Brief background to devolution and the combined authorities The idea of devolution has excited the imaginations of the political class for a long time even if the public has been less enthusiastic. The turnout rates for the May 2017 Metro Mayor 1 elections attest to this. Devolution was given a big push under New Labour but John Prescott’s North East Devolution Referendum 2004 was decisively rejected by the people (78% of voters were against). The idea was nevertheless pursued by the Coalition. Heseltine’s No Stone Unturned: In pursuit of growth 2012 report made a reasonable case for the concentration of funding streams and for these to be placed under local political control for greater efficiency and flexibility and to maximise effect. -

The woods are just bursting with life and it is great to hear in the church service chat rooms people swapping details of where to walk to find the best bluebells! There is a tram stop at the back of the railway station, accessed via the main overbridge. Trams from the station to the University run on the blue route (towards Malin Bridge). Trams from the city centre to the University run on both the yellow route (towards Middlewood) and the blue route. For central campus (including the Students’ Union) get off the tram at the University stop. Nebula 4.3 , September 2007 Sheffield is not Sexy. By Stephen Mallinder Abstract The city of Sheffield’s attempts, during the early 1980s, at promoting economic regeneration through popular cultural production were unconsciously suggestive of later creative industries strategies. Post-work economic policies, which became significant to the Blair government a decade later, were evident in urban centres such as Manchester, Liverpool and Sheffield in nascent form. The specificity of Sheffield’s socio-economic configuration gave context, not merely to its industrial narrative but also to the city’s auditory culture, which was to frame well intended though subsequently flawed strategies for regeneration. Unlike other cities, most notably Manchester, the city’s mono-cultural characteristics failed to provide an effective entrepreneurial infrastructure on which to build immediate economic response to economic rationalisation and regional decline. Top-down municipal policies, which embraced the city’s popular music, gave centrality to cultural production in response to a deflated regional economy unable, at the time, to sustain rejuvenation through cultural consumption. Such embryonic strategies would subsequently become formalised though creative industry policies developing relationships with local economies as opposed to urban engineering through regional government. Building upon the readings of industrial cities such as Liverpool, New Orleans and Chicago, the post-work leisure economy has increasingly addressed the significance of the auditory effect in cities such as Manchester and Sheffield. However the failure of the talismanic National Centre for Popular Music signifies the inherent problems of institutionalizing popular cultural forms and resistance of sound to be anchored and contained. The city’s sonic narrative became contained in its distinctive patterns of cultural production and consumption that ultimately resisted attempts at compartmentalization and representation through what became colloquially known as ‘the museum of popular music’. -

Appendix C: 2011 Census Report 2: Population Estimates for Wards Introduction The 2011 Census was carried out by Office for National Statistics on 23 March 2011. All of the results relate to that date. As such, they do not compare with the mid‐year estimates for 2011 or for any of the previous years. One of the things that the Census has highlighted is the difference between the population on Census data and at the June mid‐year in a university city like Sheffield. Students are counted at their term time address, but by June many final year students have left the city whilst the first year students have not yet moved in. 2011 Census Report 1 summarised the first output from the 2011 Census, which set out the population estimates for local authorities. This report now looks at the population estimates for Sheffield wards, which were released by the Office for National Statistics on 23rd November 2012. Only the population age and sex breakdowns and household counts are published at present. Ethnicity and other data will be published in subsequent releases. (See 6 below on future releases) The report identifies: the changes in ward populations since 2001 the significant differences between the wards and the city averages the population in households and in communal establishments Ward Population Estimates Ward Size Around the time of the 2001 Census, the Boundary Commission were conducting a review of Sheffield’s wards. The review reported just too late for these to become the Census wards, but it did mean that there was not a large variation in population size between the 28 wards. -
