One of the 1970s’ most successful hard rock bands in spite of critical pans and somewhat reluctant radio airplay (at first), Grand Funk Railroad built a devoted fan base with constant touring, a loud, simple take on the blues-rock power trio sound, and strong working-class appeal. The band was formed by Flint, MI, guitarist/songwriter Mark Farner and drummer Don Brewer, both former members of a local band called Terry Knight & the Pack. They recruited former ? & the Mysterians bassist Mel Schacher in 1968, and Knight retired from performing to become their manager, naming the group after Michigan’s well-known Grand Trunk Railroad. They performed for free at the 1969 Atlanta Pop Festival, and their energetic, if not technically proficient, show led Capitol Records to sign them at once. While radio shied away from Grand Funk Railroad, the group’s strong work ethic and commitment to touring produced a series of big- selling albums over the next few years; five of their eight releases from 1969 to 1972 went platinum, and the others all went gold. Meanwhile, Knight promoted the band aggressively, going so far as to rent a Times Square billboard to advertise Closer to Home, which turned out to be the band’s first multi-platinum album in spite of a backlash from the rock press. However, Grand Funk Railroad fired Knight in March of 1972, who promptly sued; the band spent most of the year in a court battle that ended when they bought Knight out. ― Allmusic. Long acclaimed as one of the most innovative and spellbinding bands on the contemporary British pop scene, the Verve finally broke through to a mass international audience in 1997 with the instant classic “Bittersweet Symphony.” By no stretch a study in overnight success, the group’s rise was instead the culmination of a long, arduous journey that began at the dawn of the decade and went on to encompass a major breakup, multiple lawsuits, and an extensive diet of narcotics. Perfecting an oceanic sound that fused the exploratory vision of ’60s-era psychedelia with the shimmering atmospherics of the shoegazer aesthetic, the Verve languished in relative obscurity while waiting for the rest of the music world to play catch-up, creating one of the most complex and rewarding bodies of work in modern rock & roll long before most listeners even learned of the group’s existence — only to again fall apart at the peak of their success. ― Allmusic. 1. Yo-Yo Ma is a formidable cellist and non-stop touring artist. He claims to have been away from home for 20 out of the past 30 years and has released almost 60 CDs. Born in 1955 to Chinese parents living inParis, Yo-Yo had a very musical upbringing. His mother was a singer, while his father was a conductor and composer. He began to study the violin, then the viola, before taking up the cello. When he was seven years old he and his family moved toNew Yorkand soon afterwards he appeared on American television in a concert conducted by Leonard Berstein. He studied cello at the Juilliard School of Music inNew Yorkbefore following a postgraduate arts education atHarvardUniversity. He has performed with most of the world's major orchestras and won numerous awards including a mantelpiece-full of Grammys. His recordings and performances of Johann Sebastian Bach's suites for unaccompanied cello are particularly acclaimed, and he has also played a good deal of chamber music. Yo-Yo Ma is the founder of the Silk Road Project, a musical and educational initiative promoting the study of the cultural, artistic and intellectual traditions along the ancient Silk Roadroute. Did you know? Yo-Yo Ma has a reputation for having one of the most eclectic repertoires in classical music. He has performed and recorded Baroque pieces on period instruments, American bluegrass music, traditional Chinese melodies, Argentinian tangos, Brazilian music as well as soundtracks to the films 'Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon' and 'Memoirs of a Geisha'. Hope Amid Tears - Beethoven Cello Sonatas. Purchase and download this album in a wide variety of formats depending on your needs. Buy the album Starting at £14.99. Fourty years on from his first release of this complete collection, cellist Yo-Yo Ma has become a venerable, white-haired gent, as has the pianist Emanuel Ax. "Hope Amid Tears" is the title of their new album, which they recorded at Seiji Ozawa Hall in Lenox, Massachusetts. And hope certainly was in high demand in August 2020 when the Covid-19 pandemic was ravaging the world, and the USA in particular. And what could be more hopeful than Beethoven's humanist message? The Five Sonatas for Cello and Piano (for piano with cello accompaniment for the first two, in fact) are drawn from three different periods of Beethoven's artistic evolution. The first two are still rooted in the eighteenth century, and represent the first important works of the classical period. The Sonata No. 3 in A major, Op. 69 , then sees the cello's horizon broaden. The instrument sets itself free, and really speaks in the first person.

For Lynne Littman and Brandon Millan We still have dreams, but we know now that most of them will come to nothing. And we also most fortunately know that it really doesn’t matter. —Raymond Chandler, letter to Charles Morton, October 9, 1950 Introduction: First Goodbyes Jack Nicholson, a boy, could never forget sitting at the bar with John J. Nicholson, Jack’s namesake and maybe even his father, a soft little dapper Irishman in glasses. He kept neatly combed what was left of his red hair and had long ago separated from Jack’s mother, their high school romance gone the way of any available drink. They told Jack that John had once been a great ballplayer and that he decorated store windows, all five Steinbachs in Asbury Park, though the only place Jack ever saw this man was in the bar, day-drinking apricot brandy and Hennessy, shot after shot, quietly waiting for the mercy to kick in.

Rock Album Discography Last up-date: September 27th, 2021 Rock Album Discography “Music was my first love, and it will be my last” was the first line of the virteous song “Music” on the album “Rebel”, which was produced by Alan Parson, sung by John Miles, and released I n 1976. From my point of view, there is no other citation, which more properly expresses the emotional impact of music to human beings. People come and go, but music remains forever, since acoustic waves are not bound to matter like monuments, paintings, or sculptures. In contrast, music as sound in general is transmitted by matter vibrations and can be reproduced independent of space and time. In this way, music is able to connect humans from the earliest high cultures to people of our present societies all over the world. Music is indeed a universal language and likely not restricted to our planetary society. The importance of music to the human society is also underlined by the Voyager mission: Both Voyager spacecrafts, which were launched at August 20th and September 05th, 1977, are bound for the stars, now, after their visits to the outer planets of our solar system (mission status: https://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status/). They carry a gold- plated copper phonograph record, which comprises 90 minutes of music selected from all cultures next to sounds, spoken messages, and images from our planet Earth. There is rather little hope that any extraterrestrial form of life will ever come along the Voyager spacecrafts. But if this is yet going to happen they are likely able to understand the sound of music from these records at least.

Andrus Dissertation Committee: William Chapman, Chairperson David E. Stannard Mark Helbling Robert McGlone Njoroge Njoroge Keywords: Hawaiian Archaeology, Historic Preservation, Kalaupapa, Hansen’s disease i © Copyright 2014 Milo M. Andrus All Rights Reserved ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS “Everything is owed to those who have gone before,” a Hansen’s disease patient said at a community meeting in Kalaupapa.1 The patient referred to the largesse of state government awards or payments in comparison to the hardships the first patients experienced upon their arrival at Kalawao in January of 1866. In my case those who have gone before, those who have helped in creating this dissertation, have evolved into a long list of benevolent citizens that live and work on the peninsula: Edwin, Bernard, Paul and Winnie, Boogie and Ivy, Albert and Lucy, Walter and Keahu and their son Bruddha, Eric and Claire, Lionel, Guy, Kalawai`a. Others include; Gena Sasada, Gertrude, Elizabeth, Peter, Makia, and other patients and both state and federal workers who endeavored to make my work not only pleasant, but also incredibly rewarding to associate with and observe their daily routines. Two retired professors from the University of Hawai`i at West O`ahu, Dan Boylan, Ph.D., a historian, and Henry Chapin, Ph.D., a literary scholar contributed greatly to my understanding of the Hawaiian Islands and the “fine art” of interpretation.
