China as dystopia: Cultural imaginings through translation Published in: Translation Studies (Taylor and Francis) doi: 10.1080/14781700.2015.1009937 Tong King Lee* School of Chinese, The University of Hong Kong *Email: [email protected] This article explores how China is represented in English translations of contemporary Chinese literature. It seeks to uncover the discourses at work in framing this literature for reception by an Anglophone readership, and to suggest how these discourses dovetail with meta-narratives on China circulating in the West. In addition to asking “what gets translated”, the article is interested in how Chinese authors and their works are positioned, marketed, and commodified in the West through the discursive material that surrounds a translated book. Drawing on English translations of works by Yan Lianke, Ma Jian, Chan Koonchung, Yu Hua, Su Tong, and Mo Yan, the article argues that literary translation is part of a wider programme of Anglophone textual practices that renders China an overdetermined sign pointing to a repressive, dystopic Other. The knowledge structures governing these textual practices circumscribe the ways in which China is imagined and articulated, thereby producing a discursive China. The reason I say I feel a need to “confess” as opposed to just being able to state this is because recent postingson The China Beat, as well as some of the reviews referenced in those postings, attack the book with a sharpness and thoroughgoingness that initially made me question my own taste and to think that I was politically incorrect for liking and being impressed by the novel as I read it. But after finishing Howard Goldblatt’s translation of Wolf Totem—a book that we now know is the work of Lu Jiamin, using “Jiang Rong” as a pseudonym—my conviction remains unchanged that this is indeed a major work. -

China Past and Present introduces the epic sweep of China’s modern transformations. Grasping these changes provides a key to the uneasy relationship between past and present in contemporary China. Since the end of the nineteenth century, Chinese rulers, intellectuals, reformers, and revolutionaries have attempted to modify, reject, even to eradicate elements of the Chinese past in order to construct a new and modern present. At the same time, they have sought to create a sense of specifically Chinese identity, and to redefine modernity in Chinese terms. The changing understandings of China’s pasts and the meanings of Chinese ethnic and national identity in the present are the themes of this course. HIST 191 is designed to acquaint you with the historical context for understanding contemporary China. It follows HIST 190, but there are no prerequisites. Section Discussions: Section assignments give you an opportunity to focus on primary texts. Primary texts are the first-hand sources through which historians understand the past. Among these readings you will find political documents, news articles, and fiction from the past, as well as personal memoirs. Read these sources carefully and critically, always taking into account the context in which they were written. Discussion focuses on learning to interpret these primary texts. -

INVENTING A WOLFISH CHINA - ON JIANG RONG’S WOLF TOTEM A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts by Dongming Shen August 2012 © 2012 Dongming Shen ABSTRACT The Wolf Totem by Jiang Rong has won great success both in and out of China. Jiang Rong criticizes Han Chinese and embraces the culture of the northern ethnic minority group, the Mongols, because of its stronger sense of competition and domination. In the epilogue of this novel, Jiang argues that the wolf totem was the most ancient totem for all Chinese people and retells Chinese history using this framework. This paper explores the background of the novel and its author, as well as supporting materials the author uses in his proposal concerning the wolf totem, and suggests that the wolf totem is a purely ideological invention of Jiang Rong. This invention reflects Jiang’s own philosophy and caters to the cultural needs of modern Chinese people. In inventing the wolf totem, the author uses historical documents, archeological findings, as well as a far-fetched bodily metaphor. However, none of this evidence is validated by scholarly research. BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Dongming Shen is currently a graduate student in the Department of Asian Studies at Cornell University. Her field is East Asian Studies. Her research interests include Chinese mythology and Christianity in late imperial China. She received her undergraduate degree in English Literature and Social Science Studies at Nanjing University and her Master of Public Administration at Cornell University. -

ANNUAL REPORT 2017–18 From the Director he Lieberthal Rogel Center for Chinese Studies at the University of Michigan was established in 1961 when diplomatic relations Tbetween the PRC and the United States did not exist. With private foundation grants from the Mellon and Ford Foundations and support from the US Department of Education, the Center was part of a pioneering effort at Michigan to develop interdisciplinary centers focused on area expertise. From that time, scholars from different disciplinary backgrounds have congregated at the Center to learn from each other, to collaborate on research, and to teach students who share the same desire to acquire deep knowledge about China. More than half a century has passed, but the need for expertise and education on China is no less crucial now than it was then. The early initiatives to support Chinese Studies were motivated by Cold War concerns—conflict in Southeast Asia, the Taiwan Straits, balancing against the Soviet Union. In today’s world, China is no longer closed; its influence and global presence have expanded immensely. The US and China have learned to cooperate on many issues of global concern. However, in recent years, the competitive and conflictual side of the relationship has grown more prominent. We hear and read constantly of the trade war, the potential for a “new cold war”, and the looming University of Michigan Lieberthal-Rogel University “Thucydides Trap” when a hegemonic power is challenged by a rising upstart. In other words, what happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object. In an age that is no less anxious than the Cold War, our role in the University continues to be one that complements Michigan’s strong foundations in its schools and colleges and its impressive breadth of teaching and research. -

It introduces service members to the basic phrases and vocabulary needed for everyday military tasks such as meet & greet (establishing rapport), commands, and questioning. Content is tailored to support deploying units of military police, civil affairs, and engineers. In 6–8 hours of self-paced training, Rapport familiarizes learners with conversational phrases and cultural traditions, as well as the geography and ethnic groups of the region. Learners hear the target language as it is spoken by a native speaker through 75–85 commonly encountered exchanges. Following the political chronology of ruling houses and parties, we will explore the intellectual, political and economic responses that the Chinese experienced during this time. You will have an opportunity to explore these in depth through both readings of original documents (in translation) and secondary sources on the period. The method of teaching in this course will be a combination of lecture and discussion. It is expected that you will have read and thought about the assigned readings.
