O’Rilla: Apes, Irishmen and the Great Gorilla Controversy of 1861 John Miller Contributors............................................................................................. 416 PART I: HISTORY INTRODUCTION TO PART I: HISTORY PADDY LYONS, JOHN MILLER AND WILLY MALEY The long nineteenth century is arguably the most significant period in Irish history, a sustained epoch of trauma and transformation fringed by union and independence and marked by a series of events that changed the political landscape of the nation forever, giving rise to art and ideas of international importance, and laying the foundations for independence. At one end of this tumultuous period we have Grattan’s Parliament, the United Irishmen, the Rebellion of 1798 led by Wolfe Tone, and the Union of 1801, and at the other the fall of Parnell, the Easter Rising, Civil War and partition. Between times there are the great hinge events of Catholic Emancipation, the Famine, and the Land War. From Wolfe Tone to Maud Gonne, Ireland went through a period of enormous upheaval that carved out the culture and politics of the modern nation. Irish Studies as a field of inquiry has not yet fully engaged with the range and richness of material in this period. Nor have critics in the various Anglophone literary fields of the period yet grasped the full extent to which Irish and Scottish events and authors contributed decisively to the development of their own areas, and that despite the best efforts of scholars such as Seamus Deane, Marianne Elliott, Luke Gibbons, Nigel Leask, Murray Pittock, and Katie Trumpener. Romanticism and Victorianism are only ever partially understood independent of events and artistic developments in Ireland and Scotland. Bringing together an international line-up of established and emerging scholars, Romantic Ireland: From Tone to Gonne sets out the case for Ireland as a shaping force in the period and takes Irish Studies in new directions, in particular in terms of a cross-cultural comparison with Scotland and the distinct phenomenon of Unionism, thus breaking out of the binaries and double binds of Anglo-Irish approaches. Irish-Scottish Studies is a fresh field of investigation that throws up a number of fascinating insights that enhance our awareness of the interaction between colonialism, nationalism and culture. 4 Introduction

The focus of contemporary and historical criticism has centred on the foreign and war policies of the ministry, but this has failed to take into account the serious and interrelated diplomatic, military, social, and political problems faced by the government.     'Peter 'Porcupine and the 'Bones of Thomas Paine URING the American Revolution the name of Thomas Paine was almost as well known to Americans as that of George D Washington. His pamphlet Common Sense was directly responsible for bringing on the Declaration of Independence. The first number of The Crisis, which begins with the famous sentence "These are the times that try men's souls/' stirred the colonists from New England to Georgia. Written in December, 1776, when the cause of the colonies was in its darkest hour and American troops were deserting, The Crisis gave renewed hope and courage to Wash- ington's ragged army. Succeeding numbers of The Crisis made Paine the official propagandist of the American cause and truly one of the Founding Fathers of the nation. The fame which these writings brought to Thomas Paine during the Revolution is known to every school boy. Not so well known are the pathos and tragedy of the closing years of his life. A national hero at the end of the war, Paine saw his reputation swept away by the currents of reactionary politics and evangelistic religious enthusiasm. Once hailed as the "father of American Independence," his friendship cherished by the great figures of the Revolution—Washington, Jefferson, Samuel Adams, Lafayette, and many others—he spent his last days in obscure poverty, shunned by his former friends and re- viled by his enemies as an atheist! He was denied the right to vote because he was not a citizen. The government refused him the paltry pension which he had been promised.

A: We have a strong track record of delivering successful community based projects that support health and wellbeing (Health), inclusion (Equality), education and diversionary activities (Learning) and employability (Poverty). We work with all age groups from young children through to older people and currently deliver projects locally, nationally and internationally. We work with a variety of partners to deliver our projects. Q: How is the money raised? A: We raise money in a variety of ways. We receive generous donations on a regular and one-off basis from a host of supporters and operate a number of fundraising events and activities throughout the year. These can include, but are not limited to; charity football matches, our Annual Sporting Dinner, match day bucket collections, our Annual Christmas Appeal, and an overseas’ volunteer trip.
