Falconer vi Abstract Stephen Adly Guirgis has created an era-melting play, The Last Days of Judas Iscariot , which explores the timeless debate between divine mercy and free will. A systematic application of Walter R. Fisher’s narrative analysis, through form identification and a functional analysis, determined how Guirgis accomplishes persuasion. This qualitative study focused on Guirgis’s narrative, using Walter R. Fisher's narrative paradigm as a framework to answer the research question(s): (1) If Guirgis's ideology and created world in The Last Days of Judas Iscariot are foreign and imagined, how is narrative probability and narrative fidelity achieved?; and, (2) How does Guirgis persuade his audience through narrative probability and narrative fidelity? Research found that Guirgis achieves narrative probability and narrative fidelity because his dramatic action is complete, self-contained, purposeful, varied, engages and maintains the interest of the audience, and is probable. This thesis concluded that persuasion can only be achieved when narrative probability and narrative fidelity are present. Key Words: Judas Iscariot, Stephen Adly Guirgis, Walter R. Stephen Adly Guirgis has created an era-melting play, The Last Days of Judas Iscariot . The dark humor, courtroom play centers on the biblical story of Judas Iscariot. On the surface, the play debates Judas Iscariot's eternal damnation, but Guirgis has his audience questioning bigger existential questions. Guirgis combines the known with the unknown in order to demand answers to major theological and philosophical questions that have been asked since the beginning of time. Guirgis uses creative freedom to question the eternal damnation of Judas through the play’s setting, characters, and plot. He merges factual events with a time-bending, seriocomically, imagined world between Heaven and Hell. He creates the dialogue of historical, infamous figures, and fictitious characters. By using black comedy and extreme language, it can be assumed that Guirgis is making a mockery of the church. His imagined world portrays his own struggles with the church and what he struggles to understand with his own existential beliefs. His play raises his concerns and questions about the faith, instead of attempting to answer philosophical questions like some of his contemporaries. Before any analysis can progress, it is imperative to define the genre of the play. Guirgis’s The Last Days of Judas Iscariot is a black comedy. A black comedy deals with grotesque or unpleasant situations that attack comfortable assumptions about social taboos; for example, treating death as comedic. The usage of this genre derives from French dramatist Jean Anouilh, whom categorized his plays as either rose or noir (Black Comedy). Black comedies are Falconer 2 also referred to as dark comedies or tragicomedies. Simplistically stated, it is the blend of comedic and tragic aspects. Tragicomedies have commonalities to melodrama, which will be explored further in the Analysis section in this paper. Guirgis's text merits an in-depth analysis and rhetorical critique because of its controversial nature. First, Guirgis loosely references the Bible as he uses biblical events and characters to pose theological questions. Second, he demands the attention of the audience by using urban and vulgar vernacular to show immediacy of the characters, both saints and sinners. Third, Guirgis offers a new persona of Judas Iscariot, undisclosed in the Bible, deliberately studying the character of Judas wholly. A narrative analysis of Guirgis's text will provide an exploration of Guirgis's ideology and how it compares and contrasts to the biblical worldview from which the story of Judas Iscariot stems. This study is significant to those seeking the Spiritual, the non-Spiritual, and those who do not understand the Spiritual. The play is Guirgis's response to

    1 A Study in Bitter Remorse (John 12: 1-8) Today we continue the ancient church season of Lent. The word Lent is derived from the Anglo-Saxon words lencten, meaning "Spring," and lenctentid, which literally means "Springtide" and is also the word used for "March," the month in which the majority of Lent falls. The season of Lent includes 40 days (not counting Sundays) before Easter. Our Roman Catholic friends have been observing this season for much longer than we Protestants. But during my lifetime (41 years) there has been a shift of embracing many of these older church traditions. The number "40" has always had special significance concerning preparation. You’ll remember that on Mount Sinai, preparing to receive the Ten Commandments, "Moses stayed with the Lord for 40 days and 40 nights, without eating any food or drinking any water" (Ex 34:28). Also, that Elijah walked "40 days and 40 nights" to the mountain of the Lord, Mount Horeb (another name for Sinai) (I Kgs 19:8). And most importantly, Jesus fasted and prayed for "40 days and 40 nights" in the desert before He began His public ministry (Mt 4:2). Many churches encourage its members to refrain from something for 40 days that they would otherwise indulge in *story about Maggie and chocolate* People often withhold food/some activity so as to feel closer to the weight of the cross. Maybe you shake hands; maybe you hug them; maybe you even give them a kiss on the cheek. Some of us like to give high fives or fist bumps. Eskimos rub noses; Japanese bow to each other. But have you ever heard of greeting your friends by breathing on them? John tells us that Jesus breathed on his disciples. Why did he do this? Did Jesus exhale one really big breath that reached all the disciples in the room, or did he breathe on each one individually? John doesn't tell us how many breaths Jesus breathed on the disciples, but I think he breathed on each one individually, one at a time, looking each one in the eyes, maybe resting his wounded hands on each one's shoulders while he breathed a divine breath on each disciple's face, a breath that entered each disciple's nostrils. Why did Jesus do this? As he breathed on them, he said, "Peace be with you; receive the Holy Spirit." Peace and the Holy Spirit carried on the breath of Jesus. What's so special about breath? The Bible teaches us that breath is something holy and sacred. In the book of Genesis, "The Lord God formed man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and the man became a living being. In the book of Job, Job says, "The spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life." In the book of Ezekiel, the prophet sees a valley filled with dry bones.

Academic Workshop: Mamet, Harassment, and the Stage The workshop will focus on interdisciplinary approaches to a dramatic text, using David Mamet’s provocative, challenging play Oleanna as a case study. Oleanna, which is widely taught and performed, tells the story of a college student who issues a formal sexual harassment complaint against her college professor. The play is difficult in part because it’s difficult to tell which character is the real victim—raising real questions about different forms of power. More than one version of a key scene will be shown and then a group of MCC colleagues from different academic perspectives will offer insight into the text based on their individual backgrounds. The idea is that a single dramatic text can yield multiple readings, and that we all are better equipped to approach a dramatic text when we have a wider understanding of some of these readings. " Tapping my toe, just tapping my toe" she sings, to the tune of "Singin' in the Rain," before a crowd of kindergarteners at a downtown elementary school in Atlanta. "What a glorious feeling, I'm — nodding my head!" The kids gleefully tap their toes and nod themselves silly as they sing along. "Give yourselves a standing O!" Ms. Edson cries, when the song ends. Her charges scramble to their feet and clap their hands, sending their arms arcing overhead in a giant "O." This willowy 37-year-old woman with tousled brown hair and a big grin couldn't seem more different from Dr. Vivian Bearing, the brilliant, emotionally remote English professor who is the heroine of her play WIT — which has won such unanimous critical acclaim in its small Off- Broadway production. Vivian is a 50-year-old scholar who has devoted her life to the study of John Donne's "Holy Sonnets."
