JOHN VOICE’S “NUMBERS MATCHING” SUNBEAM TIGER . IT’S THE BEST YOU’LL SEE, AND IT’S NOT BEEN BUGGERED ABOUT WITH!!

“THERE COMES A TIME IN THE AFFAIRS OF MEN....” YES, THE DAY STARTED OUT WITH EVERYONE SOMEWHAT NERVOUSLY LOOKING AT THE SKIES (AND BOY, THERE WERE SOME BLACK CLOUDS), BUT I SUPPOSE MARK MUST HAVE SOME PULL WITH THE WEATHER GODS BECAUSE THE DAY TURNED OUT PERFECTLY!! IN FACT, MARLYNE AND I WERE ALMOST THE LAST TO LEAVE AT THE END, AND IT WAS JUST STARTING TO SPIT. WHEW!! 56 CARS TURNED UP, INCLUDING AN EARLY MGB (75000-SERIES SERIAL NO.) WHICH WAS PARKED OUTSIDE AND URGED TO COME IN. LOTS OF NEW ENTRANTS, INCLUDING MANY WITH RECENTLY-ACQUIRED CARS JUDGING BY THE NUMBER OF QUESTIONS CONCERNING CARBURETION AND ELECTRICAL ISSUES (ALL THE OLD LUCAS JOKES REHASHED). JUST TO SHOW HOW NEW SOME OWNERS WERE, ONE FELLOW HADN’T EVEN HEARD THE WARM BEER/REFRIGERATOR ONE.....

SEEING THE OLD GIRL CIRCLING UNDER HER OWN POWER – WELL, MAYBE IT WASN’T QUITE ORGASMIC, BUT IT WAS CERTAINLY UP THERE WITH A GOOD SNEEZE. THE FOLKS FROM C.R.A.P. (CLASSIC RESTORATION AND PRESERV- ATION SOMETHING-OR-OTHER), BEING A DIVISION OF MONTY PYTHON PRO- DUCTIONS, WERE GUIDED BY JOHN CLEESE, BEING PLAYED IN A SHORTENED MANNER BY ONE D. HOLBROW.

THANKFULLY, THE KIWANIS CLUB FROM SARDIS BROUGHT THEIR “EAT STREET SPECIAL” AGAIN THIS YEAR, AND SERVED A GREAT BREAKFAST AND LUNCH. 12 13 14 15 PORTFOLIO BENTLEY SPECIALS THE BENTLEY MOTOR CO. WAS FOUNDED IN 1919 BY WALTER OWEN (“W.O.”) BENTLEY, AND QUICKLY BECAME KNOWN AS PRODUCERS OF HIGH QUALITY MOTOR CARS FOR VERY DISCERNING BUYERS. SUCCESS AT THE LE MANS 24-HR. RACE (WON IN ’24, ‘27, ’28, ’29, AND ’30) ADDED A SPORTING REPUTATION; HOWEVER, MOST BUILT WERE LARGE SALOONS IN 3-, 4½- 6- AND 8-LITRE VERSIONS. BEFORE LONG, TUNERS WERE CONSTRUCTING RACING “SPECIALS” ON BENTLEY CHASSIS, WITH THE RESULT THAT VERY FEW ORIGINAL SALOONS REMAIN. THIS SPECIAL-BUILDING TREND HAS CONTINUED ‘TIL MODERN TIMES, PARTICULARLY WITH A GENTLEMAN BY THE NAME OF BOB PETERSON. PETERSON IS TYPICAL OF MANY SMALL SPECIALISTS IN THE MODERN BRITISH MOTOR INDUSTRY IN THAT HE CONSTRUCTS VERY HIGH QUALITY MOTOR CARS WITH METICULOUS ORIGINAL BENTLEY ATTENTION TO DETAIL. MORE SALOON, NOW VERY PARTICULARLY, HE HAS BECOME RARE KNOWN FOR HIS BENTLEY SPECIALS.

TYPICAL SALOON CONVERSION TO “LE MANS” STYLE TOURER

(MANY OF PETERSON’S CARS ARE BEAUTIFUL RECREATIONS OF FAMOUS BENTLEYS - E.G., THE “EMBIRICOS” AND “BLUE ” BENTLEYS - WHILE OTHERS ARE SIMPLY WILD ORIGINAL CREATIONS (THE 27-LITRE “METEOR”). WE’LL DEAL WITH THESE IN A LATER ARTICLE.) 16 “BLUEBELL”

HERE’S “BLUEBELL” , PROBABLY THE MOST RACED BENTLEY IN THE HISTORY OF THE MARQUE. “BLUEBELL” WAS CREATED BY A MECHANIC NAMED L.C. “MAC” McKENZIE FROM AN ORIGINAL 1928 4½ LITRE SALOON. HE SERVICED THE ORIGINAL CAR FOR ITS OWNER UNTIL 1936, WHEN HE ACQUIRED IT AND CONSTRUCTED THE TWO- SEAT SPECIAL SHOWN HERE. “BLUEBELL” HAS BEEN CONTINUOUSLY RACED SINCE IT WAS BUILT, UNDER A SUCCESSION OF OWNERS.

THE “BLUE TRAIN” BENTLEY

IN JANUARY 1930, THE 'S ROVER LIGHT SIX GAINED A WORLDWIDE REPUTATION WHEN IT WAS THE FIRST SUCCESSFUL PARTICIPANT IN THE BLUE TRAIN RACES, A SERIES OF RECORD-

BREAKING ATTEMPTS BETWEEN AUTOMOBILES “BLUEBELL ” BEING RACED IN THE ‘30S AND IN THE LATE 1920S AND EARLY 1930S. IT SAW A NUMBER OF MOTORISTS AND THEIR OWN OR SPONSORED AUTOMOBILES RACE AGAINST THE , A TRAIN THAT RAN BETWEEN CALAIS AND THE .

ONE EVENING IN MARCH 1930, AT A DINNER AT THE CARLTON HOTEL IN , TALK AROUND THE TABLE HAD SWUNG ROUND TO THE TOPIC OF MOTOR CARS; IN PARTICULAR TO THE ADVERTISEMENT BY ROVER CLAIMING THAT ITS ROVER LIGHT SIX HAD GONE FASTER THAN THE FAMOUS "LE TRAIN BLEU" EXPRESS. CONTENDED THAT JUST TO GO FASTER THAN THE BLUE TRAIN WAS OF NO SPECIAL MERIT. HE RAISED THE STAKES BY ARGUING THAT AT THE WHEEL OF HIS OWN , HE COULD BE AT HIS CLUB IN LONDON BEFORE THE TRAIN REACHED CALAIS AND BET 100 POUND STERLING ON THAT CHALLENGE! THE NEXT DAY, THE 13 MARCH 1930, AS THE BLUE TRAIN STEAMED OUT OF CANNES STATION AT 17:45H, BARNATO, WITH ONE OF HIS FRIENDS WHO HAD GALLANTLY OFFERED TO 17 ACT AS A RELIEF DRIVER, TOOK TO THE MIGHTY BENTLEY AND SET OFF AT THE DOUBLE. FROM ONWARDS THEY HAD TO BATTLE AGAINST HEAVY RAIN. AT

THE GURNEY NUTTING 4:20H, IN BODIED “BLUE TRAIN” AUXERRE, THEY BENTLEY LOST TIME SEARCHING FOR A REFUELING RENDEZVOUS. THROUGH CENTRAL THEY HIT FOG, THEN SHORTLY AFTER THEY HAD A BURST TYRE, REQUIRING THE USE OF THEIR ONE AND ONLY SPARE. AND YET, RACING NON-STOP THROUGH THE NIGHT ALONG THE BUMPY, 1930S ROUTES NATIONALES, THEY REACHED THE COAST AT 10:30H, SAILED OVER TO ENGLAND ON THE CROSS-CHANNEL PACKET, AND WERE NEATLY PARKED OUTSIDE THE CONSERVATIVE CLUB IN ST. JAMES'S STREET, LONDON, BY 15:20H - FOUR MINUTES BEFORE THE BLUE TRAIN REACHED CALAIS. HE WON THE BET; HOWEVER, THE FRENCH AUTHORITIES PROMPTLY FINED HIM A SUM FAR GREATER THAN HIS WINNINGS - FOR RACING ON PUBLIC ROADS.

BLUE TRAIN BENTLEY CONTROVERSY

BARNATO DROVE AN H. J. MULLINER-BODIED BENTLEY SPEED SIX FORMAL SALOON IN THE ACTUAL RACE, WHICH BECAME KNOWN AS THE BLUE TRAIN BENTLEY . TWO MONTHS LATER, ON 21 MAY 1930, HE TOOK DELIVERY OF A NEW BENTLEY SPEED SIX STREAMLINED FASTBACK "SPORTSMAN COUPE" (SEE ABOVE), BODIED BY GURNEY NUTTING. BARNATO NAMED IT THE "BLUE TRAIN SPECIAL" IN MEMORY OF HIS RACE, AND IT TOO BECAME COMMONLY REFERRED TO AS THE BLUE TRAIN BENTLEY . THE H. J. MULLINER-BODYWORK WAS STRIPPED OFF THE ORIGINAL CAR'S CHASSIS TO MAKE PLACE FOR A BESPOKE REPLACEMENT, AS WAS COMMON PRACTICE FOR AUTOMOBILES AT THAT TIME.

WITH GROWING HISTORICAL DISTANCE TO THE EVENT, THE GURNEY NUTTING- BODIED CAR WAS REGULARLY MISTAKEN FOR OR ERRONEOUSLY REFERRED TO AS BEING THE CAR THAT HAD RACED THE BLUE TRAIN. THIS WAS REITERATED IN ARTICLES AND VARIOUS POPULAR MOTORING PAINTINGS DEPICTING THAT CAR RACING "LE TRAIN BLEU". EVEN IN 2005 FOR THE 75TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE RACE, 18 BENTLEY'S PROMOTIONAL MATERIAL CONTINUED THIS DEPICTION AS THE RAKISH COUPE AND THE RELATED DAREDEVIL MYTHOLOGY SYMBOLISED THE BRAND IMAGE BENTLEY WAS ASKED TO PROJECT AS A MARQUE OF THE VOLKSWAGEN GROUP MUCH BETTER THAN THE RATHER STAID FORMAL SALOON BODYWORK BY H. J. MULLINER.

THANKS TO RESEARCH EFFORTS AND A MASSIVE AUTOMOTIVE RESTORATION BY BRUCE AND JOLENE MCCAW OF MEDINA, WASHINGTON – WHO BECAME THE OWNERS OF THE GURNEY NUTTING-BUILT "BLUE TRAIN SPECIAL" – THIS LONG-TIME MISTAKE BECAME FINALLY MORE WIDELY PUBLICISED. THE ORIGINAL H. J. MULLINER BLUE TRAIN BENTLEY BODYWORK WAS ALSO RECONSTRUCTED, SO THAT BOTH CARS ARE NOW IN FULLY RESTORED EXISTENCE. THEY ARE CURRENTLY OWNED BY BRUCE AND JOLENE MCCAW.

THE “EMBIRICOS” BENTLEY

THE “EMBIRICOS” BENTLEY, AS IT IS NOW KNOWN, WAS THE FASTEST SALOON CAR IN BRITAIN BEFORE THE WAR, AND CERTAINLY THE MOST STYLISH. CHASSIS

NUMBER B-27-LE WAS A SPECIAL COMMISSION BY GREEK GENTLEMAN MOTOR RACER AND SHIPPING MAGNATE ANDRÉ MARIS EMBIRICOS. DESIGNED BY FRENCHMAN GEORGES PAULIN AND BUILT BY MARCEL POURTOUT IN JULY 1938, THE MAGNIFICENT AERODYNAMIC ‘CONTINENTAL’ SET HIGH-SPEED RECORDS AND WENT ON TO RACE AT LE MANS THREE TIMES. 19 IT WAS PROBABLY THE MOST REFINED MOTOR CAR EVER TO HAVE COMPETED AT LA SARTHE. TODAY THE ONE-OFF EMBIRICOS BENTLEY IS OWNED BY CALIFORNIAN- BASED ARTURO KELLER, A MAN WELL KNOWN FOR NEVER SELLING ANYTHING.

THE EMBIRICOS STORY.....

LET’S GO BACK TO THE GIDDY DAYS OF THE ’30S, BEFORE WORLD WAR TWO LAID WASTE LARGE SWATHES OF EUROPE AND BANKRUPTED BRITAIN. WALTER OWEN BENTLEY HAD HAD HIS MOTOR COMPANY TAKEN OVER BY ROLLS-ROYCE IN 1931 AND HIS PERPENDICULAR AND THUNDEROUS BENTLEYS HAD BEEN SUPERSEDED BY ROLLS- ROYCE’S RATHER MORE REFINED SILENT SPORTS CARS BUILT AT THE DERBY WORKS, KNOWN COLLOQUIALLY AS “DERBY” BENTLEYS . VERY CAPABLE THOUGH THESE DERBY BENTLEYS WERE, THEY WERE VERY CONSERVATIVE MECHANICALLY AND ESPECIALLY SO IN TERMS OF COACHWORK. EUROPEAN MARQUES WERE EXPERIMENTING WITH AERODYNAMIC DESIGNS AND SOME OF THEIR CREATIONS MADE BENTLEYS LOOK RATHER FRUMPY.

WALTER SLEATOR, BON VIVEUR, SUPERB DRIVER, OWNER OF THE STYLISH FRANCO BRITANNIC GARAGE AND ROLLS-ROYCE REPRESENTATIVE IN PARIS, SAW THIS FRENCH DESIGN REVOLUTION UNFOLDING BEFORE HIM AS HIS CUSTOMERS BEGAN TO COMPLAIN THAT THEIR BENTLEYS WERE BEING BESTED BY SWOOPY MACHINES FROM BUGATTI AND TALBOT-LAGO. 20 AUTOMOTIVE DESIGN WAS GOING AVANT GARDE BUT THE CONSERVATIVE SUITS IN DERBY DID NOT WANT TO PARTAKE. THE FEELING WAS THAT SUPERFAST, STREAMLINED MOTOR CARS WERE OF LITTLE USE ON BRITAIN’S NARROW AND WINDING ROADS, EVEN THOUGH THE AUTOBAHNS WERE BEING LAID IN GERMANY AND FRENCH ROUTES NATIONALES HAD LONG OFFERED THE OPPORTUNITY OF HIGH- SPEED TRAVEL.

BUT SLEATOR CONVINCED THE MEN FROM DERBY THAT HE SHOULD UNDERTAKE A SPECIAL PROJECT FROM PARIS, WITH THE REASSURANCE THAT IF IT FAILED THE BENTLEY WORKS WOULD BE LEFT UNTAINTED. SO IN AUGUST 1936 SLEATOR APPROACHED THE WEALTHY SHIP OWNER AND BANKER ANDRÉ EMBIRICOS WITH THE IDEA OF A RADICAL NEW BENTLEY. EMBIRICOS HAD ADMIRED THE WORK OF DESIGNER GEORGES PAULIN AND GAVE THE PROJECT THE GO-AHEAD. A SCALE WOODEN MODEL OF THE CAR WAS TESTED AT MEUDON NEAR PARIS, THEN AT VICKERS UNDER THE EYE OF IVAN EVERNDEN. A FULL-SCALE WOODEN MODEL WAS TESTED NEXT AND DETAILED TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS WERE ASSESSED.

ON 18 MARCH 1938, CHASSIS NUMBER B-27-LE WAS SHIPPED FROM DERBY TO MARCEL POURTOUT AND THE COMPLETE MOTOR CAR WAS READY FOR ROAD TESTING THREE MONTHS LATER. THE ALUMINIUM COACHWORK WAS LIGHTER BY SOME 350LB (159KG) WHEN COMPARED WITH THE AVERAGE BRITISH COACHBUILT BODY, AND THE 4¼-LITRE ENGINE HAD ITS COMPRESSION RATIO UPPED FROM 6.5:1 TO 8.0:1 AND WAS FITTED WITH LARGER SU CARBURETTORS, INCREASING THE HORSEPOWER FROM 125 TO 148BHP. SHOCK ABSORBERS WERE STIFFENED, ALFIN FRONT BRAKES WERE ADDED TO THE FRONT AND A 2.87:1 TOP GEAR RATIO WAS EMPLOYED.

IT SEEMS THAT ANDRÉ EMBIRICOS WAS VERY GENEROUS AND WAS CONSTANTLY LENDING HIS STRIKING NEW BENTLEY TO ALL SORTS OF TEST DRIVERS. IN JANUARY 1939 IT WAS TWICE TESTED AT MONTLHÉRY, WHERE WALTER SLEATOR SET A SOMEWHAT DISAPPOINTING 107MPH AVERAGE SPEED. THE CAR WAS THEN CRASHED BY EMBIRICOS’ CHAUFFEUR, AFTER WHICH THE ENGINE WAS BLOWN UP WHEN IT WAS OVER-REVVED WHILE RUNNING ON 17-INCH RIMS. THEN IT WAS BORROWED AGAIN FOR A 1000-MILE JAUNT ACROSS GERMANY TO TRY OUT THE NEW AUTOBAHNS. SLEATOR DECIDED TO CHALLENGE THE 80MPH AVERAGE SET FROM BERLIN TO BY GENERAL HUHNLEIN DRIVING A GROSSER MERCEDES-BENZ. IN VERY DIFFICULT ICY CONDITIONS, THE EMBIRICOS MANAGED 110MPH FOR FIVE MILES AND 112MPH FOR FOUR MILES. IT WAS LATER SOLD AND WENT ON TO FINISH 6TH , 14 TH , AND 22 ND IN THE 1949, ’50, AND ’51 LE MANS 24-HR. RACES. IN 1951, IT WAS SHOWING 120,000 MILES ON THE CLOCK!!

August’s Mystery Car was a ZAGATO-BODIED JAGUAR XK140 OF ALL THE XK-POWERED JAGUARS, VERY FEW RECEIVED CUSTOM COACHWORK, AND EVEN FEWER WERE BODIED IN . HOWEVER, ITALIAN DEALER GUIDO MODIANO COMMISSIONED ZAGATO TO REBODY ONE OF HIS BENT XK140’S. DURING THE BUILD, ZAGATO WAS ORDERED TO BUILD THE CAR TO HIGH STANDARDS WHICH WAS REFLECTED BY IT'S FULLY SUEDE INTERIOR (EVEN IN THE FERRARI 250 ZAGATOS, FROM WHICH THIS JAGUAR BORROWS SOME TRAITS, SUEDE WAS NEVER ORDERED). RESTORATION COMMENCED IN ITALY AND WAS COMPLETED IN TIME FOR THE 2003 PEBBLE BEACH CONCOURS. Friday, September 21 - Depart Tim Horton’s, Lickman Road, Chilliwack @ 9:00 AM

We will be heading east via Highway 1 through the Fraser Canyon stopping for lunch in Spences Bridge. From Spences Bridge, we will follow the Nicola Highway (HWY # 8) mostly east and turn north onto Mamit Lake Road (HWY 97c) past Mamit Lake and passing through the community of Logan Lake. From Logan Lake, we take Meadow Lake Road (HWY # 97d) heading north east past Walloper Lake, Lac la Jeune and McConnell Lake and descending into Kamloops. We have a group rate at the Hospitality Inn, Kamloops. It’s relatively cheap, clean and has an outstanding view of the Thompson and North Thompson Rivers.

24 Saturday, September 22

Early departure (7:00-7:30?) heading north to Sun Peaks Classic Car Gathering. Joining us will be the Calgary Sports Car Club (approx. 20 cars?), Kamloops Old English Car Club (10 cars?), Kamloops Vintage Car Club (8 cars?), and possibly some from the Kelowna area. There are special events organized throughout the day including a lunch. Depart Sun Peaks about 3 PM via scenic route mapped out by the OECC ending at the Noble Pig Brew Pub for supper. For those who would rather drive than socialize, OECC is mapping out a scenic Saturday drive continuing on from Sun Peaks on Saturday morning.

We’re having a PHOTO CONTEST!!

Entries will be displayed at the Christmas Banquet.

HERE ARE THE RULES:

1. Two categories: "British Cars" : as a main subject or theme (e.g., could be a photo of a hood ornament or a whole car); "Everything Else" : People, members, club events or just your favourite photo;

2. The entrant must actually have taken the photo. (not cut out of a magazine or borrowed from a friend);

3. Open to members and their spouses, 1 photo per category per entrant (i.e. max 2 photos per person, 4 per couple). Guests may enter if they are attending the Christmas Banquet. Members, not attending the Banquet may enter but must make arrangements to get their photos to the banquet.

4. Photos to be hard copy, 5”x7”, and unframed . Put your name and category on the back of your photo and bring it to the Christmas Banquet for judging. Judging will be done by anonymous ballot by all attendees of the Banquet (so no bribes).

5. Winning photos will be featured in the HOOTER, and There will be prizes!!
