Moths of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge
MOTHS OF UMATILLA NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE: Results from 10 sites Sampled May 22-23, 2017 Dana Ross 1005 NW 30th Street Corvallis, OR 97330 (541) 758-3006 [email protected] SUMMARY Macro-moths were sampled from the Umatilla National Wildlife Refuge for a third time 22-23 May, 2017 as part of an ongoing pollinator inventory. Blacklight traps were deployed for a single night at ten sites representative of major plant communities in the McCormack and Paterson Units. A grand total of 331 specimens and 36 moth species were sampled. Of those, 17 species (47%) were documented from the refuge for the first time. In a somewhat larger geographical context, 21 species were recorded for the first (8), second (7) or third (6) time from Morrow County, Oregon while 4 species were documented for the first (1) or second (3) time from Benton County, Washington. INTRODUCTION National Wildlife Refuges protect important habitats for many plant and animal species. Refuge inventories have frequently included plants, birds and mammals, but insects - arguably the most abundant and species-rich group in any terrestrial habitat - have largely been ignored. Small size, high species richness and a lack of identification resources have all likely contributed to their being overlooked. Certain groups such as moths, however, can be easily and inexpensively sampled using light traps and can be identified by regional moth taxonomists. Once identified, many moth species can be tied to known larval hostplant species at a given site, placing both insect and plant within a larger ecological context. Moths along with butterflies belong to the insect Order Lepidoptera. -

This an excerpt of Advances in Dryland Farming in the Inland Pacific Northwest Advances in Dryland Farming in the Inland Pacific Northwest represents a joint effort by a multi-disciplinary group of scientists from across the region over a three-year period. Together they compiled and synthesized recent research advances as well as economic and other practical considerations to support farmers as they make decisions relating to productivity, resilience, and their bottom lines. The effort to produce this book was made possible with the support of the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture through the REACCH project. This six-year project aimed to enhance the sustainability of Pacific Northwest cereal systems and contribute to climate change mitigation. The project, led by the University of Idaho, also convened scientists from Washington State University, Oregon State University, the USDA Agricultural Research Service, and Boise State University. The genera Faronta Smith, 1908 and Strigania Hampson, 1905 were synonymized under the genus Dargida Walker, 1856 by (Rodríguez and Angulo, 2005). In their revision, these authors listed 53 species of Dargida, creating fourteen new combinations and listing new records. I have taken only two species of the genus in Louisiana: Dargida rubripennis (Grote & Robinson, 1870) (Fig. D. rubripennis D. diffusa 1a,b) and Dargida diffusa (Walker, 1856) (Fig. 1c.) Both species were previously reported for Louisiana, with adults captured during the month of September using ultraviolet light traps (Chapin and Callahan, 1967). Fig 3. Within Louisiana, four adults of diffusa were captured on four separate occasions, once by Chapin and Callahan, and on three occasions (May and October) by this author. The type locality for diffusa is Nova Scotia, Canada. Covell listed the range for diffusa to include New Foundland to Virginia, west through Canada, south to Texas during the months of April through October in two to three broods. -

Leucania roseilinea (Köhler, 1947), Leucania phaeoneura Hampson, 1913, Leucania mocoides Dognin, 1897, Leucania alboradiata (Hampson, 1905) and Lasionycta radiata (Köhler, 1966), are here combined with the genus Dargida Walker for the first time (comb. nov.).
