Guillermo Del Toro’S Bleak House
GuillermoAt Home With Monstersdel Toro By James Balestrieri Guillermo del Toro’s Bleak House. Photo ©Josh White/ JWPictures.com. LOS ANGELES, CALIF. — The essence of “Guillermo del Toro: At Home With Monsters,” the strange and wonderful exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) through November 27, is this: Guillermo del Toro, born in 1964, is a major writer and director whose films include Cronos (1993), The Devil’s Backbone (2001), Hellboy (2004), Pan’s Labyrinth (2006), Pacific Rim (2013) and Crimson Peak (2015). He is a master who creates worlds that embrace horror, science fiction, fantasy and fairy tales. He insists that, as fantastic as they are, these worlds are located and grounded beside, beneath and in the real world, our world — a world, he might argue, that we merely imagine as real. The membrane separating these worlds is thin, porous and portal-ridden. The worlds are distorted reflections of one another. This distortion becomes the occasion for his ideas and art. Page from Notebook 2 by Guillermo del Toro. Leather-bound notebook, ink on paper, 8 by 10 by 1½ inches. Collection of Guillermo del Toro. ©Guillermo del Toro. Photo courtesy Insight Editions. Jointly organized by LACMA with the Minneapolis Institute of Art and the Art Gallery of Ontario, this first retrospective of the filmmaker’s work arrays sculpture, paintings, prints, photography, costumes, ancient artifacts, books, maquettes and film to create a complex portrait of a creative genius. Roughly 60 of the 500 objects on view are from LACMA’s collection. More belong to the artist. -

First-Run Smoking Presentations in U.S. Movies 1999-2006
First-Run Smoking Presentations in U.S. Movies 1999-2006 Jonathan R. Polansky Stanton Glantz, PhD CENTER FOR TOBAccO CONTROL RESEARCH AND EDUCATION UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN FRANCISCO SAN FRANCISCO, CA 94143 April 2007 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Smoking among American adults fell by half between 1950 and 2002, yet smoking on U.S. movie screens reached historic heights in 2002, topping levels observed a half century earlier.1 Tobacco’s comeback in movies has serious public health implications, because smoking on screen stimulates adolescents to start smoking,2,3 accounting for an estimated 52% of adolescent smoking initiation. Equally important, researchers have observed a dose-response relationship between teens’ exposure to on-screen smoking and smoking initiation: the greater teens’ exposure to smoking in movies, the more likely they are to start smoking. Conversely, if their exposure to smoking in movies were reduced, proportionately fewer teens would likely start smoking. To track smoking trends at the movies, previous analyses have studied the U.S. motion picture industry’s top-grossing films with the heaviest advertising support, deepest audience penetration, and highest box office earnings.4,5 This report is unique in examining the U.S. movie industry’s total output, and also in identifying smoking movies, tobacco incidents, and tobacco impressions with the companies that produced and/or distributed the films — and with their parent corporations, which claim responsibility for tobacco content choices. Examining Hollywood’s product line-up, before and after the public voted at the box office, sheds light on individual studios’ content decisions and industry-wide production patterns amenable to policy reform. -

IMPOLITENESS STRATEGIES IN PITCH PERFECT AND PITCH PERFECT 2 MOVIES A THESIS Submitted to Letters and Humanities Faculty in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for Degree Strata One (S1) DANTI YANIAR 1113026000028 ENGLISH LETTERS DEPARTMENT FACULTY OF LETTERS AND HUMANITIES SYARIF HIDAYATULLAH STATE ISLAMIC UNIVERSITY JAKARTA 2017 ABSTRACT Danti Yaniar, Impoliteness Strategies in Pitch Perfect and Pitch Perfect 2 Movies. Thesis. Jakarta: English Letters Department, Letters and Humanities Faculty, Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University of Jakarta, September 2017. This research is on Pragmatic scope that focuses on impoliteness strategies. The unit of analysis is Pitch Perfect movies transcript. It is a qualitative research. It is intended to identify the types of impoliteness strategies chosen by characters, how the characters respond the FTAs, and the features of offending event that trigger the characters to do impoliteness. This research used Impoliteness strategies theory by Jonathan Culpeper as the main theory, Impoliteness strategies by Derek Bousfield, and Offending Event by Timothy Jay as the supporting theories. As the result, it was found that all five strategies were chosen by the characters. The strategies from the most chosen to the less chosen were as follow positive impoliteness strategy, negative impoliteness strategy, bald on record impoliteness strategy, sarcasm or mock politeness strategy, and withhold politeness strategy. The characters frequently harmed the addressees‟ face by insulting name calling and using obscure language sub-strategies. The delivered FTAs made the addressees dominantly evaluated them with responses. The addressee responded the FTAs by choosing offensive countering. The characters mostly countered the offender by asking a challenge question which is in negative impoliteness strategy.
