LOS ANGELES, CALIF. — The essence of “Guillermo del Toro: At Home With Monsters,” the strange and wonderful exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) through November 27, is this: Guillermo del Toro, born in 1964, is a major writer and director whose films include Cronos (1993), The Devil’s Backbone (2001), Hellboy (2004), Pan’s Labyrinth (2006), Pacific Rim (2013) and Crimson Peak (2015). He is a master who creates worlds that embrace horror, science fiction, fantasy and fairy tales. He insists that, as fantastic as they are, these worlds are located and grounded beside, beneath and in the real world, our world — a world, he might argue, that we merely imagine as real. The membrane separating these worlds is thin, porous and portal-ridden. The worlds are distorted reflections of one another. This distortion becomes the occasion for his ideas and art. Jointly organized by LACMA with the Minneapolis Institute of Art and the Art Gallery of Ontario, this first retrospective of the filmmaker’s work arrays sculpture, paintings, prints, photography, costumes, ancient artifacts, books, maquettes and film to create a complex portrait of a creative genius. Roughly 60 of the 500 objects on view are from LACMA’s collection. More belong to the artist. -

A Film by John Madden Production Notes Synopsis Even the best secret agents carry a debt from a past mission. Rachel Singer must now face up to hers… Filmed on location in Tel Aviv, the U.K., and Budapest, the espionage thriller The Debt is directed by Academy Award nominee John Madden (Shakespeare in Love). The screenplay, by Matthew Vaughn & Jane Goldman and Peter Straughan, is adapted from the 2007 Israeli film Ha-Hov [The Debt]. At the 2011 Beaune International Thriller Film Festival, The Debt was honoured with the Special Police [Jury] Prize. The story begins in 1997, as shocking news reaches retired Mossad secret agents Rachel (played by Academy Award winner Helen Mirren) and Stephan (two-time Academy Award nominee Tom Wilkinson) about their former colleague David (Ciarán Hinds of the upcoming Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy). All three have been venerated for decades by Israel because of the secret mission that they embarked on for their country back in 1965-1966, when the trio (portrayed, respectively, by Jessica Chastain [The Tree of Life, The Help], Marton Csokas [The Lord of the Rings, Dream House], and Sam Worthington [Avatar, Clash of the Titans]) tracked down Nazi war criminal Dieter Vogel (Jesper Christensen of Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace), the feared Surgeon of Birkenau, in East Berlin. While Rachel found herself grappling with romantic feelings during the mission, the net around Vogel was tightened by using her as bait. At great risk, and at considerable personal cost, the team’s mission was accomplished – or was it? The suspense builds in and across two different time periods, with startling action and surprising revelations that compel Rachel to take matters into her own hands. -

Part memoir, soldiers and civilians who lived during this violent and uncertain period of world part philosophical musing, and part scientific findings, Catron’s book explores history. The full exhibit is available September 1 to November 5. what it means to love someone, to be loved and how we present our love to the world. What makes love last? Journal of American Studies of Turkey 39 (2014): 113-122 Mako Mori and the Gender Politics of Pacific Rim (2013) Nathanael Hood Carefully balancing on the top of an escape pod somewhere in the South China Sea, pilots Raleigh Becket (Charlie Hunnam) and Mako Mori (Rinko Kukuchi) embrace after successfully saving the world from an invasion of giant, extra-dimensional monsters known as “kaiju.” This ending from Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim (2013) seems to cohere to traditional narrative tropes within the Western action genre wherein the hero triumphantly kisses his love interest after a great struggle, battle, or fight. And yet, a close inspection of this scene reveals a shocking subversion of this reliable concluding scenario: Becket and Mori do not kiss. They draw close, touch foreheads, and even lean in for a hug as the screen cuts to the credits. But again, they do not consummate their victory with a kiss. The absence of a kiss wasn’t an oversight on del Toro’s part. In fact, it was a conscious creative choice, recounting in an interview that he had filmed three different versions of the scene including one where they did kiss. Del Toro said: “We did one version where they kiss and it almost felt weird. They’re good friends, they’re pals, good colleagues” (qtd. Faraci). The idea that two (supposedly) heterosexual heroes would not fall in love during the course of a film and instead become good friends seems oddly counter-intuitive. For western audiences, the development of romantic feelings concluding with a kiss between the protagonist and their love interest is quintessential for creating a sense of narrative closure (Doane 196). -

It also displays del Toro’s unique style, his vision of movies as ‘durchkonzipierte und bis ins letzte Detail kontrollierte Gesamtkunstwerke [conceptualised and detailed, total works of art]’.[4] Set in Buffalo, New York, around 1900, the film introduces Edith Cushing, the young, white, upper-class daughter of industrial mogul Carter Cushing, who spends her time writing ghost stories and trying to get them pub- lished.[5] When English baronet Thomas Sharpe and his sister Lucille arrive in Buffalo to find investors for Thomas’ clay mining invention, Edith falls in love with him. Her father is very suspicious of the siblings and after black- mailing them to leave Buffalo following the revelation that Thomas is already married, he is killed by an unknown figure in black who is later revealed as Lucille. -
