Cabell, John Hartwell Cocke, Daniel Drake, James Hoge, Andrew Dousa Hepburn, Charles McGuffey Hepburn, Henrietta McGuffey Hepburn, Nicholas Longworth, Harriet McGuffey Love, Alexander H. A curator at the McGuffey Museum, located at the former Oxford home of William Holmes McGuffey, Mrs. Hughes was so interested in McGuffey that she amassed this collection of materials relating to him and his family.

Hartman offered what he believed to be constructive criticism and referenced a critique which he had mailed to ARRC members.     Alexander L. Baugh: Baptism for the Dead Outside Temples 47 “For This Ordinance Belongeth to My House”: The Practice of Baptism for the Dead Outside the Nauvoo Temple Alexander L. Baugh The Elders’ Journal of July 1838, published in Far West, Missouri, includ- ed a series of twenty questions related to Mormonism. The answers to the questions bear the editorial pen of Joseph Smith. Question number sixteen posed the following query: “If the Mormon doctrine is true, what has become of all those who have died since the days of the apostles?” The Prophet answered, “All those who have not had an opportunity of hearing the gospel, and being administered to by an inspired man in the flesh, must have it hereafter before they can be finally judged.”1 The Prophet’s thought is clear—the dead must have someone in mortality administer the saving ordinances for them to be saved in the kingdom of God. Significantly, the answer given by the Prophet marks his first known statement concerning the doctrine of vicari- ous work for the dead. However, it was not until more than two years later that the principle was put into practice.2 On 15 August 1840, Joseph Smith preached the funeral sermon of Seymour Brunson during which time he declared for the first time the doc- trine of baptism for the dead.3 Unfortunately, there are no contemporary accounts of the Prophet’s discourse. However, Simon Baker was present at the funeral services and later stated that during the meeting the Prophet read extensively from 1 Corinthians 15, then noted a particular widow in the congregation whose son had died without baptism.

February 17, 2016 THIS WEEK: Alexander Clark, Iowa Diplomat Who Served as United States Minister to Liberia BACKGROUND: The Clark family moved from Washington County, Pennsylvania, to Cincinnati, Ohio, when Alexander was 13 years old. In Ohio, Mr. Clark studied with an uncle to become a barber. Mr. Clark came to Iowa at the age of 16. His family settled in Bloomington (now Muscatine) in 1842. Mr. Clark took advantage of every opportunity to establish himself as a businessman in Iowa. He began his career as a barber, invested in real estate, and sold wood he harvested from land he owned near the Mississippi River. In 1848, Mr. Clark married Catherine Griffin. They had five children, three of whom survived childhood. Mr. Clark Fights for Equality, Becomes U.S. Minister Mr. Clark helped to organize the only black regiment from Iowa in the Civil War—the First Iowa Volunteers of African Descent. In 1863, Mr. Clark enlisted in the war, but a disability kept him out of active service. Mr. Clark was also a Mason, eventually becoming Grand Master. President Ulysses Grant offered Mr. Clark the post of U.S. Minister to Haiti, which he Alexander Clark declined because of the meager salary. 1826-1891 In 1867, Mr. Clark’s daughter, Susan, was denied access to the school nearest their home because she was black.

Thesis Summary Aston University The Role of Social Agents in the Translation into English of the Novels of Naguib Mahfouz Linda Ahed Alkhawaja Doctor of Philosophy (by Research) April, 2014 This research investigates the field of translation in an Egyptain context around the work of the Egyptian writer and Nobel Laureate Naguib Mahfouz by adopting Pierre Bourdieu’s sociological framework. Bourdieu’s framework is used to examine the relationship between the field of cultural production and its social agents. The thesis includes investigation in two areas: first, the role of social agents in structuring and restructuring the field of translation, taking Mahfouz’s works as a case study; their role in the production and reception of translations and their practices in the field; and second, the way the field, with its political and socio-cultural factors, has influenced translators’ behaviour and structured their practices.
