That is twice the number of persons in 2018, and is a reflection of what is occurring in the RHF Fast Facts: USA and in many parts of the world. At RHF our goal is to serve people for a better life, and a better life often results in a much longer life. Our oldest resident is 107 and - Employs nearly 2,900 living independently. people throughout the United States, Puerto Rico and the Many times we have talked about how quality housing with services helps people stay U.S. Virgin Islands. out of hospitals and saves the government (us) money. The problem is that the HUD expenditures for 202 housing are on the discretionary side of the federal government - More than 22,500 people budget, and the savings are on the Health and Human Services side of the budget, call an RHF community which is nondiscretionary. You have probably also heard that, in the USA, 10,000 “home” persons a day turn 65 and many do not have sufficient savings for their retirement years. Some have had meaningful jobs but their pay did not keep pace with inflation, - We now have communities in some have had solid retirement ideas but a health incident or other problem changed 29 states, Washington, D.C., everything, and some have lived beyond their personal life expectation. Whatever Puerto Rico and the U. S. the reason, reality must be addressed, and that is our mission … to provide as may Virgin Islands. persons as possible with a better life than they would have had if RHF had never existed. Those 10,000 people a day turning 65 equate to about 3.6 million people - 104 RHF residents will be a year in the USA, and we’re told that about half of them do not have the funds to 100 years old or older in 2019 provide for adequate housing. and a significant percentage of them are still living Since our previous annual report, we have added three communities to our mission: independently. Crenshaw Villas, Crenshaw Gardens, and Paseo at the Californian, all in Los Angeles. You may have read in our RHF Today that when we accepted applications for Crenshaw - We dedicated Crenshaw Villas, a 50-apartment tax credit community for older adults in Los Angeles, we had Villas, a 50-unit community in more than 750 applications. And when we accepted applications for Crenshaw Los Angeles, California . It is a Gardens, a 49-apartment tax credit community for low-income families in Los Angeles, Tax Credit senior community. we had over 3,000 applications. We realize that not every city and state has the number of residents that Los Angeles has, but the need for more affordable housing is nationwide. We continue to work and plan for an 800-apartment community for older adults in Honolulu. This will be constructed in stages over the next decade. We regularly evaluate possibilities for new construction and acquisition. (Continue on page 5) 4 RHF www.rhf.org "We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give"… How true these words by Sir Winston Churchill are. I have often been asked by friends and former colleagues why I continue to serve on various non-profit boards.

  • Retirement, Cardiovascular Disease and Its Risk Factors in China
Retirement, Cardiovascular Disease and its Risk Factors in China Baowen Xue Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy UCL 2017 1 Declaration I, Baowen Xue, confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. Signature: ……………………………………………… Baowen Xue Date: ……………………………………………… 2 Abstract Population ageing and proposals for delaying retirement in many countries have led to greater interest in understanding the potential long-term associations between retirement and cardiovascular disease (CVD) and CVD risk factors. Most relevant studies were conducted in Western countries. The cross-national comparison between China and England conducted by this thesis revealed that China has a much earlier retirement age than England, and the cross-sectional associations of retirement and CVD and CVD risk factors are different in the Chinese context, and these associations are moderated by personal and family characteristics in both countries. It is important to consider reverse causality when investigating the health effects of retirement. Thus, this thesis assessed the longitudinal associations between retirement and CVD risk factors over a 17-year period both before and after retirement among 1,084 people who participated in the China Health and Nutrition Survey at least once prior to and once after the year in which they retired. Piecewise models, centred at the year of retirement, were applied. Retirement was accompanied by a reduction in diastolic blood pressure, a slowdown in the increase of both systolic blood pressure and waist circumference, and a reduction in the probability of being a heavy drinker.
