Greetings! In This Issue

A month ago the FAA announced a massive Hangar Clean Up closure of towers with less than 150,000 flight operations or 10,000 commercial March Against Hunger Campaign operations per year-173 towers across the nation. This action included eight airports in Weekend Getaway Contest (Walla Walla, Grant County, Olympia, , Renton, , Paine Field Aviation Day Tacoma Narrows and Yakima). Additionally, Field and Spokane would lose their Joe midnight shifts. On March 22, the FAA confirmed that all of the Contract Towers on Welcome to Suzanne Hamlet Shatto this list would be closed beginning April 7, 2013. The fate of Paine Field and Moses Pilot Highlight Lake, which both have FAA staffed towers, was not announced, but we understand that

Joe Honolulu Flying Heritage Collection

Joseph F. Martinez, best known as Joe Historic Flight Foundation, Restoration Center Honolulu, passed away at home on March 1, 2013 with Linda and Dominique at his side. Restoration Center

Joe was born in Honolulu, HI to Lucea Martinez and the late Jose A. Martinez. He Legend Flyers - ME 262 Project grew up in Kalihi Valley the eldest of seven children. Upon graduation from Farrington Narbeck Wildlife Sanctuary High School he joined the Navy. He proudly served in Vietnam from June 1966 to September 1969. His last duty assignment Friends of Narbeck Annual Earth Day was on the USS Hissem. Except for an 11 Celebration year position at Fliteline Services on Paine Field in Everett where he fueled/defueled airplanes, his career was in sales. He was enthusiastic and knowledgeable about any product he was selling but never pushy.

Joe never let cancer diminish living life to the fullest. His sense of humor, laughing before he could get to the punch line of a joke, and his huge smile are memories we'll hold dear.

Special thanks were made to Dan, Chuck and Patti, Ann, Craig and Stephanie; Joe valued your friendship. A special thank you to Linda's friends at Evergreen and to Group Health Hospice for their support.

Donations in memory of Joe may be made to Cancer Care Alliance, seattlecca.org.

Economics, Psychology and Education and a Master degree in Education, Shatto fits in comfortably well with the Airport Staff. The Airfield Construction and Runway Airport is glad to have her on the team and look forward to her work to expand Closures and improve the databases, vehicle administration, and FOD Once again the Paine Field Airport has a busy programs. Welcome aboard, Suzanne! summer ahead for airfield construction.

Pilot Highlight The first project begins Wednesday, May 15 through Friday May 24 when the Airport will close the first 1000' of runway 16R in order to install a jet fuel pipeline north of the 16R blast pad. There will 8,010' of runway available during this time.

The next major project is the rehabilitation of runway 16L-34R, the small parallel runway. 16L-34R will close Monday, May 20 and be closed for two months through mid-July. During this time, the runway will be completely torn up and rebuilt. Major elements of this project include lowering the hump in the middle of the runway, significant drainage system improvements and realignment of the midfield intersections to be located at the midpoint of the runway. Additionally, the perimeter road around the north end of the runway will be lowered, which will minimize the height restriction for vehicles transiting that road.

Please note that when the small parallel runway 16L- 34R closes for two months, the Airport will be down to a single runway. The Airport has worked hard to minimize this duration by only allowing the contractor a short duration for this work. Crews will work hard to complete the work in the shortest amount of time possible.

If you have any questions about these projects, please contact the Airport Operations team [email protected]
