Generally, ontologies are a means for knowledge represen- tation and reuse. They provide a shared understanding about a knowledge domain. EOS ex- tends the scope of ontologies by offering means to also formalize epistemological processes, i.e. guidelines for knowledge processing that may be employed in knowledge acquisition, generation and retrieval tasks. This general idea is molded into an EOS framework for epis- temological ontology-driven systems for knowledge processing. On this formal basis we will show how an actual EOS system can be designed, implemented and successfully put to work. -

PALAU PUBLIC LIBRARY BACKGROUND The Palau Public Library (PPL), was established in 1964, comes under the Ministry of Education. It is the only public library in the Republic of Palau, with collections totaling more than 20,000. The library has three full-time staff, the Librarian, the Library Assistant, and the Library Aide/Bookmobile Operator. The mission of the PPL is to serve as a gateway to lifelong learning and easy access to a wide range of information resources to ensure the residents of Palau will be successful, literate, and resourceful in the Palauan society and world. The PPL strives to provide access to materials, information resources, and services for community residents of all ages for professional and personal development, enjoyment, and educational needs. In addition, the library provides access to EBSCOHost databases and links to open access sources of scholarly information. It seeks to promote easy access to a wide range of resources and information and to create activities and programs for all residents of Palau. The PPL serves as the library for Palau High School, the only public high school in the Republic of Palau. -

Anastasia Kerameos There was a tremendous response to the call for papers, illustrating the importance and interest in classification to the U.K. cataloguing and 11-16 John Akeroyd & metadata community. The classification discussed in this issue comes in many flavours, including the usage of classification schemes, digital tools Aida Slavic for classification, the theory of classification, reclassification, and much 17-20 Vanda Broughton more besides. 21-26 Sean Goddard & The issue starts by exploring the usage of classification schemes. Deborah Lee and Anastasia Kerameos outline the results of a survey Tim Haillay into U.K. classification practices, linked to the recent CILIP CIG workshop “Thinking about classification”. John Ackeroyd and Aida Slavic 27-29 Jane Del-Pizzo discuss how UDC is used, including survey results relating to the U.K. 30-33 Marcin Trzmielewski, and the use of UDC in repositories and as part of catalogue records. Vanda Broughton discusses classification theory and how classification Claudio Gnoli, Marco (and classification schemes) are still a critical part of organizing Lardera, Gaia Heidi information. The Science Library Catalog: A Springboard for Information Literacy SLMQ Volume 24, Number 2, Winter 1996 Virginia A. Walter, Christine L. Borgman, and Sandra G. Hirsh, Department of Library and Information Science, Graduate School of Education and Information Studies, University of California, Los Angeles. The world of electronic information is increasingly important, and opening that world to children is a critical part of the library media specialist’s job. That task would be much easier, of course, if electronic information resources were more “child-friendly.” A number of researchers in our field are tackling design issues related to children’s use of these resources, and the creators of the Science Library Catalog (SLC) are pioneers in this effort. Led by Christine Borgman, this research team has been designing successive versions of the SLC and using them as a platform for longitudinal research for almost a decade. In this column, the team summarizes its experiences to date. The column outlines the cognitive theories that have informed the SLC’s ongoing design; describes the catalog itself; explains the continuing research effort based on the SLC; and discusses the research results-emphasizing the findings that are most relevant to school library media specialists as they seek to develop children’s information skills. References to others’ work-including Paul Solomon’s fall 1994 “Current Research” column-suggest the expanding research base that is beginning to establish design criteria for electronic information resources for children. -

Introduction Knowledge Technologies are used to capture and organise knowledge, to store and retrieve it, to keep it up to date, to disseminate it and to reuse it in different contexts. Knowledge Technologies provide solutions that enable companies to turn individual knowledge into manageable assets. They are vital to the success of companies seeking a competitive advantage in a knowledge-based economy. This article intends to give a survey of the application of knowledge technologies in engineering design. The article gives a short outline of knowledge management and knowledge technologies. The goal is to have a closer look at knowledge related research in engineering design. The article adopts a common framework for knowledge technologies. This framework is a basis to assess recent research contributions. The conclusion suggests areas for future research. 2. Knowledge and Knowledge Management We define knowledge pragmatically as information sufficiently interpreted to enable action. Information might be defined as ‘raw’ data that has been structured and represented for the human senses. Knowledge management aims to make an organisation’s knowledge – information and its corresponding contextual interpretation – available to increase business performance. Knowledge management is the sum of all the processes that govern the identification, creation, capture, dissemination, maintenance and utilisation of knowledge. Knowledge management is a blockbuster trend of today’s business: The amount of information available within and across organisations is increasing. Other trends are a shortage of skilled labour, shortened product life cycles, further rise of global commerce, and the Internet. -
Summary of the Knowledge-Creating Company

How Japanese Companies Create the Dynamics of Innovation Oxford University Press, New York Summary of the knowledge-creating company This is a summary of the book The Knowledge‐Creating Company by Nonaka and Takeuchi (1995), including few my own reflections on the volume. Part I : Summary Knowledge‐Creating Company is a book worthy of its name. The definition, utilization and production of knowledge are the themes of this hardback. The book includes a novel theory from two authors supported by their case studies from Japanese industry and an extensive philosophical introduction into Western and Eastern epistemology. The philosophy and the examples mainly serve to justify and illustrate the main contribution of the book, which is an outline of knowledge creation, use and forms of knowledge. I will start by reviewing the forms of knowledge, dismissing the epistemological concerns and the parts on corporate strategy. Knowledge The book relies on the taxonomy of explicit and implicit knowledge adopted from Michael Polanyi. Polanyi had a history in chemistry, but later on shifted his interests to the philosophy of science and published books on tacit knowing (Polanyi, 1958, 1967). As described in Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Polanyi referenced 14.11.2009), Polanyi’s interest in epistemology shows in appreciation of “role played by inherited practices” for knowledge, and also passing knowledge via apprenticeship, through observation and guidance of a master.
