Citizens Advice Bureau

As a result of our close relationship with Cheshire West CAB (Senior Lecturer Wendy Steel sits on the trustee management group) a record number of law students have become volunteers on the CAB’s Gateway scheme. This is often the first point of contact that members of the public have with the CAB and the volunteers either provide initial advice or support or in more complex matters arrange for the member of the public to attend the CAB and have a face to face interview with a volunteer.

Scholarship

Joshua Walters was also successful in obtaining a major scholarship from the Inner Temple which will pay his fees and support his other training costs on the Bar Professional Training Course.

Student Law Society

The Society has been active again this year arranging a number of educational and social events which this year included a trip to London. The highlight of the educational talks was provided by Chief Inspector Simon Price of the Cheshire Constabulary who gave a presentation on the running of a recent murder investigation from the first call to the police through to the actual prosecution and trial of the accused. The social calendar of the society was concluded with another successful annual ball at the Queen Hotel and both honorary presidents HH Judge Elgan Edwards and HH Judge Derek Halbert attended. Local Links and Hopes for the Future

The University Law School has retained and enhanced strong links with the local legal sector and we would like to thank the following for their assistance and support this year: DTM , DWF LLP, LLP, Hillyer McKeown solicitors, St. John’s Buildings (barristers chambers), Linen Hall Chambers, Cheshire West Legal Services, Cheshire Constabulary, Chester magistrates court association, the in house legal team of Shop Direct, the College of Law, staff at the local courts and HH Judge Elgan Edwards, Honorary Recorder of Chester and HH Judge Derek Halbert, the presiding civil judge for Cheshire. We apologise to anyone inadvertently omitted.

A number of other links, local and international are being discussed, amongst others the possibility of offering students clinical and a short period studying in a German University.
