Clash of Philosophies: Liberal, Conservative, & Radical

-The study of the fundamental nature of knowledge, reality, and existence, esp. when considered as an academic discipline. - Philosophies are ways of thinking of the world, universe or society and trying to explain happenings. Liberals - Mostly middle-class business leaders and merchants.
- They wanted to give more power to elected parliaments, but only the educated and the landowners would vote.
-Wanted to give power to educated parliament.
-The French declaration of rights of man and of the citizen is a foundational document of liberalism.
Conservative - Usually a wealthy property owners and nobility. They argued for protecting the traditional monarchies.
- Started in the UK during the Tory movement, which occurred during the English restoration period. (1660-1686)
- Richard Hooker is known as the father of conservatism, along with Marquess of Halifax, David hume & Edmund Burke. Types of Conservatism
Conservative liberalism- combines liberalism and policies with conservative stance. Fiscal conservatism- the economic philosophy of produce in government spending and debt. Edmund Burke supported this. Libertarian conservatism- Describes certain political ideologies within the United States and Canada which combine libertarian economic issues with the aspects of conservatism. Liberal conservatism- A variant of conservatism that combines conservative values and policies with classical liberal stances. Supported by prime minister Fredrik Reinfeldt. Radicals
-Favored drastic change to extend democracy to all people. They believed they should practice the ideals of the French Revolution liberty, equality, and brotherhood. -Started before the Civil War, referring not to abolitionists but to Northern politicians strongly opposed to the slave power -Majority of them were Whigs. William Seward, Lincoln's secretary of state, was a radical -They were never formally organized and there was movement in and out of the group.
