Marja Liisa Swantz INTRODUCTION Bengt Sundkler, a Swede, was a well-known missiologist and histo­ rian of non-European churches, specialising in African church history. He had served as a missionary in South Africa and Tanzania, and later the northwestem diocese of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania called him to be their first bishop. Bengt Sundkler was a multifaceted person and a true international, long before the era of mass global-isation, which he saw coming in his later years. Bengt Sundkler worked on his autobiography while he was writing his final major work on the history of the Church in Africa. He had various outlines, but reduced the text to an abbreviated version, leaving sorne chapter headings untouched or with only a few pages written. A brief autobiography forms the first part of this volume. In the second part 1 have made use of the earlier outlines which he sent to me in letters. The variety of other sources 1 explain below. Any attempt to portray the lifetime's work of Bengt Sundkler and him as a person will inevitably be one-sided, narrowed down to aspects selected from a specifie view of his personality and career. Firstly, the mate rial and sources available shape the portrait, but the selection is also biased toward my own persona! view of Bengt Sundkler, especially in his later years. As both editor and writer 1 further claim a certain commonality with his approach to scholarship and with his way of experiencing life in general, which 1 discovered first as a student and later as a colleague and friend. Here 1 attempt to describe my understanding of what that commonalty was. 1 direct the searchlight toward what 1 consider to be the keys to understanding Bengt Sundkler's life. This also influences the choice of quotations which form the core of the second part of the biography. Four things oriented Bengt Sundkler in his life decisions: Firstly, to the end of his life he remained a pastor, a shepherd of souls. He was ordained in the Church of Sweden in 1936, a church which he considered to be a bridge church within the Catholic, Universal Church: ecumenicity was the key to his being a pas tor, priest and bishop. Christ was God's Mission into the world and for x Life and Letters of Bengt Sundkler that reason, this Mission was the uniting factor for the Universal Church. This Mission entrusted to God's pilgrim people on earth was integral to the Church. Secondly, Bengt Sundkler could not consider scholarship and history in isolation from people. In the final analysis, people were the actors in history. For him, people's ways of acting, living and think­ ing did not provide data with which he could verify his hypotheses, but rather formed the substance of his scholarship. He not only observed but also participated in the life of the people whose life and history he then wrote about. The leading concept was 'relatedness'. He called this an 'engaged approach' .1 His methodology was grounded in a Participatory World View before anyone bad theorised about participatory research as distinct from participatory observation. Thirdly, Bengt Sundkler was an intense scholar for whom scholar­ ship took precedence over most other concems of life, but his scholarship was closely linked to practicallife experience. Theory and practice were inseparably intertwined. In one of his interviews Bengt simply stated, 'In this miserable life of mine, theology bas been worked out in the context of a living church. '2 This close linking of theory and practice is, to my mind, the key to understanding Bengt Sundkler's theological and scholarly position in general, as a teacher of theology, and in his churchmanship. For this reason, his daily notes are significant for the story of Bengt Sundkler's life and work. Finally, Bengt Sundkler was a creative writer who put into his writings his aesthetic experience of life. He found inspiration in litur­ gical services administered with reverence and devotion; in choral music; in Bach organ and piano recitals; in aesthetic, spiritual and intellectual enjoyment of listening to the radio or watching the televi­ sion (often French television); in walks and bicycle rides; in the beauty of nature and freely shining sun while lying on his balcon y, which he called his 'Tenerife'.

Artikeln publiceras i två delar. Biskopsvalet i Luleå 1965 Den 8 juli 1965, några dagar efter min fyrtioårsdag överraskades jag av att möta mitt eget dystra anlete på Svenska Dagbladets första sida. Bredvid mig log domprosten Stig Hellsten med hela sitt glada ansikte. Det handlade om biskopsvalet i Luleå efter Ivar Hylander. Tidningen utlovade med sedvanlig journalistisk dramatik, att det skulle bli en »hård match» mellan den »folkkyrklige» Hellsten och mig, som lanserades som »de högkyrkligas» kandidat. Dessa hade givit upp hoppet att få Gustaf Adolf Danell utnämnd sedan han åtta gånger hade refuserats av de politiska makthavarna. Tidningen meddelade, att jag skulle ha omkring 2/3 av stiftets präster bakom mig. En annan tidning hade rubriken »Rundkragar och lågkyrkliga slåss om Luleås biskopsstol». Situationen komplicerades av att det var första gången som den nya biskopsvalslagen tillämpades, vilket innebar att de prästerliga rösterna balanserades av lika många lekmannaröster, vilket gav tillfälle till stora överraskningar. Men för min del hade en tjugoårig biskopsvalscirkus tagit sin stillsamma början. Det visade sig snart, att SvD hade felbedömt opinionsläget under de nya förutsättningarna. Något »slagsmål» blev det aldrig. Provvalen och den allt livligare debatten förpassade mig ganska omgående till den s.k. »avbytarbänken», vilket jag var förberedd på och inte hade något emot. På förslaget uppfördes Stig Hellsten, Olaus Brännström och Per-Olof Sjögren, närmast följda av Karl-Gunnar Grape, mig själv och Ebbe Arvidsson.

MARCHANT Section VI After the wide-ranging symposium of the articles in the previous five sections, the final three essays of Section VI face a question both elusive and challenging. What is Anglicanism, that we have been surveying in all its breadth and length? The question might be regarded as exhibiting those anxiety traits that have caused almost all institutions, assumptions and principles-social, moral or religious-to be re-examined rigorously during the post-war decades. Anyone actually flying in a plane, while perhaps wondering whether the wings will stay on, is hardly likely to ask whether it is working correctly to aerodynamic principles. The nagging introspective enquiry that keeps surfacing in these three last articles is, however, of this order: not whether Anglicanism is wise or right in this or that; nor what might be new approaches, formulations, realignments, growth points or other developmental themes. These of course are there. But the real matter that underlies the three is: What is peculiar, native, identifying, about Anglican churchmanship, now that it has spread beyond the Anglo­ Saxon, British racial origins to embrace great provinces of Asian, African and South American peoples? It is more explicit in the first of the three articles, 'On Being Anglican', by Bishop Stephen Neill; and it is obviously haunting the third by Bishop John Howe, the Secretary-General of the Anglican Consultative Council (ACC) in his 'Anglican Patterns'; but it is also iJnplicit in the discussion by Bishop Oliver Tomkins in the second, 'Anglican Christianity and Ecumenism'.

    The Anglo-Catholic Tradition in Australian Anglicanism Dr David Hilliard Reader in History, Flinders University Adelaide, Australia Anglicanism in Australia has had many Anglo-Catholics but no single version of Anglo-Catholicism.1 Anglo-Catholics have comprised neither a church nor a sect, nor have they been a tightly organised party. Within a framework of common ideas about the apostolic succession, the sacraments and the central role of ‘the Church’ in mediating salvation, they were, and remain, diverse in outlook, with few organs or institutions to link them together and to promote common goals. Since the mid-nineteenth century, in Australia as in England, two very different trends in the movement can be identified. The Revd Mattijs Ploeger, M.A, studied at the Theological Faculty of Leiden University and the Old Catholic Seminary at Utrecht University (the Netherlands). Additionally he spent five months at the Anglican theological college Westcott House, Cambridge (United Kingdom), where the present text was written. In 1999 he was ordained to the diaconate and the presbyterate in the Old Catholic diocese of Haarlem (the Netherlands), where he serves as a parish priest. Fr Matt is a member of several ecumenical liturgical organisations in the Netherlands and is preparing a dissertation on liturgical/eucharistic ecclesiology at Utrecht University. He has published articles in the Dutch liturgical journal Eredienstvaardig and in the Old Catholic theological quarterly Internationale Kirchliche Zeitschrift.     21st Conference of the International Lutheran Council Berlin, Germany August 27 – September 2, 2005 The Formula of Concord as a Model for Discourse in the Church Robert Kolb The appellation „Formula of Concord“ has designated the last of the symbolic or confessional writings of the Lutheran church almost from the time of its composition. This document was indeed a formulation aimed at bringing harmony to strife-ridden churches in the search for a proper expression of the faith that Luther had proclaimed and his colleagues and followers had confessed as a liberating message for both church and society fifty years earlier. This document is a formula, a written document that gives not even the slightest hint that it should be conveyed to human ears instead of human eyes. The Augsburg Confession had been written to be read: to the emperor, to the estates of the German nation, to the waiting crowds outside the hall of the diet in Augsburg. The Apology of the Augsburg Confession, it is quite clear from recent research,1 followed the oral form of judicial argument as Melanchthon presented his case for the Lutheran confession to a mythically yet neutral emperor; the Apology was created at the yet not carefully defined border between oral and written cultures. The Large Catechism reads like the sermons from which it was composed, and the Small Catechism reminds every reader that it was written to be recited and repeated aloud. The Formula of Concord as a „Binding Summary“ of Christian Teaching In contrast, the „Formula of Concord“ is written for readers, a carefully- crafted formulation for the theologians and educated lay people of German Lutheran churches to ponder and study.
