Rubin Department of Engineering and Public Policy Carnegie Mellon University Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Presentation to the 2011 AIChE Spring Meeting, Chicago, IL March 13-17, 2011 Background • Post-combustion carbon capture and storage (CCS) has been considered a key technology for deeply reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from existing and new coal-fired power plants. • Membranes have been used commercially for industrial gas separation, and have the potential for application to power plant flue gases. • Membrane systems are among the advanced technologies being developed for more cost-effective CO2 capture. 2 1 Postcombustion Membrane Capture Systems for Coal-fired Power Plants Recycling Residue from 2nd Stage C 1st Stage Feed Residue C 2nd Stage Permeate To Storage 3 Research Objective • The objective of this study is to evaluate the technical feasibility and cost of polymeric membrane systems for CO2 capture at coal-fired pow er pl ant s. M or e specifi call y, ¾To investigate the performance (e.g. membrane system size and energy penalty) and cost of different capture system configurations (e.g. single- and multiple-stage modules) to identify feasible membrane systems that are able to simultaneously achieve 90% CO2 capture and above 95% purity of CO2 product; and ¾To examine a range of key factors affecting the capture system perfdtformance and cost. 4 2 Membrane Gas Separation Basics • The driving force for membrane gas separation is the partial pressure difference of a gas component between the feed and permeate sides. However, the distinction between gas-liquid solubility and vapor-liquid equilibrium is often not so clear. Since the first industrial installations for hydrogen separation in the early eighties, significant improvements in membrane quality have been achieved in air separation as well as in CO2 separation. However, beside the improvement in the materials as well as in membrane module design, an important point is represented by a correct engineering of these separation processes. The recovery of high value co-products from different industrial streams (e.g. organic vapours from off-gas streams, helium from natural gas) is an interesting application, which created a new market for gas separation membranes, coupling environmental and economic benefits.     Chapter 1 – Dissolved Oxygen in the Blood Say we have a volume of blood, which we’ll represent as a beaker of fluid. Now let’s include oxygen in the gas above the blood (represented by the green circles). The oxygen exerts a certain amount of partial pressure, which is a measure of the concentration of oxygen in the gas (represented by the pink arrows). This pressure causes some of the oxygen to become dissolved in the blood. If we raise the concentration of oxygen in the gas, it will have a higher partial pressure, and consequently more oxygen will become dissolved in the blood. Keep in mind that what we are describing is a dynamic process, with oxygen coming in and out of the blood all the time, in order to maintain a certain concentration of dissolved oxygen. This is known as a) low partial pressure of oxygen b) high partial pressure of oxygen dynamic equilibrium. As you might expect, lowering the oxygen concentration in the gas would lower its partial pressure and a new equilibrium would be established with a lower dissolved oxygen concentration. In fact, the concentration of DISSOLVED oxygen in the blood (the CdO2) is directly proportional to the partial pressure of oxygen (the PO2) in the gas. This is known as Henry's Law. In this study, membranes were fabricated from polysulfone (PSf) containing magnesium oxide (MgO) nanoparticles and gas permeation properties of the resulting membranes were investigated. Membranes were prepared by solution blending and phase inversion methods. Morphology of the membranes, void formations, MgO distribution and aggregates were observed by SEM analysis. Furthermore, thermal stability, residual solvent in the membrane film and structural ruination of membranes were analyzed by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). The effects of MgO nanoparticles on the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the prepared nanocomposites were studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The Tg of nanocomposite membranes increased with MgO loading. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra of nanocomposite membranes were analyzed to identify the variations of the bonds. The results obtained from gas permeation experiments with a constant pressure setup showed that adding MgO nanoparticles to the polymeric membrane structure increased the permeability of the membranes. At 30 wt% -16 -16 2 MgO loading, the CO2 permeability was enhanced from 25.75×10 to 47.12×10 mol.m/(m .s.Pa) and the CO2/CH4 selectivity decreased from 30.84 to 25.65 when compared with pure PSf.
