Her closest competitor, Sara Schuler, is 66 points behind. The XTERRA America Tour is designed to provide age group athletes with a bona-fide championship to compete for within their geographic region. At the end of the regular season the top performers in each of eight regions are invited to compete against other athletes their same age - but from different regions - at the national championship in Utah on September 19 This year there are 70 races in 39 states across the country, as well as the U.S. Territory of Guam and Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (Saipan). It marks the 19th straight year of expansion for XTERRA.

Here's how the Series works: 1) CHOOSE REGION: There are 8 regions, determined by a competitor's primary residence at the time of their first race:

NORTHEAST (NE) - Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, ATLANTIC (AT) - Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Washington D.C. SOUTHEAST (SE) - Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands. MIDWEST (MW) - Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky. SOUTHCENTRAL (SC) - Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas. MOUNTAIN (MT) - Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Colorado, Utah, Wyoming. NORTHWEST (NW) - Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Alaska. WEST (W) - California, Nevada, Arizona, Hawaii, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Pacific Territories.

2) DETERMINE YOUR DIVISION/AGE GROUP: "XTERRA Age" is based on a competitor's age on December 31, 2013. Athletes compete in the following age categories: 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65+ (w), 65-69 (m), 70-74 (m), and 75+ (m), and we also have Physically Challenged Divisions.

Physically Challenged Division: There are two physically challenged age groups, 15-39 and 40+, and 6 categories: Below the knee amputee, above the knee amputee, below the elbow amputee, above the elbow amputee, blind and impaired/les autres.

3) RACE AND SCORE: Series competitors race for points at their choice of 70 events - including XTERRA Points Series (XPS) races & XTERRA Championship Series (XCS) races. Competitors can enter as many events as they'd like and their best four finishes count towards their total points score. Competitors are required to race in at least one event in their region, and must COUNT two events in their region. Note: You don’t have to race in two, but you have to count two in your region. Bottom line, to play the game (to qualify for nationals and win a regional championship) you have to race in at least one event in your region, and everything more than that is gravy and increases your chances of winning.

4) COUNT ‘EM UP: Points are awarded to the top 15 finishers in each age group at each race. Athletes can earn more points at XCS races because, generally, participation is higher and the courses are tougher. If an athlete races at more than one XCS event, only the best finish counts at full points. Any other finishes earn points at the same rate as an XPS race. There are two points systems: 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th 7th 8th 9th 10th 11th 12th 13th 14th 15th XTERRA Championship Series Races: 100 90 82 75 69 63 58 53 49 45 41 37 34 31 28 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th 7th 8th 9th 10th 11th 12th 13th 14th 15th XTERRA Points Series Races: 75 67 61 56 51 47 43 39 36 33 30 27 25 23 21

32 HOW THE XTERRA AMERICA TOUR WORKS CONTINUED...

5) BECOMING A REGIONAL CHAMP: At the end of the regular season in late August, the athlete with the most points - by gender, by division, by region - earns the title of XTERRA Regional Champion. All regional champions and those that finish in the top 15 of their division at any XTERRA Points Series race qualify to compete in the USA Championship. And then comes the showdown! Win in Utah, and you are the XTERRA National Age Group Champion.

Note: All XTERRA America Tour events are sanctioned by All the technical details on How the Series Works USA Triathlon, the national governing body of multisport in can be found online at xterraplanet.com the United States. As such all athletes are subject to the rules and regulations set forth by the USAT. Details available at usatriathlon.org.

The XTERRA Points Series races are a collection of independently produced off-road triathlons owned and operated by local promoters, while the Championship Series events are bigger races with pro purses on full-length courses operated by the TEAM Unlimited / XTERRA staff.

Sunday, Sept. 30, 2007 – Both Stoltz and Whitmore reclaimed the XTERRA titles that slipped away from them in 2006 when Stoltz (who won this race in 2001, ’02 and ’03) broke his back and wrist pre-riding and Whitmore (who won four straight from 2002-05) suffered through a series of flats that left her out of the title chase. Stoltz and Whitmore finished with perfect 400-point scores in the five-stop XTERRA U.S. Pro Series and thus earned $19,000 for their efforts ($14,000 for winning the Series and $5,000 for winning the race).

57 XTERRA TRAIL RUN NATIONALS PREVIEW

The reigning XTERRA Trail Run National Champion Brett Hales from Layton, Utah is returning to defend his half- marathon national title at Snowbasin Resort on September Hales 20th, but will be up against fierce competition in the form of familiar foe and two-time XTERRA Trail Running World Champion Patrick Smyth of Salt Lake City.

“Pat is a fierce competitor and a great tactical runner,” said Hales, a former track and cross country stand-out at nearby Weber State University. “He knows what his strengths and weaknesses are so he capitalizes when and where he can.”

Smyth, who won the 2013 XTERRA National Title in Utah, was equally complimentary of Hales.

“I’ll have my hands plenty full with Brett running,” said Smyth, himself a former standout cross country runner at the University of Notre Dame before turning his sights to trail running and becoming one of America’s best. “I'm psy- ched about returning to XTERRA Nationals! It doesn't get much better then Snowbasin in late September for trail run- ning, and I'm looking forward to regaining my U.S. National title and get some good momentum going into Worlds in Hawaii!"

Hales is equally excited and echoes what Smyth said about the course at Snowbasin truly being the star.

“After last year’s XTERRA National Championship I was made a trail run fan for life,” said Hales, who did his first- ever trail race at Snowbasin last year almost on a whim.

“The euphoria that followed that race was awesome and I'm looking forward to racing hard and running through the heavens once again. I must say that the Snowbasin venue is perfect for the event. The trails are well-groomed and set for speed and the two separate vertical climbs challenge even the more experienced trail guys.”

Hales and Smyth aren’t the only stars to join the line-up at the XTERRA Trail Run National Championship, as the reigning women’s champion Liz Stephen, a two-time Olympic cross country skier, is also set to return.

“It was a really fun race and his is a really fun course,” said Stephen after last year’s race. “Falling leaves and 58 XTERRA TRAIL RUN NATIONALS PREVIEW spectators all around, I really love running at Snowbasin and XTERRA always does such a good job with the organ- ization.” Stephen

Shortly after the fast start in the parking lot, runners will be immediately challenged by a long climb up the mountain. The trails at this point will consist mostly of dirt fire roads that gradually take athletes to the top of the mountain. The terrain along the initial climb isn’t too technical and most of the trails are relatively wide. As you run along the arête near the summit, you’ll experience more technical running with an abundance of rocks and narrower trails.

“Once you’ve ascended the summit, stunning panoramic views allow you to take in the natural beauty that surrounds Snowbasin. You’ll be able to see for endless miles out into the valley, which will provide a breathtaking backdrop of the fall foliage and crystal clear blue skies. After running along the upper ridges for a couple of miles, you’ll descend the mountain on a long switchback ski trail that will provide an adrenaline pumping experience.
