NEW ZEALAND freestyle kayaking representative Daryl Bayly training on the Kaituna River, out of Lake Rotoiti. Photo supplied By Colin Thorsen Te Awamutu College old boy Daryl Bayly is making good in the outrageously challenging sport of freestyle kayaking. The 23-year-old fl ew out for Sydney on Tuesday with his New Zealand team-mates to compete in the world championships at Penrith. The January 26-30 event is being held on the same man-made course as that used for freestyle kayaking at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Bayly will have plenty of support across the Tasman. His parents Trevor and Bev, brothers Brendan and Jared, and grandparents Murray and June Higham (all of Te Awamutu) will be in attend- ance. The New Zealand senior men, senior women, junior men and junior women teams were named following trials on the Fuljames Rapids (Waikato River) and Kaituna Rapids (Kaituna River). Bayly placed fi fth in the trials to make the fi ve- strong senior men’s team. After watching the sport fi rst-hand, Trevor Bayly says freestyle kayaking is certainly not for the faint-hearted. Competitors are required to perform as many tricks as possible, including kart-wheels, loops and front slips (in a given time) on fast-fl owing ‘play waves’. The stretch of water above the notoriously dan- gerous Huka Falls is a favoured spot for training - in the evening when the river is at its lowest and least dangerous level. One of the fi rst people Bayly phoned after being named in the New Zealand team was Te Awamutu College head of PE and Outdoor Edu- cation, Brett Leong. Bayly was introduced to white water kayaking on an Outdoor Education course, led by Beverly Barnes and Leong, as a Year 12 (sixth form) stu- dent at Te Awamutu College in 1998. Leong recalls Bayly excelling in white water kayaking. “He seemed to pick up rolling a kayak and read- ing a river quite quickly. “From then on he had the bug.” In his fi rst year out of school in 2000, Bayly enrolled for a certifi cate in Outdoor Recreation at Tai Poutini Polytehnic (Greymouth). The course covered a range of outdoor adven- ture codes including white water rafting, white water kayaking, sea kayaking, rock climbing, fi rst aid, weather interpretation in the outdoors, risk management, catering, bush craft, and off-track navigation.
