As for Kia Magic in 2014! We have watched and enjoyed the rise in mana and respect for that squad. Written off at the start, they just missed out on a place in the ANZ Championship Grand Final. The coaches, Julie Fitzgerald and Margaret Forsyth, the captain and vice captain, and , together with the whole squad plus support staff, must be commended for playing in a manner that made us proud and was steeped in high performance. The brand of netball they played, the spirit they showed and the determination never to take a step backwards (even though they were on average the youngest squad in the competition) is a

4 KIA Magic

The 2014 season heralded significant change for the Kia Magic, with ANZ Championship winning coach Julie Fitzgerald replacing the departed Noelene Taurua. On the court there was also a new look squad for the season, with no fewer than nine new players. Although the departure of legendary Kia Magic players and naturally caused some doubt among media and fans, quality recruitment including players with Silver Fern experience and an English Rose, ensured the squad entered the season with the ability and belief to continue the franchise’s proud history of post-season appearances. The team clicked immediately and began the season with an outstanding five from five record. Three of these games were on the road and included a 49-44 away win over the much fancied Vixens, who would eventually go on to claim the title. A bolstered Pulse side then handed the Kia Magic their first loss, but they quickly rebounded with impressive wins over the Mystics and a nail-biting 50-49 win over the defending champion Thunderbirds. The Thunderbirds match also doubled as the 100th ANZ Championship appearance for inspirational captain Casey Kopua, all for the Kia Magic, and added further cause for celebration. Next up, the Pulse would again prove a stumbling block, going down in the return leg against the capital based franchise. This sparked a slight slump in form, with wins at the back end of the regular season hard to come by. Despite losing four of their last five games, the Kia Magic had done enough through the early part of the season to secure a play-off spot though, rounding out the regular season with an eight win, five loss record. The final regular season game was a narrow four-goal defeat to the powerful Firebirds line-up and gave the Kia Magic belief that they could enter the post-season with confidence and cause an upset on Australian soil, against the Swifts in the minor semi-final. The game was a tense and pulsating encounter and came down to the final seconds, where Jo Harten held her nerve to put the Kia Magic ahead by one as the clock expired, for an epic 50-49 victory. This qualified the team for the preliminary final and another Australian team – the Firebirds. Winning consecutive play-off games against tough Australian opponents in unfortunately proved a step too far for the Kia Magic. As they had done just a couple of weeks earlier, the Firebirds held on for a four-goal victory and earned the right to contest the ANZ Championship final. However, the Kia Magic could reflect on another successful season, again enjoying the tag of best performed New Zealand franchise, despite being the first year under a new coach and a largely new team. As a mark of the team’s success, Jo Harten was jointly awarded the ANZ Championship MVP title, while inspirational captain Casey Kopua was selected in the ANZ Championship tournament team and coach Julie Fitzgerald was named ANZ Championship Coach of the Year.
