Looking for new business ideas, they decided to stick to the well known material – glass – but this time they focused on its application in architecture. Q4Glass deals with processing of glass for the construction industry. Production is always tailored for a specific project. The company operates in the Słupsk Special Economic Zone. It has built a 6,000 square metres production plant, with its own design of production lines layout. Using EU funding, the company has invested over PLN 55 million in modernization of technologies. Meanwhile, the plant expanded its area to 12,000 square metres, and the initial number of 45 employees has risen to 160. 55% of revenue generated by the company comes from exports. Completed projects can be seen in Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Switzerland and the UK. Espersen came to Koszalin in the early 1990s, when the group's first Polish factory was established here. Over the 25 years of its operations in Koszalin, Espersen has expanded significantly, and now three of the group's subsidiaries operate here. Espersen's most recent acquisition is the former Royal Greenland plant in Koszalin, which became part of Espersen Group in 2017 under a contract between the two major players in the fish and seafood processing industry. The acquisition of the plant is an important milestone in the development of Espersen, and will have a significant impact on the Group's operations in the coming years. HIGH TECHNOLOGIES INDUSTRIAL PARK IN STARGARD Located in Stargard at a former airfield site. Under the Regional Operational Programme for Zachodniopomorskie Voivodeship and the Smart Growth Operational Programme for 2014-2020, entrepreneurs and scientists can receive funding for their research and development activities. The University was established in 2009 by a merger of the Szczecin University of Technology and the Agricultural Academy in Szczecin. It offers over 45 courses in natural science, technical science and economics. It has new laboratories and well-developed research infrastructure. The University cooperates with numerous companies, such as Hewlett- Packard, Siemens, Unizeto (currently Asseco Data Systems), ERBUD, Azoty Group or Faurecia. Representatives of companies take part in the development of curricula, and are members of faculty boards. The West Pomeranian University of Technology was the first in Poland to sign an agreement with Samsung under the Samsung LABO project, aimed at running specialized training courses for students. Research and development work is carried out at 10 faculties, in the Centre for Bioimmobilisation and Innovative Packaging Materials and the Centre for Nanotechnology Research and Education. Numerous projects are run in cooperation with companies under consortia. It has qualified staff and specialized equipment allowing for research, analysis, diagnostics, measurements, training or consulting. Research and development projects are run at faculties as well as laboratories and research centres, such as eLBRUS, specializing in research in various fields of physics. Areas of research include the development of new, alternative energy sources, or finding solutions for radioactive waste disposal. At eLBRUS laboratories, research is also carried out in nanotechnology and physics of polymers and biopolymers. In turn, the Structural and Functional Human Research Centre is one of best-equipped facilities running scientific research in physical education, sports and sports medicine. The Maritime University of Szczecin is a public technical university supervised by the Ministry of Maritime Economy and Inland Navigation. Its three faculties provide education to highly qualified maritime staff: navigators and mechanics, as well as staff for shipowner and port services. The Maritime University of Szczecin is active in bringing science and business together. In order to streamline these relationships, the Centre for Maritime Technology Transfer (CTTM) was established, with responsibilities including patent protection of technologies. The Maritime University Innovation Centre (CIAM) is a company implementing these technologies in business. The University takes part in international consortia projects, also with other scientific institutions. Research and development projects are implemented under the Horizon 2020, Interreg and ERA-NET Transport programmes. There are ongoing research projects in maritime safety, LNG, sustainable transport or electromobility. The Maritime University grants licences for their inventions. Based on one of them, a spin-off company was established under the name Sup4Nav, and its NAVDEC product has been successfully implemented in practice – recently installed on Polferries ferries. POMERANIAN 4,500 732 MEDICAL students lecturers UNIVERSITY

The Pomeranian Medical University in Szczecin runs 1 programmes for students from Poland and abroad, including courses in English. Its academic staff of 700 is active in research and development work. The best-known academics include Prof. Jan Lubiński (whose team was the first in the world to demonstrate that propensity for cancer is hereditary) and Prof. Bogusław Machaliński (research on stem cells). The former has established a company dealing with commercialization of cancer detection, prevention and treatment methods). The cooperation between researchers and entrepreneurs is coordinated by the PMU's Technology Transfer Centre, whose tasks also include the promotion of the University's intellectual potential and facilitating knowledge and technology transfer from the academia to the industry. Research carried out by PMU's scientists is used in various industries beyond medicine, such as cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. The University provides education to students with 25 programmes in technical sciences, economics, arts and humanities. It also closely cooperates with the business world. Its partners include the American company Haas, Energa Operator, Satel, Plasmet and Nuvarro. Cooperation with the former led to the establishment of Haas Technical Education Centre, a modern CNC machining laboratory. In 2016, thanks to cooperation with Kronospan, the University established the Faculty of Wood Industry in Szczecinek, with a unique programme in Engineering and Automation in Wood Industry. Scientists of the University are also active participants of research and development consortia with other scientific institutions and industry representatives, such as KGHM Polska Miedź, Kompania Węglowa, power plants, Alstom Power or Siemens. Special Inclusion Zone in West Pomerania Covers areas with a lower economic potential, currently including 66 municipalities in the central and eastern part of the region. In order to provide an economic and social boost to those areas, under the Regional Operational Programme a tool for support of SMEs has been developed, focused mainly on creating new, long- term jobs and improving the competitiveness of micro-, small and medium-sized enterprises.
