Do you hear me? Handbook for violin contemporary music notation by Dejana Sekulić Author’s Note: This might be a work with no end, as it is almost impossible to think of there could be an end of this research, and of this essay. Every new sign, sonority, color, timbre... experience in reading and playing becomes additional material. With (almost) each new piece, there will be new additions, especially to the segment “Notation: see me-hear me-make me”. It is, as well, very likely that new chapters will arise, both on left and right hand technique, as well as marks on other sonority and timbre remarks. This publication captures this research at this point in time, and should not be considered as the ultimate statement, but the base on which the future findings will be added on. • A Guide to Forgotten String Quartets
SECOND EDITION A Guide to Forgotten String Quartets Exploring unjustly neglected masterpieces An eBook by Lyle Chan published by Vexations840 a mysterious organization dedicated to classical music at its finest Second Edition, February 2013 © 2013 Vexations840 Pty Ltd PO Box 309, Edgecliff NSW 2027, Australia [email protected] you will enjoy visiting www.forgottenstringquartets.com 2 Introduction to the Second Edition As we stated in our First Edition, A Guide to Forgotten String Quartets was intended to take advantage of the swiftness of e-publishing and be revised quickly towards a second and subsequent editions. This Second Edition is the result of the very encouraging emails we’ve received. Most of your emails have been simply about how much you’ve enjoyed the coverage and found the eBook useful. Some of you have also brought additional works to our attention, many of which we’ve included here. This new edition adds another 10 quartets which amounts to nearly 3 hours of listening time. We’ve chosen a balance of little-known works by famous composers like Samuel Barber, Kurt Weill, Franz Liszt, Beethoven (yes, even this titan of a composer has neglected works) as well as composers whose entire output, not just their string quartets, is largely forgotten, such as Chevalier de Saint-George and Malipiero. And one of the new quartets is in fact a multicomposer suite of 16 movements from Russia called Les Vendredis, certainly one of the most interesting discoveries we’ve made. Since the First Edition, the internet app called Spotify has been widely adopted by the classical music community and so we have begun to include Spotify listening links – we’ll start with new works being added to this Second Edition, and retrospectively add links for the rest.

  • SEPTEMBER 2013 LIST Gramophone Award Winners
tel 0115 982 7500 fax 0115 982 7020 SEPTEMBER 2013 LIST See inside for valid dates Dear Customer Many of you may have read about this year’s nominations for the Gramophone Awards already. They are being run slightly differently this time, in that the category winners have actually been announced a month before the ceremony itself. These winners are all detailed on the back page (available at special prices) and it will be exciting to see which one is finally announced as Record of the Year on 17th September. It is one of the few classical awards that really does affect sales in a big way for the lucky winner, so good luck to all those included! Now that summer is nearly over, we are pleased to be able to present you with a real bumper crop of new releases this month. We have actually managed to fill p.2-4 with our ‘Priority Releases’, and even so, still had to make some tough decisions with what not to include. Highlights include the new Verdi album from Pappano (Warner, previously EMI), a brilliant recital entitled ‘Arias for Caffarelli’ (Naive) and the latest Wagner from Gergiev (Mariinsky) in the form of Das Rheingold (perhaps a little less divisive than the earlier Die Walkure recording). Bargain boxes include a wonderful Berlin Phil set from DG celebrating a 100 year relationship with the label, a very limited Baroque Opera set from Harmonia Mundi and some mouthwatering ‘complete’ sets from Sony, featuring Reiner, Graffman and Horowitz. Large catalogue special offers this month include Naive (well worth exploring and a little under-rated, we feel), Berlin Classics and Profil.
