chapter � Introduction Ethnicity does not matter in the long-term perspective. Such was the conclu- sion formulated by a new generation of ‘Africanists’ in the 1970s and 1980s, and it was a kind of scientific revolution. Its defenders held that in sub-Saharan Africa, ethnicity had mainly been created through European colonial rule, and was, therefore, an entirely artificial concept.1 For a period that roughly coin- cides with the 15 years between 1975 and 1990, the attack against the well- established idea of primordial ethnic groups in Africa – which had dominated anthropological thought from the colonial period onwards – seemed to win the day.2 In spite of Eric Hobsbawm and Terence Ranger’s initiative to under- stand the ‘invention of tradition’ with a view to identifying the creation of group sentiment in a comparative and global approach, however, reflections of historians working on group identity in the African continent have rarely entered the debates on global history.3 While migration and connection – for example, over the Atlantic or the Indian Ocean – are essential themes in global historical studies, they do not yet interact with the analysis of ethnicity that 1 This is neatly summarised in Amselle, Jean-Loup, ‘Ethnies et espaces: pour une anthropolo- gie topologique’, in Jean-Loup Amselle and Elikia M’Bokolo (eds.), Au cœur de l’ethnie: ethnies, tribalisme et État en Afrique (Paris: La Découverte, 1985), 11–48, 23 (‘La cause paraît donc entendue: il n’existait rien qui ressemblât à une ethnie pendant la période précoloniale’). -

1 2 3 4 5 Legacies of British Colonial Violence: 6 7 Viewing Kenyan Detention Camps through 8 9 the Hanslope Disclosure 10 11 12 13 Q1 AOIFE DUFFY 14 15 A number of works have recently been published that seek to re-narrate co- 16 lonial histories, with a particular emphasis on the role of law in at once 17 Q2 creating and marginalizing colonial subjects.1 Focusing on mid-twentieth 18 century detention camps in the British colony of Kenya, this article illumi- 19 nates a colonial history that was deeply buried in a Foreign and 20 Commonwealth Office (FCO) building for many years. As such, the anal- 21 ysis supports the revelatory work of David Anderson and Caroline Elkins, 22 who highlighted the violence that underpinned British detention and inter- 23 rogation practises in Kenya.2 In particular, the article explores recently 24 25 26 1. Abstract Due to the advent of the 1994 democratic constitution particularly its enactment on Protection of human rights and freedoms: Culture and language, Freedom of association, Religion and beliefs, Freedom of assembly and Political rights, Malawi has witnessed mushrooming of tribal organizations, aiming at preserving the traditional African religious beliefs and African cultural traditions. The Chewa Heritage Foundation (Chefo) and the Muhlakho wa Alhomwe (MWA) among the Chewa and Lhomwe tribes respectively are among well-known ethnic organizations through which the traditional beliefs, cultural traditions and religions are enjoying a significant respect from members of mentioned-tribes. The democratic constitution has cleared a road for the establishment of these ethnic organizations. However, it seems activities of Chefo and MWA are inter alia promoting tribalism and nepotism, in addition to being used as campaign tools for some political parties. This article intends to assess and evaluate the role and the impact of the Chefo and MWA on preservation of good cultural practices and constitutional democracy in Malawi. The hypothesis is, in spite of preserving cultural practices as guaranteed in constitution, the tribal organizations need to be watchful so that they should not promote tribalism, nepotism and being used as campaign tools by Malawian politicians. 1. Introduction In order to appreciate how in their understanding the Democratic Constitution the Chewa Heritage Foundation and Mulhako wa Alhomwe in Malawi, revitalize, preserved and protect customs, values, beliefs and traditional practices it is necessary to understand a social- political history of Malawi. -

Abstract This thesis resituates the Community Development programme as the key social intervention attempted by the British Colonial Office in Africa in the late 1940s and early 1950s. A preference for planning, growing confidence in metropolitan intervention, and the gradualist determination of Fabian socialist politicians and experts resulted in a programme that stressed modernity, progressive individualism, initiative, cooperative communities and a new type of responsible citizenship. Eventual self-rule would be well-served by this new contract between colonial administrations and African citizens. -

MAU MAU IN NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL CONSCIOUSNESS By Macharia Munene Introductory Remarks It is possible to look at Mau Mau consciousness in terms of two overlapping phases of the Colonial and Post-colonial periods, represented by seminal publications which show the power of books to shape thinking and public consciousness. In the colonial period were Jomo Kenyatta’s 1938 Facing Mount Kenya, the Corfield Report in 1960. In the Post-Colonial period were John Nottingham’s The Myth of Mau Mau soon after independence, and Caroline Elkins’ 2005 Imperial Reckoning/Britain’s Gulag. Each represents a phase of consciousness with regard to the Mau Mau War and can be divided into the following segments: a. The Colonial Setting b. The shock of the Mau Mau War outbreak c. The attempted destruction of Mau Mau Consciousness d. Post-colonial ignoring or effort to rearrange Mau Mau Consciousness e. Limited revival of Consciousness The Attraction The attraction to Mau Mau consciousness is partly because there probably was no challenge to the European colonial state in Africa that captured as much global attention as the Mau Mau War in Kenya against the British and the Algerian War against the French.1 The Mau Mau War was bitter and the benefits did not always accrue to those who bore the brunt of the war.2 A few fighters benefited, but the rest appear to have been neglected. In contrast, those who had opposed the war or supported British colonialists seemingly benefited most, continue to benefit, and a feeling of betrayal cropped up that is often the subject of many debates. -

RESEARCH ASSOCIATION for RAIS INTERDISCIPLINARY APRIL 2019 STUDIES DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.2651347 “White Terror and Ghosts of Kenya”: Postcolonial, Socio-Political Imagery and Narratives of Kenyan Diasporas Radoli Lydia Ouma Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg, Germany, [email protected] ABSTRACT: “White Terror” (2013), a BBC documentary details colonial atrocities in Kenya and thereafter state of emergency. I argue, ghosts (memories) of the atrocities still haunt a few remaining colonial survivors. Socio-political colonial structures were inherited in post-independence Kenya. The documentary based on Harvard’s History Professor Caroline Elkins (2005) research was evidenced in a legal suit of five colonial survivors against the British government for torture. Post-2007 ethno-political conflicts in Kenya can be linked to misappropriations in the 1954 Swynerton land tenure reforms. British occupation of native land sparked an insurgency that resulted in a state emergency (1952-1960), and later turned into struggle for independence. To Kenyans, Mau Mau (largely Kikuyus) were freedom fighters, but inhuman savage terrorists to colonial agents. Geographical annexing of land placed the Kikuyu, a dominant ethnic group close to the colonial capital, while the rest of the tribes were disbursed in the peripheries. In postcolonial Kenya, political and economic disparities herald power struggles between dominant ethnicities, in the case of Kenya; Kikuyu, Luo and Kalenjin. Postcolonial theory was a result of colonial experience, “the testimonies of the third world countries and discourses of minorities within geographical and political divisions of “East and West”, “North and South” (Bhabha 1994). First generational Kenyans survived colonialism, but retain narratives of the struggle over colonial domination. -

It employs several themes and case studies as filters for the vast body of information that constitutes African Social History from the colonial times to the present. It is concerned with both the historical forces which have shaped Africans’ everyday life and the ways in which Africans’ agency has shaped and reshaped the making of their own histories. At a meeting of the FACULTY OF ARTS AND SCIENCES on April 11, 2000, the following tribute to the life and service of the late H. Leroy Vail was spread upon the permanent records of the Faculty. H. LEROY VAIL BORN: August 5, 1940 DIED: March 27, 1999 Hazen Leroy Vail was born in Boston, August 5, 1940. His father, Hazen Claude Vail, who had left a Depression-broken small farm in Belleisle, New Brunswick, to seek his fortune here, was a Metropolitan Life Insurance Company salesman. Leroy's mother, Mary Teresa MacLean Vail, come as a girl with her family from Cape Breton Island to Boston, had worked at Harvard, as a maid at the new Kirkland House. In 1943 the Vails had another son, David. Growing up in Allston, Leroy attended the old Washington and Andrew Jackson public schools. His teachers told his parents he was very bright, and should become a teacher. For his high grades and entrance examination scores, he was in 1952 admitted to the Boston Latin School, and in 1958 graduated, honored for his grades and "exemplary conduct and fidelity." He then entered Boston College, in Classics, but thanks to a sophomore course on medieval Europe turned to History, and in 1962, a big, burly, ruddy boy, impeccable in manner, reserved, but exuberant over Wagner and Mahler, graduated magna cum laude in History. On his B.C. mentor's advice, Vail proceeded to graduate school at the University of Wisconsin to study British imperial history under Philip Curtin. But he quickly found the most intellectual excitement in Curtin's and Jan Vansina's new "comparative tropical history" program ("Compswamp"), and plunged into the booming fields of African history and historical linguistics with these two pioneering scholars for his teachers.
