anrhrfitrrManchester — A City ol Village Charm Hrralft Saturday. Aug. 29.1987 LOYALISTS CRUSH COUP Philippine rebels eppeared to have little support MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Loyal troops backed by helicopter gunships and low-level bombing seized strongholds of mutineers Friday to crush the bloodiest coup attempt yet against President Corazon Aquino. Her only son was wounded. On Saturday morning, 500 rebel troops surrendered at Camp Aguinaldo, the military headquarters that was the scene of the heaviest fighting, themilitary said. On Friday night, it said other 402 rebels had been captured. Gen. Fidel V. Ramos, the military chief of staff, had told his subordinates Friday morning that only about 800 troops had taken part in the mutiny. It was not known how many still might be holding out. Ramos had said "mopping up operations” were under way aiid he expected full order to be restored in Manila by Saturday. ' The uprising centered in Manila but the commander of paramilitary national police in Cebu City, 350 miles southeast, backed the rebels, putting the mayor and provincial governor under house arrest. Military and hospital sources said at least 25 people had been killed and 275 wounded, including Benigno Aquino III. Mrs. Aquino, 54. said her 27:year-oId son was seriously hurt and three companions were killed when gunfire riddled their car near the presidential palace early Friday. The mutiny began at 1 a.m. Friday with attacks on the Malacanang presidential palace compound and other targets. The rebels did not appear to have widespread, popular support. When one group was chased away from the tall transmitter tower of government-run Channel 4 television station, hundreds of people poured into the streets, cheering the loyal defenders and shouting, “Cory! Cory! “ the nickname of the popular president.

radar: sketch comedy show. TLC—who wrote the theme song— performed in two of the first three episodes. The pilot aired nearly seven months before their breakout album, CrazySexyCool, was released, giving 12-year-old viewers a chance to hear a new band before they made it big. The first season of the show also featured live performances by fresh faces, including Brandy, Aaliyah, and Usher, who at the point was still going by his full name, Usher Raymond. “If you look at the 10 years [that All That was on air], it’s a who’s who of music,” says Dan Schneider, the show’s creator. Pete & Pete also made a habit of featuring musicians whom you wouldn’t expect to see on any TV show, let alone one marketed to grade schoolers. David Johansen played a police officer; Debbie Harry, a neighbor; Juliana Hatfield, a lunch lady; Kate Pierson (of the B-52s), a blind millionaire; PRIME TIME and Michael Stipe, an ice cream man. Iggy Pop was a series regular, playing the overprotective father of Nona, Michelle Trachtenberg’s character. In the same episode that featured Luscious Jackson, he took to the stage and sang to his melissa daughter, begging her to dance with him. It was a far cry from joan “I Wanna Be Your Dog,” but I’m convinced that moment was influential enough for me to spend the better part of my hart late teens fanatically collecting his albums. The series’ soundtrack was equally important, with Apples in Stereo and Stephin Merritt of the Magnetic Fields, among others, contributing music to the show.

  • Advance Praise for Something to Believe In
Advance praise for Something To Believe In ‘Andrew Stafford’sSomething To Believe In is quite an achievement. It’s all here: part tragicomic tale of a fanboy writer struggling to translate his primal affair with music into a “real” job; part exco- riating account of his ride from adolescence to adulthood and self-discovery; and part blossoming tale of love and forgiveness. Written with great humanity and girded by a soundtrack to die for – which he almost did on more than one occasion – this memoir is a punchy, unputdownable must-read.’ PETER GARRETT ‘A pulsing, rattling jukebox of a music memoir. Drop a coin, find your sound. Rock and punk and pop; the rock bottom and the very top. Love, family, sorrow, pain; the birds, the blues, the brain. A pull out your heart and feed it to anyone rock & roll sock to the core, Something To Believe In is a soaring, sweat-soaked tribute to life’s two great miracles: music and waking up each day to hear it.’ TRENT DALTON ‘Lyrical, wise and full of wonder. Andrew Stafford strips himself bare with courage, candour, and vulnerability.’ TRACEY SPICER ‘Andrew Stafford takes us on an exhilarating ride through his life as birdwatcher, cab driver, roadie, son, lover and writer. His astute and insightful observations on music and politics in Brisbane in particular from the late eighties provide a stunning backdrop to this personal expression of his life story.’ LINDY MORRISON ‘This beautifully written book reminded me of how much music helps us navigate through life, in all its complicated glory.’ MYF WARHURST Andrew Stafford is a freelance journalist and the author of Pig City: From The Saints To Savage Garden, a musical and political history of Brisbane first published in 2004.

“OK! Let’s give it to ’em right now!” screamed Jack Ely of the Kingsmen into this microphone at the start of the guitar solo for “Louie Louie.” With its simple song structure, three-chord attack and forbidden teenage appeal, this single song inspired legions of kids in garages across America to pick up guitars and ROCK. “Louie Louie” has become a touchstone in the evolution of rock’n’roll, and with over 1500 recorded cover versions to date, its influence on teenage culture and the future DIY punk underground can’t be underestimated. Ely’s vocals were so rough and unintelligible that some more puritanical listeners interpreted the lyrics as being obscene and complained. This rumor led several radio stations to ban the song and the FBI even launched an investigation. All of this only fueled the popularity of the song, which rocketed up the charts in late 1963, imprinting this grunge ur-message onto successive generations of youth, by way of the Sonics, Stooges, MC5, New York Dolls, Patti Smith, The Clash, Black Flag, and others, all of whom amplified and rebroadcast its powerful sonic meme with their own recorded versions. NEUMANN U-47 MICROPHONE, CA. 1961 “There was this great record, ‘Louie Louie,’ by a band “I was in seventh grade and ritually would watch Hugh from the Pacific Northwest called The Kingsmen.
