  • The Wine Industry Embraces Efficiency
www.ecosmagazine.com Published: 2009 The wine industry embraces efficiency Penelope Smith The latest environmental innovation across the wine industry was a topic of discussion and comparison at the recent 2009 Winery Engineering conference held in the beautiful Barossa Valley. Credit: iStockphoto Peter Policki, Technical Engineering Manager at Orlando Wines (the parent company for Pernod Ricard Pacific, makers of Jacob’s Creek and Wyndham Estate), says ‘Wine Delivery Automation’ has enabled his company to slash water consumption in its Jacob’s Creek winery at Rowland Flat in the Barossa by nearly 30 per cent. At each of the main transfer points in the winemaking process – from the vineyards, to trucks, to crushing, to fermentation, to centrifuge, to blending, to filtration, to oak, and then to bottling – there is the potential to lose significant volumes of wine when it is transferred through a pipe, and then pushed out with water. By introducing an automated mobile pump to deliver the wine from the source tank to 10 bottling tanks, Orlando Wines reduced unnecessary transfers, accidental wine overflows and water consumption. ‘Waterless transfers are having a significant benefit from the point of view of both wine quality and wastewater management,’ Mr Policki said. Michael Pecar is responsible for reducing energy and water use by 10 per cent across Foster’s Group’s 10 Australian production facilities, which includes its wineries (Wolf Blass and Lindemans) and breweries. This is no small task – based on 2007 figures, Foster’s total annual energy use was 1.74 Petajoules. One Petajoule is roughly 30 million kilowatt hours.

He was commenting on Constellation Brands’ announcement on the eve of Christmas that it was dumping its Australian, South African and UK wine interests (see News Analysis, page 12). We at Drinks International have been mulling over global international wine brands for some time. Unlike the spirits sector where, generally speaking, big global is good, the wine industry shies away from being seen as high-volume, produced on a commercial scale. We all know that the likes of Gallo, Pernod’s Wyndham Estate (Jacob’s Creek), Groupe Castel, Concha y Toro (Casillero del Diablo) et al make wines in huge volume that are available in most major wine markets around the world. But the wine-drinking consumer equates wine with 30 provenance – small scale, know the producer, taste the wine, sense the soil. The romance, the journey. ANNUAL REPORT 2011/2012 CONNECTED AT A GLANCE 02 PROFILE AND STRATEGY THE 5 PILLARS OF PERNOD RICARD Created by the link-up of the Ricard and Pernod companies in 1975, Pernod Ricard is today the world co-leader of Wines & Spirits. Organic growth and acquisitions have driven the international development of a Group that reaffirms its ambition: to become the undisputed number 1 of the industry. Already the leader of the Premium segment—the most dynamic in the industry—Pernod Ricard has opted for a model of sustainable growth. This is based on both a systematic strategy of brand upscaling, called ‘Premiumisation’, and Innovation, regarded as being an accelerator of value creation. The Group’s growth model is based on five pillars: A COMPREHENSIVE PORTFOLIO OF PREMIUM INTERNATIONAL BRANDS Since its beginning, and particularly over the last ten years of rapid acquisitions, Pernod Ricard has built a unique portfolio of Premium brands on an international scale. This portfolio covers all Wine & Spirits categories and is now illustrated by the ‘House of Brands’ concept. The ‘House’ classifies the Group’s priority brands into three segments: the ‘Top 14’, which consists of 14 strategic spirits and champagne brands; the wine segment, with its four Premium wine brands; and the 18 key local brands segment. The Top 14 includes: ✦ two ‘global icons’—ABSOLUT vodka and Chivas Regal Scotch whisky; ✦ seven Premium spirits brands—Ricard pastis, Ballantine’s Scotch whisky, Jameson Irish whiskey, Havana Club rum, Beefeater gin, and Malibu and Kahlúa liqueurs; ✦ five Prestige spirits and champagne brands—Martell cognac, The Glenlivet and Royal Salute Scotch whiskies, and G.H.MUMM and Perrier-Jouët champagnes.
