Consumption of healthy foods still key during pandemic By Regina Selman Moore

THE Healthy Caribbean Coalition is issuing a reminder that the nation’s citizens still need to consume healthy foods, inclusive of fruits and vegetables, during the current COVID-19 pandemic. The matter was brought into focus by Maisha Hutton, Executive Director of the Healthy Caribbean Coalition (HCC). Hutton noted that just recently, the HCC launched a COVID-19 Communication Strategy to guide the organisation’s advocacy and communication during the COVID-19 pandemic and one of the five objectives of this strategy focuses on promoting access to, as well as ensuring the consumption of, healthy foods. This is key, since both the HCC and the OECS have agreed that the COVID-19 pandemic threatens to undermine the gains made in recent years in the prevention and control of diet-related non-communicable diseases (NCDs), as well as the maintenance of good health among people living with NCDs. Just recently, the two entities released a joint statement on “Strengthening Food and Nutrition Security in the Caribbean: A Legacy Response to the COVID-19 Pandemic”, and one key area of focus is on putting together an “Essential Basket of Food Items”, which would include fruits and vegetables. “We know that many people are stocking up on non-perishables, which tend to be the overly ultra-processed BACK IN BUSINESS: With the business restriction waived for fruit and vegetable vendors in Barbados foods, which are not good for our amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, many are breathing a sigh of relief. Lane continued, “Just the other day we were talking about 1.5 to Stay Alive, but I think we have way more than that now, where Mother Nature has been given the opportunity to breathe and we have been given the opportunity to pause and be present in our families’ lives.” The social activist is urging persons to recognise that health, family and unity are more important than the bottom line and to do their part to stem the spread The HCC recommends that citizens eat a healthy diet, inclusive of fruits and vegetables, during the COVID-19 pandemic. of the disease. 4• Saturday April 18, 2020 The Barbados Advocate

Fifa rejects proposal to have single arbitrator in TTFA dispute

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad – A proposal that a single arbitra- tor be appointed to hear the dispute between Fifa and the ejected executive of the Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) has been rejected by football’s world gov- erning body. The proposal had been made by attorneys representing the TTFA in its appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to reverse Fifa’s decision last month to appoint a normalisation committee to oversee the association’s oper- ations. The lawyers had identified British sports lawyer Mark Hovell, who has been an arbi- trator at the CAS, as the man for the job. But according to a report on Sportsmax on the April 14 deadline to submit a response to that request, Fifa wrote to the head of arbitration at CAS, Antonio De Quesada, saying it FIFA Headquarters, Zurich. preferred to have a three- member panel hearing the Appeals Arbitration Division ment of the association carried body’s statutes and ensuring matter.
