2011 Collaboration Series I Overview Force Majeure Vineyards produces small quantities of Bordeaux- and Rhone- based wines from Eastern Washington’s celebrated Red Mountain AVA. Launched by Paul and Susan McBride in 2004 under the name Grand Reve Vintners, the winery has been making highly-acclaimed, terroir-driven wines under the Force Majeure moniker since the 2009 vintage. The winery achieved critical praise for its Collaboration Series that featured fruit from the iconic Ciel de Cheval vineyard vinified by some of Washington’s top winemakers. In 2010 Force Majeure began producing wine from their Estate Vineyard, a steep, rocky site on the upper slopes of Red Mountain. In 2014, the winery hired Todd Alexander - a talented winemaker who had previously worked at Napa Valley’s Bryant Family Vineyard - to serve as head winemaker and general manager. Vineyard and Winemaking The 2011 Collaboration Series I is our homage to Bordeaux’ Left Bank. The fruit was harvested from some of the oldest vines at Ciel du Cheval, including the 1975 and 1982 blocks that were planted in sandy loam soils over lime-cemented flood gravels. The wine was aged for 28 months in French oak barrels (70% new). Tasting Notes What sets this wine apart from so many other New World Red Bordeaux blends is its combination of concentration and structure. The aromatics combine cedar, ripe black fruit, forest floor and minerals. The acid is firm and the tannins are harmonious. This is a multi-layered wine with both the foundation and stuffing to age well into the next decade. Vineyard and Winemaking Our Estate Force Majeure vineyard was the first planting on the steep, upper slopes of Red Mountain. Its nine distinct soil types were formed by ancient floods, winds and volcanic activity. To accommodate the complexity of the soils and terrain, the vineyard was divided into 26 micro-blocks. All varieties, clonal selections, trellising and irrigation systems were carefully matched to the conditions of each individual block. Tasting Notes Our flagship wine, this bottling of Cabernet Sauvignon showcases the distinctive character of our Estate vineyard. It is quite dark with a powerful bouquet marked by cedar, earth and black fruit. The flavors are rich, concentrated and complete. The generous underpinnings of tannins are woven discreetly into the wine’s finish.

The blend changes each vintage, either being dominated by Merlot or Cabernet Franc. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. I loved the 2016 Epinette from barrel, and it certainly doesn't disappoint from bottle. Sporting a deep purple color as well as a huge bouquet of blackcurrants, black cherries, smoked earth, chocolate, and cedary spice, this ﬂamboyant, powerful beauty hits the palate with loads of fruit, has sweet tannins, no hard edges, 46% Merlot / 35% Cabernet Franc / building tannins, and a huge ﬁnish. Grand Reve quickly achieved critical praise and a loyal following for both its wines and vineyard efforts. Now with a new name, Force Majeure is building on its initial success with continued innovation in winegrowing and winemaking. The term "Force Majeure" describes the powerful and relentless elements of Nature that form the terroir of our vineyards. It also describes the unstoppable force that occurs when the highest level of viticulture combines with an all-star ensemble of Washington State winemaking talent. Their goal is to present a portfolio of wines that compare with the finest in the world. Ryan Johnson, Force Majeure Vineyards' partner and vineyard manager, oversees several of Red Mountain’s finest vineyards including the renowned Ciel du Cheval, individually selecting the rows of vines to be custom-farmed to his exacting standards for this project. Force Majeure Epinette Force Majeure Vineyards United States - Washington - Red Mountain
Force Majeure Epinette Force Majeure Vineyards United States - Washington - Red Mountain Epinette is Force Majeure's Right-bank Bordeaux-inspired blend, and was named after an avenue in Libourne (France) that leads to Pomerol and Saint-Émilion, the home of Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Epinette is also the name of a musical instrument akin to a piano, as well as a word for pine tree, which is a fitting nod to their home in Washington state. The wine itself is a blend of primarily Merlot and Cabernet Franc, with smaller amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, proportions of which change depending on the vintage. The Merlot and Cabernet Franc are grown in lower areas of the vineyard with deep, well-drained soils, much less rocky than the soils of our Rhone varietals.
