Michael Nyman Michael Nyman Michael Nyman es uno de los compositores británicos más innovadores y aclamados, cuyo trabajo abarca operas, cuartetos de cuerda, bandas sonoras y conciertos orquestales. Mucho más que un mero compositor, es además intérprete, director, pianista, escritor, musicólogo, fotógrafo y cineasta. Considerado como un “hombre del renacimiento”, su inquietud creativa y su polivalencia artística le han convertido en uno de los iconos culturales más fascinantes e influyentes de nuestro tiempo. Michael Nyman (nacido el 23 de marzo de 1944) es un pianista, musicólogo y compositor minimalista, conocido sobre todo por las obras escritas durante su larga colaboración con el cineasta británico Peter Greenaway . Nyman (que estudió con el académico Thurston Dart, experto en música barroca en el King's College de Londres) se ha inspirado frecuentemente en Música antigua en sus composiciones para los largometrajes de Greenaway: Henry Purcell en El contrato del dibujante y El cocinero, el Ladrón, su Esposa y su Amante, El piano , Heinrigh Ignaz Franz von Biber en Zoo (A Zed & Two Noughts), Mozart en Conspiración de mujeres (Drowning by Numbers) y John Dowland en Prospero's Books . Su popularidad se disparó después de componer la banda sonora de la galardonada película de Jane Campion El piano (1993). La película no fue nominada por la Academia a pesar de haberlo sido por la Academia Británica y para el Globo de Oro. Ha compuesto bandas sonoras para muchos otros filmes, la gran mayoría de ellos obras de autores independientes europeos. Sus pocas incursiones en la composición de bandas sonoras para Hollywood han sido Gattaca , Ravenous (con Damon Albarn) y The End of the Affair . Las obras más conocidas de Nyman no dirigidas al cine son Noises, Sounds & Sweet Airs (1987) para soprano, alto, tenor y conjunto instrumental (basada en la banda sonora -también de Nyman- de La Princesse de Milan); Ariel Songs (1990) para soprano y banda; MGV (Musique á Grande Vitesse) (1993); conciertos para piano (basado en El Piano), clave, trombón y saxofón; la ópera The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat (1986) (basada en un estudio de Oliver Sacks); así como diversos cuartetos de cuerda. Muchas de las obras de Nyman han sido escritas para su propio conjunto, la Michael Nyman Band , creado en 1976 para una producción de Carlo Goldoni titulada I l Campiello . El conjunto estaba compuesto originalmente por instrumentos antiguos como el rebec y la chirimía junto a instrumentos modernos como el saxofón (incluido para conseguir un sonido lo más fuerte posible sin usar amplificación), pero pasó a usar un cuarteto de cuerda amplificado, tres saxos, trombón bajo, bajo y piano, formación que ha sido modificada para algunos trabajos. En 2008 editado su álbum más reciente “Mozart 252” como resultado del encargo realizado por la BBC con motivo del 250 aniversario de Mozart. También en 2008 publica “8 Lust Songs – Il Sonetti Lussoriosi” con la soprano Marie Angel. Ese mismo año publica el foto-libro Sublime . También prepara su primera exposición en una galería, Videofile, donde presenta fotografías junto con cortos realizados por el en la galería De la Warr Pavillion de enero a marzo de 2009. Como programa complementario realizará un concierto como intérprete acompañado del cantante David McAlmont sobre temas de Nyman y su aclamada banda sonora para el clásico del cine mudo Man With a Movie Camera (Dziga Vertov, 1929). En el 2009 estrenará una nueva ópera, su primera obra encargada por BBC Proms, una pieza comisionada con motivo del 80 cumpleaños de Ennio Morricone para la primera exposición de sus fotografías y trabajos de video-arte. Asimismo su agenda de conciertos está completa de compromisos por todo el mundo tanto con la Michael Nyman Band como con proyectos especiales con artistas tan diversos como el cantante David MacAlmont, un trío de acordeonistas polaco y el respetado artista sonoro Carsten Nicolai. Otros proyectos futuros en su apretada agenda incluyen: - Una revision del Royal Ballet de su obra DGV: Danse à grande vitesse , con coreografía de Christopher Wheeldon que se estrena en el Covent Garden en enero de 2009 - Un concierto especial donde interpreta su obra Sparkie junto al artista sonoro Carsten Nicolai el 26 de marzo de 2009 en Berlín. - Un nuevo proyecto colaborativo de su obra MGV con la Michael Nyman Band y el trio polaco de acordeones Motion Trio, que se presenta el 9 de abril de 2009 en el Barbican de Londres. - El estreno mundial de su sexta ópera , Head of State , en la Catania Opera House, Sicilia, el 8 de diciembre de 2009. Michael Nyman siempre se ha caracterizado por ser un artista abierto y colaborativo, con un marcado sentido del humor y una enorme imaginación literaria, lo cual le ha permitido conectar con una gran audiencia en todo el mundo. A estas alturas de su notable carrera podría permitirse el lujo de vivir de sus éxitos. No obstante en vez de vivir de las rentas y de sus logros pasados que incluyen bandas sonoras tan celebres como El Piano y la opera El hombre que confundió a su mujer con un sombrero, así como colaboraciones de alto nivel con personas como Sir Harrison Birtwistle o Damon Albarn, el sigue mirando hacia el futuro, ampliando los límites de su arte con el mismo ímpetu y vitalidad creativa que cualquier joven de generaciones más recientes.     THE MEXICAN SUITECASE A film by Trisha Ziff Running Time: 86 Minutes Language: English, Spanish and Catalane dialogue with English and Spanish subtitles. Official website: www.TheMexicanSuitcase.com ABOUT THE FILM: THE MEXICAN SUITCASE tells the story of three lost boxes that were recovered by the film’s director, Trisha Ziff, from a closet in Mexico City in 2007. The boxes, misplaced in the chaos at the start of WWII, contained many of the Spanish Civil War negatives by the legendary photographer, Robert Capa. These boxes have become known as the Mexican Suitcase. Rumors had circulated for years of the survival of the negatives, which had disappeared from Capa's Paris studio at the start of the war. They held 126 rolls of film, not only by Capa, but also by Gerda Taro and David “Chim” Seymour, fellow photographers who were also acclaimed for their coverage Spanish Civil War. Capa, Taro and Seymour were Jewish immigrants from Hungary, Germany and Poland respectively, and they had found a home in the culturally open Paris of the early 1930s. They often traveled together in Spain. Their combined work constitutes some of the most important visual documentation of that war. It’s particularly poignant to note that Gerda Taro would die before her 27th birthday at the Battle of Brunette in Spain, killed when a Republican tank veered out of control. Her funeral bought thousands on to the streets of Paris. Exactly how the negatives reached Mexico City is not definitively known. However, given Mexico’s unique role in the war, and how it opened its doors unreservedly to the Republican exiles, it makes sense that the suitcase would find its way there.
