Duindam Abstract The Dutch glassmaker’s son and rector of the Latin school in Zutphen, Marcellus Franckheim (Zutphen 1587- Dunkirk 1644), converted from Calvinism to Catholicism in 1614 and became secretary to Cardinal Melchior Khlesl at the court of the Habsburg Emperor Matthias. He ended his life as councillor to the Spanish King Philip IV in the admiralty of the Flanders fleet. By analysing Franckheim’s surviving correspondence and publications, this thesis shows that while Franckheim’s life on first sight seems full of unexpected moves and change, there is a remarkable continuity in his faith, his contacts and his opinions. It also shows that the Dutch Gomarist-Arminian controversy during the Twelve Years Truce directly influenced his decision to convert and that a group of engaged Zutphen Catholic citizens connected him to the Counter-Reformation world of the Habsburg courts in Europe. Using Marcellus Franckheim as an exemplary case, this thesis addresses the broader question of how Dutch Catholics in the early seventeenth century, both in the Low Countries and in exile, participated in local and transnational networks to promote and consolidate their faith. It also provides insight in the interconnectedness of the political and religious conflicts in the Low Countries and the Holy Roman Empire, in particular with regard to the ways in which individuals felt involved and tried to influence these events. -

Lastly, I am greatly indebted to my long-suffering wife, Marjolaine, who has given me unbounded encouragement and inspiration every step of the way. 3 Abstract Political Storytelling and Propaganda: William Prynne and the English Afterlife of Tommaso Campanella Although there has been extensive scholarship on the pamphleteering practices and political activities of the dissident moralist and lawyer William Prynne, scant material exists on the narrative mechanism underlying Prynne’s persuasive storytelling. This dissertation argues that Prynne was the source of the literary archetype concerning the ‘Jesuit’ Tommaso Campanella diffused during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The ideas of the Italian Dominican Campanella (1568-1639) had a certain impact on the philosophical, theological and political panorama of early modern England. The study of this impact is an area that is still largely unexplored. Using Prynne’s apocryphal Campanella as an interpretative lens, my dissertation compares and analyses the anti-Catholic myths elaborated by Prynne and proposes that he devised a fictional Campanella in tandem with his exposition of the fictitious plots of Adam Contzen, Cardinal Armand Richelieu, and Robert Parsons. -

A priest; a member of a religious order, or rather of a regular congregation; a priest called to mission. Often, a teacher. Today, the list of defini- tions would more or less stop here. There is nothing specifically “Jesuit” about this description, as it could apply to the members of many other Catholic religious orders. It is one of the many consequences of secularization: in the collective perception, the differences that make up the complexity of the church are lost; the identities of the religious orders fade, and, with them, the meaning of schools that at one time were recog- nizable in speech, modes of being, and their presence in the world. Before the mid-twentieth century, things were different. If we step back eighty years, we encounter signs and meanings that are connected to a far more distant past. In January 1932, the Spanish republic disbanded the Society of Jesus within its territories and forfeited its benefits on the grounds that the Jesuits were loyal to a foreign sovereign, the pope. At that time, a Jesuit’s identity was much clearer: an enemy of the state, an agent in service of a great power, an agitator, equipped with great influence over women, aristocrats, and elites; and, above all, a sworn enemy to civil and scientific progress.1 This was more or less the conceptual catalog that was then in use. -

The Authority of the German Religious Constitution: Public Law, Philosophy, and Democracy (2013) Ian Hunter Preliminaries Germany’s current religious constitution is primarily contained in Article 140 of the 1949 Grundgesetz or Basic Law, which in turn states that ‘The provisions of Articles 136, 137, 138, 139, and 141 of the German Constitution of 11 August 1919 shall be an integral part of the Basic Law’.1 Among these articles drawn from the 1919 constitution of the Weimar republic are those guaranteeing familiar rights and liberties for individuals. These include the independence of civil and political rights from religious affiliation, the enjoyment of such rights as religious privacy, access to public office independent of religious creed, and freedom from religious compulsion.2 Other articles, however, specify the corporate rights and liberties of religious confessions or associations. In addition to stipulating that there shall be no state church, these articles protect the right to form religious associations and they guarantee each such association the right to ‘regulate and administer its affairs independently within the limits of the law valid for all’.3 They also specify that those religious associations that have been corporate bodies under public law shall remain so, while new associations may apply for this status, which brings with it the right to levy taxes on the basis of civil taxation lists.4 Somewhat surprisingly from an English, French, or American perspective, the Weimar articles also stipulate that ‘Associations whose purpose is the cultivation of a philosophical ideology [Weltanschauung] shall have the same status as religious bodies’.5 1 Parliamentary Council [of the Federal Republic of Germany], The Basic Law for the Federal Republic of Germany (Wiesbaden: Foreign Office, 1971), p. -

journal of jesuit studies 4 (2017) 545-558 brill.com/jjs Introduction ∵ “Missiones Castrenses”: Jesuits and Soldiers between Pastoral Care and Violence Vincenzo Lavenia Università di Macerata, Italy [email protected] The essays that make up this issue of the Journal explore the relations between the Society of Jesus and military life, highlighting the connections between the discipline of war, violence, and religious practice in different contexts from the sixteenth to twentieth centuries. There are two, interwoven, principal themes: on one side, the pamphlets written for officers and soldiers (Lavenia offers a fresco of this literature over a long period; Tricoire focuses on the Polish case); and on the other, the experience of the Jesuits within the armies, through the chaplains’ missions, hospital assistance, the setting up of confraternities and associations (Boltanski analyses the France of the wars of religion; Civale the case of the papal troops sent to support the Catholics against the Huguenots in 1569). The contributors have concentrated in the main on the early modern pe- riod, but Lavenia and Paiano take the investigation through to the First World War, during which—as the Italian case shows—Jesuits served as chaplains and did their best to win over the army to the Catholic cause, in a climate of brutal nationalism and militarism. Paolo di Rico and Marino Vigano discuss the portraits painted of members of the Japanese mission to Europe in the late sixteenth century. Collectively, Changing Hearts does an excellent job of unraveling the tan gled weave of: 1) the rhetorical aspects of Jesuit performances, 2) the unique role of textuality itself as a vehicle to virtuous action for both author and audi ence, as well as 3) positing the wide variety of audience reactions. The Jesuit scholar, teacher, and, in his early days, playwright Jeremias Drexel (1581–1638) had a wide impact on the Catholic reformation within the German countries in general and Bavaria in particular. This was mostly due to his edify ing and ascetic works such as the emblematic Orbis Phaethon (1629; 2 vols.), the Nicetas (1626, often reprinted) or the Zodiacus christianus seu signa xii divi- nae praedestinatonis (1618, later reprinted and enlarged), the latter directly re ferring to and correcting the infamous Zodiacus vitae (1565; 1588) by the Italian “heretic” scholar Palingenio Stellato. Aside from some translations during the seventeenth century and the posthumous Opera omnia from 1680, more recent editions of his works were scarce. Consequently, his vast output and his partic ular importance for the history of practical theology and education are almost totally overlooked and forgotten. -

Fisher University of British Columbia [email protected] Abstract The present essay considers the Jesuits’ relationship to musical culture along the con- fessional frontier of Germany, where the immediate presence of religious difference led to an explicit marking of space and boundaries, not least through visual and aural media. While Jesuit reservations concerning the appropriate use of music were always present, individual churches and colleges soon developed ambitious musical practices aimed at embellishing the Catholic liturgy and stimulating religious affect. The pres- ent essay traces a gradual shift in Jesuit attitudes toward music between roughly 1580 and 1650, showing steady growth in the Society’s use of musical resources in churches, colleges, hymnbooks, processions, and theatrical productions in the confessionally- contested German orbit.
