Among his publications are Le Miroir du Soleil (1989 and 2000), Œdipe en monarchie: Tragédie et théorie juridique à l’Âge classique (1994), Racine ou le Passion des larmes (1996), La tragédie (1997), Droit et littérature sous l’Ancien Régime, le jeu de la valeur et de la loi (2002), editions of Corneille’s Cid (2001) and Cinna (2003), and, with Christophe Triau, Qu’est-ce que le théâtre? (2006). Jan Bloemendal Ph.D. (1997) in Neo-Latin literature, Utrecht University, is a senior researcher at the Huygens Institute for the History of the Netherlands of the Royal Nether- lands Academy of Arts and Sciences. From 2006–2012 he was a Professor by special appointment of Neo-Latin Studies at the University of Amsterdam. He was editor or co-editor of Joost van den Vondel (1587–1679): Dutch Playwright in the Golden Age (2012), Neo-Latin Drama and Theatre in Early Modern Europe (2013); Brill’s Encyclopaedia of the Neo-Latin World (2014) and Bilingual Europe (2015). He also edited G.J. Vossius, Poeticae institutiones (2010). Furthermore, he wrote a history of the use of Latin through the ages (2016). Helmer Helmers Ph.D. (2011) at the University of Leiden (cum laude) is lecturer in Early Modern Dutch Literature and nwo Research Fellow at the University of Amsterdam. He has published widely on Anglo-Dutch cultural and literary exchange in the seventeenth century. His monograph The Royalist Republic (Cambridge University Press, 2015) analyses Dutch debates on the English Civil Wars and regicide. His current research project focuses on transnational publicity during the Thirty Years’ War. Blair Hoxby Ph.D. (1998) in English literature, Yale University, is Associate Professor of English at Stanford University. Among his publications are Mammon’s Music: Literature and Economics in the Age of Milton (2002), What was Tragedy? Theory and the Early Modern Canon (2015) and, as co-editor, Milton in the Longe Restau- ration (2016). His research interest include Milton, the English Civil Wars, the about the authors ix Restoration, Renaissance and Enlightenment theater, tragedy and tragic theory, early opera, and performance theory. Sarah Knight Ph.D. (2002) in Renaissance Studies, Yale University, is Professor of Renaissance Literature at the University of Leicester. Her main interests are in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century literature, particularly works written in or about institu- tions of learning (schools, universities, Inns of Court). She has translated and co-edited Leon Battista Alberti’s Momus for the I Tatti Renaissance Library (2003). With Stefan Tilg, she recently edited The Oxford Handbook of Neo-Latin Literature (2015). Tatiana Korneeva Ph.D. (2008) in Classics, Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa, is Research Fel- low at the Freie Universität Berlin and a member of the erc-funded project Early Modern Drama and the Cultural Net (‘DramaNet’), 2010–2016. She is the author of ‘Alter et ipse’: Identità e duplicità nel sistema dei personaggi della Tebaide di Stazio (2011). Her research interests include early modern political thought, the reception of the classical tradition, the history of theater in com- parative perspective (1400–1800), and opera studies. She is currently working on a book about the interaction between political discourse, spectatorship, and the emergent public sphere in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Italian theater. Frans-Willem Korsten Ph.D. (1998) in Cultural Analysis, University of Amsterdam, is Professor by special appointment of Literature and Society at the Erasmus School for His- tory, Culture and Communication, and Senior lecturer at the Leiden University Institute for Cultural Disciplines. Sanborn Concord, NH New Hampshire Historical Society -- 1917 The story which I have to tell concerns the biography of one who lived through the years of the most wonderful century of English history, that period from 1560 to 1660. Those years marked the youth and splendor of British achievement in the realm of spiritual awakening, of literary and intellectual development, and of commercial activity, colonization, and world building. In the hundred years I have mentioned Puritanism made its first successful stand against the English church, which still clung to Romish superstition. They saw, those golden years, the imperishable dramas of Shakespeare unfolded to the world, the lofty verse of Milton, the graceful muse of Jonson, and the brilliant philosophy of Bacon. For them the poetical soul, the chivalrous life and death of Sir Philip Sidney, were current fact, not history and tradition. In that short century lived and died the great freebooters of the virgin seas, Raleigh and Drake, Frobisher and Hawkins. Less afraid of new worlds than of old creeds, the Pilgrims and the Puritans in that century left their homes in the " haunt of ancient peace," and sought fresh soil wherein to plant the colony which was to grow into our present vast spreading republic. The feeble, pedantic, and pleasure loving Stuarts saw in that century the sceptre snatched from their hands, when Hampden, Cromwell, and Harry Vane turned England from a kingdom into a commonwealth. In the same period Holland became a Protestant republic in spite of the bloody persecutions of Philip.

    Nigel Fabb and Morris Halle (2008), Meter in Poetry Paul Kiparsky Stanford University [email protected] Linguistics Department, Stanford University, CA. 94305-2150 July 19, 2009 Review (4872 words) The publication of this joint book by the founder of generative metrics and a distinguished literary linguist is a major event.1 F&H take a fresh look at much familiar material, and introduce an eye-opening collection of metrical systems from world literature into the theoretical discourse. The complex analyses are clearly presented, and illustrated with detailed derivations. A guest chapter by Carlos Piera offers an insightful survey of Southern Romance metrics. Like almost all versions of generative metrics, F&H adopt the three-way distinction between what Jakobson called VERSE DESIGN, VERSE INSTANCE, and DELIVERY INSTANCE.2 F&H’s the- ory maps abstract grid patterns onto the linguistically determined properties of texts. In that sense, it is a kind of template-matching theory. The mapping imposes constraints on the distribution of texts, which define their metrical form. Recitation may or may not reflect meter, according to conventional stylized norms, but the meter of a text itself is invariant, however it is pronounced or sung. Where F&H differ from everyone else is in denying the centrality of rhythm in meter, and char- acterizing the abstract templates and their relationship to the text by a combination of constraints and processes modeled on Halle/Idsardi-style metrical phonology. F&H say that lineation and length restrictions are the primary property of verse, and rhythm is epiphenomenal, “a property of the way a sequence of words is read or performed” (p.

Alessandro Valignano (1539–1606), the visitor to the Jesuit missionary enter- prise in the Far East, requested that Superior General Claudio Acquaviva (1543–1615) send him 600 or 800 copies of Lactantius (240–320) (probably The Divine Institutes, which Valignano himself had annotated) for use by Japanese seminarians. The first text that Valignano’s novice, Matteo Ricci (1552–1610), wrote to his literati audience in China was a treatise on friendship—an imita- tion of Cicero’s De amicitia. The first book published by the first printing press of the Jesuit Roman College, where Ricci was trained, was Martialis’s Epigrams, a pagan classic. It was edited by the Jesuit André des Freux (d. 1556) who— along with Jerónimo Nadal and Peter Canisius—was part of the group that founded the first Jesuit school in Messina. Robert Southwell, a poet and Elizabethan martyr, wrote in Latin before he wrote in English. Classical tragedies of Seneca, often used by Jesuit playwrights, were translated into English by a sixteenth-century English Jesuit poet, Jasper Heywood. The latter’s countryman—Gerard Manley Hopkins, the Victorian Jesuit poet and professor of classics—was the author of an English translation of Cicero’s De officiis.

    English 201 Major British Authors Harris Reading Guide: Forms There are two general forms we will concern ourselves with: verse and prose. Verse is metered, prose is not. Poetry is a genre, or type (from the Latin genus, meaning kind or race; a category). Other genres include drama, fiction, biography, etc. POETRY. Poetry is described formally by its foot, line, and stanza. 1. Foot. Iambic, trochaic, dactylic, etc. 2. Line. Monometer, dimeter, trimeter, tetramerter, Alexandrine, etc. 3. Stanza. Sonnet, ballad, elegy, sestet, couplet, etc. Each of these designations may give rise to a particular tradition; for example, the sonnet, which gives rise to famous sequences, such as those of Shakespeare. The following list is taken from entries in Lewis Turco, The New Book of Forms (Univ. Press of New England, 1986). Acrostic. First letters of first lines read vertically spell something. Alcaic. (Greek) acephalous iamb, followed by two trochees and two dactyls (x2), then acephalous iamb and four trochees (x1), then two dactyls and two trochees. Alexandrine. A line of iambic hexameter. Ballad. Any meter, any rhyme; stanza usually a4b3c4b3. Think Bob Dylan. Ballade. French. Line usually 8-10 syllables; stanza of 28 lines, divided into 3 octaves and 1 quatrain, called the envoy. The last line of each stanza is the refrain. Versions include Ballade supreme, chant royal, and huitaine. Bob and Wheel. English form. Stanza is a quintet; the fifth line is enjambed, and is continued by the first line of the next stanza, usually shorter, which rhymes with lines 3 and 5. Example is Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.
