  • Extreme Art Film: Text, Paratext and DVD Culture Simon Hobbs
Extreme Art Film: Text, Paratext and DVD Culture Simon Hobbs The thesis is submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the award of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of the University of Portsmouth. September 2014 Declaration Whilst registered as a candidate for the above degree, I have not been registered for any other research award. The results and conclusions embodied in this thesis are the work of the named candidate and have not been submitted for any other academic award. Word count: 85,810 Abstract Extreme art cinema, has, in recent film scholarship, become an important area of study. Many of the existing practices are motivated by a Franco-centric lens, which ultimately defines transgressive art cinema as a new phenomenon. The thesis argues that a study of extreme art cinema needs to consider filmic production both within and beyond France. It also argues that it requires an historical analysis, and I contest the notion that extreme art cinema is a recent mode of Film production. The study considers extreme art cinema as inhabiting a space between ‘high’ and ‘low’ art forms, noting the slippage between the two often polarised industries. The study has a focus on the paratext, with an analysis of DVD extras including ‘making ofs’ and documentary featurettes, interviews with directors, and cover sleeves. This will be used to examine audience engagement with the artefacts, and the films’ position within the film market. Through a detailed assessment of the visual symbols used throughout the films’ narrative images, the thesis observes the manner in which they engage with the taste structures and pictorial templates of art and exploitation cinema.

GALACTICA 1980 GALACTICA DISCOVERS EARTH (early draft) by Glen A. Larson Revision Date: November 26, 2979 FADE IN ON A BEAUTIFUL STARFIELD - NIGHT WALTER Fantastic, isn't it... Do you ever wonder if there's life out there? We are on an average looking guy, in average casual clothes, circa 1980. He is in an average compact car with a sunroof, through which Walter gazes skyward, his arm draped off screen. We follow his arm with camera to take in a prettier than average young woman who seems interested in anything but Walter and the stars. JAMIE I'm not too sure there's even life around here. Walter's eyes drift down and over, his mood shattered. WALTER What? JAMIE I've had it... WALTER What'd I do now? JAMIE Nothing... It's what I did... WALTER You've been like this for a week... If it's the wedding, we can move it up... I just thought your folks would prefer... JAMIE Walter... It isn't working... WALTER You don't mean us... JAMIE Walter... I don't mean you and me... I mean me and this planet... It just isn't working out... I got passed over today... 2. WALTER Passed over for what... Head of the steno pool... Once we're married I don't want you working anyway... JAMIE I didn't apply for head of the steno pool... I was interviewed by Scott to get an on-camera assignment... WALTER On-camera... You? JAMIE And what's that supposed to mean? "Barefoot (Contessa) in the Kitchen." Teaching Media Quarterly 2, no. 2 (2014). http://pubs.lib.umn.edu/tmq/vol2/iss2/6 Teaching Media Quarterly is published by the University of Minnesota Libraries Publishing. Silverman and Purnell: Barefoot (Contessa) in the Kitchen Teaching Media Quarterly Volume 2, Edition 2 (Winter 2014): Teaching about Food and Media Barefoot (Contessa) in the Kitchen Overview and Rationale It is well known that popular culture represents and perpetuates the gender inequities that exist in our culture. Food media are no exception (Swenson, 2013). In fact, food media use gendered cultural norms to sell audiences their products (the shows, the cookbooks, the advertisements during the shows, etc.). In other words, food media commodify gender by selling audiences what they already understand to be true about gender as a way to increase profit (Forbes, 2013). Food media, and food television in particular, offer sites to examine the cultural struggles of gender. Both food and gender are intensely personal, social, and culturally specific phenomena (Barthes, 2013/1961). Further, television shapes the way we understand culture (Fiske, 2010). According to Cramer (2011): As a manifestation of culture, food is one of the most potent media for conveying meanings related to identity, ethnicity, nationhood, gender, class, sexuality and religion – in short, all those aspects of social, political and relational life that convey who and what we are and what matters to us.

  • Television Sharknados and Twitter Storms
Television Sharknados and Twitter Storms: Cult Film Fan Practices in the Age of Social Media Branding Stephen William Hay A thesis submitted to Victoria University of Wellington in fulfilment of the regulations for the degree of Master of Arts in Media Studies Victoria University of Wellington 2016 Abstract This thesis examines the Syfy channel’s broadcast of the television movie Sharknado and the large number of tweets that were sent about it. Sharknado’s audience engaged in cult film viewing practices that can be understood using paracinema theory. Paracinema engagement with cult films has traditionally taken place in midnight screenings in independent movie theatres and private homes. Syfy’s audience was able to engage in paracinematic activity that included making jokes about Sharknado’s low quality of production and interacting with others who were doing the same through the affordances of Twitter. In an age where branding has become increasingly important, Syfy clearly benefited from all the fan activity around its programming. Critical branding theory argues that the value generated by a business’s brand comes from the labour of consumers. Brand management is mostly about encouraging and managing consumer labour. The online shift of fan practices has created new opportunities for brand managers to subsume the activities of consumers. Cult film audience practices often have an emphasis on creatively and collectively engaging in rituals and activities around a text. These are the precise qualities that brands require from their consumers. Sharknado was produced and marketed by Syfy to invoke the cult film subculture as part of Syfy’s branding strategy.
