PINS, 2015, 48, 1 – 21, http://dx.doi.org/10.17159/2309-8708/2015/n48a1 Capitalism and Suffering Abstract The present article is an exploration of the relationship Bert Olivier between neoliberal capitalism and suffering in a broad Department of Philosophy, sense, which includes everything from economic and University of the Free State, physical suffering, psychic suffering in the form of Bloemfontein anxiety, self-doubt, uncertainty and stress, to more acute [email protected] suffering, such as identifiable pathologies. Its point of departure is the patho-analytic principle, that one can Keywords: gain an understanding of the general psychic condition anxiety, capitalism, choice, of humanity by focusing on the characteristic traits of a market, neoliberalism, pathology such as, for example, obsessional neurosis, and resistance, stress, suffering examining the possibility that some of these characteristics are encountered in the population at large. Focusing first on evidence of severe economic suffering under the impact of what Klein calls “disaster capitalism”, the argument proceeds to Parker’s claim, that the typical subject under capitalism displays the character of obsessional neurosis, then to Salecl’s examination of capitalism’s “ideology of choice”, Verhaeghe’s investigation of the effects of a market- based economy on psychic health, and Federici’s claim that there are signs of increasing resistance to capitalist labour. It concludes with some prospective thoughts on Salecl’s, and Hardt and Negri’s diagnosis of present social conditions under capitalism. Prelude At the 2013 International Society for Theoretical Psychology conference in Chile there was a workshop on “The effects of the neoliberal regime on your body” in the context of the global corporatization of universities.

God is terug!

PHOTOGRAPH COURTESY TOM MORTIER n her diary, Godelieva De Troyer classified her moods by color. She felt “dark gray” when she Imade a mistake while sewing or cooking. When her boyfriend talked too much, she moved between “very black” and “black!” She was afflicted with the worst kind of “black spot” when she visited her parents at their farm in northern Belgium. In their presence, she felt aggressive and dangerous. She worried that she had two selves, one “empathetic, charming, sensible” and the other cruel. She felt “light gray” when she went to the hairdresser or rode her bicycle through the woods in Hasselt, a small city in the Flemish region of Belgium, where she lived. At these moments, she wrote, she tried to remind herself of all the things she could do to feel happy: “demand respect from others”; “be physically attractive”; “take a reserved stance”; “live in harmony with nature.” She imagined a life in which she was intellectually appreciated, socially engaged, fluent in English (she was taking a class), and had a “cleaning lady with whom I get along very well.” Godelieva, who taught anatomy to nurses, had been in therapy since she was nineteen. With each new doctor, she embraced the therapeutic process anew, adopting her doctor’s philosophy and rewriting her life story so that it fit his theory of the mind.

  • Clinical Encounters in Sexuality: Psychoanalytic Practice and Queer Theory
clinical encounters in sexuality advance praise for clinical encounters in sexuality “In this terrific book, the psychoanalysts and the queer theo- rists — who are sometimes the same person, but usually not — are less in “conversation” about sexuality than they are pondering whether they have the same desires for sexuality. Is it perverse enough, is it dirty enough, is it ecstatic enough? Is it available to be “used” to cure as well as to make shattering bearable; to imagine as well as to capture truth? There is a lot of talking across each other in this book — sexual difference takes shape so many ways, as does the relation between structures and norms. But if interdisciplinarity is rarely achieved, there is also a lot of generous listening and imagining on both sides, about what it would be like to want cure and care where the object sexuality and its subject are only ever provisionally stable. It’s thrilling and frustrating to read this, and I am so glad I did. It will be great for teaching.” — Lauren Berlant, University of Chicago, author of Cruel Opti- mism, The Female Complaint, and Desire/Love. “No book in psychoanalysis could be more timely than Clini- cal Encounters in Sexuality. Here, psychoanalysis, often accused of heterosexism, is challenged to rethink its approach to sexu- alities. The accusation is justified, at least historically, and the responses here by leading analysts and theorists from a variety of orientations are as diverse as they are illuminating. There is the guilty-as-charged response which calls for a rethink of ana- lytic concepts.

Forehand, Ph.D., Dean of the Graduate College ABSTRACT In his essay, Don’t Mourn for Us, Jim Sinclair describes autism as a “way of being.” He maintains there is “no normal child hidden behind the autism” and that “it colors every experience, every sensation, perception, thought, emotion, and encounter, every aspect of existence.” In an attempt to appreciate the depth of Sinclair’s statements, this thesis approaches autism as a “way of being” through the psychoanalytic theory of Jacques Lacan.

  • THE GREAT WAR CENTENARY in Flanders
THE GREAT WAR CENTENARY in Flanders The Great War Centenary • Dear Reader, The whole world, and Flanders in particular, is commemorating the 100th anniversary of the First World War. More than nine million soldiers from about fifty modern-day nations did not survive the ‘Great War’. 600,000 soldiers and civilians lost their lives in our country, among whom 550,000 in the Westhoek region, also known as Flanders Fields. Flanders experienced all aspects of this first global conflict first-hand: the invasion, the occupation, the four-year trench war and, finally, the liberation. To this day, the Great War lives on in our collective memory. The Government of Flanders is actively engaged in the Great War commemoration. In doing so, it builds on the efforts made during the past years. One century later, we wish to commemorate the victims of this war and condemn senseless war violence. The commemoration is an excellent opportunity to ensure the sustainable preservation of our war heritage for future generations. As coordinator of ‘The Great War Centenary (2014-18)’, I have the pleasure of presenting to you the Government of Flanders’ project for the commemoration of the First World War centenary. This brochure explains the project’s vision and provides an overview of the activities for each policy area: foreign policy, tourism, culture and media, heritage conservation, education, nature and forests, agriculture, etc. The remembrance project in all its facets is a unique spearhead in the Government of Flanders’ policy for the next few years. In a serene manner we also want to acquaint young people with the horrific events that took place one century ago and their consequences, and to make them reflect on war and peace.

  • Thesis Applied Ethics Selective Abortion of Down Syndrome & Alasdair Macintyre
Thesis Applied Ethics Selective abortion of Down Syndrome & Alasdair MacIntyre By: Remi Leroy Date of birth: 3th April 1995 Born: Ghent, Belgium Student number: 6455980 MA Applied Ethics University of Utrecht Academic year: 2018-2019 Submitted on: 20/06/2019 Supervisor: dr. Van Den Hoven, Mariëtte Second reader: Naomi Van Steenbergen Word count: 21.487 2 Abstract Non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) is increasingly used to screen for Down Syndrome. As a result, NIPT could prevent almost every child with Down Children to be born when people are open to selective abortion after testing. The main research question is whether this combination of NIPT and abortion is morally problematic. Both can of course be valued by themselves, NIPT for informative purposes and abortion as a right of bodily integrity. But nonetheless, there’s a separate concern about whether both procedures should be combined to decrease the number of Down children. Some find this wanted because Down children experience more suffering, whereas others point out that society should focus on reducing their suffering instead of avoiding their birth. Observing that society remains divided over this dispute, one could argue from a liberal perspective that only future parents as individuals should decide whether abortion and NIPT should be combined. Yet this thesis uses the virtue ethics of Alasdair MacIntyre to contest this liberal division between public institutions and personal decision making. This implies that the research question must be answered by pointing out what the virtues of good parents and medical practice are. First, by adding the work of different virtue ethicists it will be argued that the combination of NIPT and abortion is wrongful because future parents have a prima facie duty to accept their child the way it is.

While agreement strengthens conviction, it is generally only disagreement which helps to strengthen arguments.”

  • Euthanasia Policy and Practice in Belgium: Critical Observations And
Euthanasia Policy and Practice in Belgium: Critical Observations and Suggestions for Improvement Raphael Cohen-Almagor, D.Phil.1 ABSTRACT: The essay opens with some background information about the context of euthanasia in Belgium. It proceeds by discussing the Bel- gian law on euthanasia and concerns about the law, its interpretations and implementation. Finally, the major developments and controversies since the law came into effect are discussed. Suggestions as to how to improve the Belgian law and circumscribe the practice of euthanasia are made, urging Belgian legislators and the medical establishment to refl ect and study so as to prevent potential abuse of vulnerable patients. _________________________ This article investigates and discusses the practice of euthanasia in Belgium. Its methodology is based on critical review of the literature supplemented by inter- views I conducted in Belgium with leading scholars and practitioners in February 2003 and February 2005. The interviews were conducted in English, usually in the interviewees’ offi ces. The interviews were semi-structured. I began with a list of twenty-four questions (see Appendix), but did not insist on answers to all of them if I saw that the interviewee preferred to speak about subjects that were not included in the original questionnaire. The length of interviews varied from one to two and a half hours. 1 Professor and Chair, University of Hull; author, THE RIGHT TO DIE WITH DIGNITY: AN ARGUMENT IN ETHICS, MEDICINE AND LAW (2001), EUTHANASIA IN THE NETHERLANDS: THE POLICY AND PRACTICE OF MERCY KILLING (2004); and THE SCOPE OF TOLERANCE (2006); editor, MEDICAL ETHICS AT THE DAWN OF THE 21ST CENTURY (2000); D.Phil., Oxford U., 1991.
