We really appreciate you learning songs just for us and giving us input on the set -list, not to mention letting my brother come up and sing “Sweet Caroline” with you! You guys DOMINATED a huge range of genres, making clear what phe- nomenal musicians you are. Most importantly, you kept the dance floor packed. I can’t tell you how many people told us what a great band we had. On top of all that, we appreciated how professional, flexible and easy-to-work with you were. Thanks for helping to make our wedding day as fun and special as we could have hoped for – we couldn’t be happier to have booked you! Thank you again!” – Elise and Spencer Wedding Reception 2014 “They did great! They were very entertaining and fun, and held the crowd all night. I’ve had several co-workers stop by my desk this morning with compliments for the ‘Big Toe’…thanks so much!! … Some folks that stayed later than I did said the dance floor got progressively fuller, so despite the arrangement you succeeded in draw- ing them in, yaaaaaay” Thanks so much, you all were a real pleasure to work with…for what it’s worth, you’re the first band/agency I have followed up with to say that following our party. It was truly a pleasure working with you and, thanks for a great time!” - Laurie, Interstate Companies, Inc. “The band was great. I received nothing but positive feedback about the band on Saturday night and several times since then. They did a great job and were a pleasure to work with.”- St Vincent De Paul Harvest Fest “They did a fabulous job! Everyone loved them. We had over 400 people, one of the best attended events!” - Annandale Community “Hiring Big Toe and the Jam was one of the best decisions we made regarding our wedding. They were professional and friendly when setting up, and they did an excellent job of listening to what we wanted during our planning meeting. At the wedding, they kept everyone dancing and the energy high. I can’t tell you how many comments we had from our guests and people working at the venue about how good they are and how much fun everyone was having. My hus- band’s highlight of the night was when he was pulled up on stage to sing “Sweet Caroline” in front of everyone — very spontaneous (very not him!), but so much fun! We went to a wedding this past weekend where there was a band, and they couldn’t hold a candle to the talent of Big Toe. They are some talented mu- sicians! If there is ever an occasion in the future where we would need a band, we wouldn’t hesitate to hire them again”. -Beth Schultz, 763-226-0054 booking: www.themusicworks.com 651.257.9500 .

  • “Rapper's Delight”
1 “Rapper’s Delight” From Genre-less to New Genre I was approached in ’77. A gentleman walked up to me and said, “We can put what you’re doing on a record.” I would have to admit that I was blind. I didn’t think that somebody else would want to hear a record re-recorded onto another record with talking on it. I didn’t think it would reach the masses like that. I didn’t see it. I knew of all the crews that had any sort of juice and power, or that was drawing crowds. So here it is two years later and I hear, “To the hip-hop, to the bang to the boogie,” and it’s not Bam, Herc, Breakout, AJ. Who is this?1 DJ Grandmaster Flash I did not think it was conceivable that there would be such thing as a hip-hop record. I could not see it. I’m like, record? Fuck, how you gon’ put hip-hop onto a record? ’Cause it was a whole gig, you know? How you gon’ put three hours on a record? Bam! They made “Rapper’s Delight.” And the ironic twist is not how long that record was, but how short it was. I’m thinking, “Man, they cut that shit down to fifteen minutes?” It was a miracle.2 MC Chuck D [“Rapper’s Delight”] is a disco record with rapping on it. So we could do that. We were trying to make a buck.3 Richard Taninbaum (percussion) As early as May of 1979, Billboard magazine noted the growing popularity of “rapping DJs” performing live for clubgoers at New York City’s black discos.4 But it was not until September of the same year that the trend gar- nered widespread attention, with the release of the Sugarhill Gang’s “Rapper’s Delight,” a fifteen-minute track powered by humorous party rhymes and a relentlessly funky bass line that took the country by storm and introduced a national audience to rap.

  • Venturing in the Slipstream
VENTURING IN THE SLIPSTREAM THE PLACES OF VAN MORRISON’S SONGWRITING Geoff Munns BA, MLitt, MEd (hons), PhD (University of New England) A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of Western Sydney University, October 2019. Statement of Authentication The work presented in this thesis is, to the best of my knowledge and belief, original except as acknowledged in the text. I hereby declare that I have not submitted this material, either in full or in part, for a degree at this or any other institution. .............................................................. Geoff Munns ii Abstract This thesis explores the use of place in Van Morrison’s songwriting. The central argument is that he employs place in many of his songs at lyrical and musical levels, and that this use of place as a poetic and aural device both defines and distinguishes his work. This argument is widely supported by Van Morrison scholars and critics. The main research question is: What are the ways that Van Morrison employs the concept of place to explore the wider themes of his writing across his career from 1965 onwards? This question was reached from a critical analysis of Van Morrison’s songs and recordings. A position was taken up in the study that the songwriter’s lyrics might be closely read and appreciated as song texts, and this reading could offer important insights into the scope of his life and work as a songwriter. The analysis is best described as an analytical and interpretive approach, involving a simultaneous reading and listening to each song and examining them as speech acts.

By: Paul Zollo Date: 1991 Transcribed from GBS #3 booklet "I've made shoes for everyone, even you, while I still go barefoot" from "I and I" By Bob Dylan Songwriting? What do I know about songwriting? Bob Dylan asked, and then broke into laughter. He was wearing blue jeans and a white tank-top T-shirt, and drinking coffee out of a glass. "It tastes better out of a glass," he said grinning. His blonde acoustic guitar was leaning on a couch near where we sat. Bob Dylan's guitar . His influence is so vast that everything that surrounds takes on enlarged significance: Bob Dylan's moccasins. Bob Dylan's coat . "And the ghost of 'lectricity howls in the bones of her face Where these visions of Johanna have now taken my place. The harmonicas play the skeleton keys and the rain And these visions of Johanna are now all that remain" from "Visions of Johanna" Pete Seeger said, "All songwriters are links in a chain," yet there are few artists in this evolutionary arc whose influence is as profound as that of Bob Dylan.

  • Monitoring the Cross-Border Circulation of European Music Repertoire
Monitoring the cross-border circulation of European music repertoire within the European Union Report commissioned by EMO & Eurosonic Noordeslag Emmanuel Legrand January 2012 1 About this report: The music scene in Europe is very strong, creative and diversified. Each country within the European Union has a solid local music scene. However, due to the structure of the various national markets, the existence of language diversity and different cultural behaviours, the flow of repertoire across borders within the EU is far from reflecting the notion of one single market. Although there have been embryonic attempts to document the situation of European music repertoire in Europe, the full scale of the situation has never been fully monitored. The European Music Office, in partnership with Eurosonic Noordeslag and Nielsen, has undertaken a preliminary study aimed at monitoring and analysing the cross-border flows of repertoire within the EU in 2011. The study provides quantifiable data on the circulation of repertoire with the ambition of becoming the foundation for an observatory of the circulation of repertoire in Europe. This report has been made possible with the contributions from the following organisations: [NB: the views expressed in this report are those of its author and do not represent those of EMO of Eurosonic Noordeslag.] 2 Executive Summary The study on the circulation of European repertoire within the European Union was commissioned by the European Music Office and Dutch conference and festival Eurosonic Noordeslag. Its purpose is to analyse the flow of repertoire between EU countries, based on statistical data on radio airplay and digital downloads.

  • Biography -- Printable Version
Biography -- Printable Version Peter Wolf's Historical Biography Written & Researched by Bryan Wiser, and Sheila Warren with Mimi Fox. Born in New York City, Peter grew up in the Bronx during the mid-1950's in a small, three-room apartment where he lived with his parents, older sister, two cats, dog and parakeet. For some time, Peter lived with his grandmother, an actress in New York City's Yiddish Theater. She and Peter had a strong bond, and she affectionately named him "Little Wolf" for his energetic and rambunctious ways. His father was a musician, vaudevillian and singer of light opera. Like Peter did years later, his father left home at age fourteen to join the Schubert Theater Touring Company with which he traveled the country performing light operas such as The Student Prince and Merry Widow. He had his own radio show called The Boy Baritone, which featured new songs from Tin Pan Alley, and was a member of the Robert Shaw Chorale. As a result of such artistic pursuits, Peter's father underwent long periods of unemployment that created a struggle to make financial ends meet. Peter's mother was an elegant and attractive woman who taught inner-city children in the South Bronx for 27 years. A political activist, union organizer and staunch civil rights advocate, she supported racial equality by attending many of the southern "freedom rides" and marches. Peter's older sister was also a teacher as well as a photographer who now works as an advocate for persons with disabilities. She continues her mother's tradition, often marching on Washington to support the rights of the disabled.

  • 1 Amazing Grace
1Amazing Grace BY JOHN NEWTON 1. Amazing grace, how sweet the sound That saves a wretch like me. I once was lost, but now I'm found; Was bound, but now I’m free. 2. 'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear And grace my fear relieved; How precious did that grace appear The hour I first believed. 3. Through many dangers, toils and snares We have already come; 'Twas grace that brought us safe thus far, And grace will lead us on. 4. When we've been there ten thousand years, Bright shining as the sun, We've no less days to sing God's praise Than when we’d first begun. 5. Amazing grace, how sweet the sound That saves a wretch like me. I once was lost, but now I'm found; Was bound, but now I'm free. 2Just aCloser Walk With Thee TRADITIONAL 1. Just a closer walk with Thee, Grant it, Jesus, is my plea; Daily walking close with Thee, Let it be, dear Lord, let it be. 2. Through the days of toil and snares, If I falter, Lord, who cares? Who with me my burden shares? None but Thee, dear Lord, none but Thee. 3. When my feeble life is o'er Time for me will be no more; Guide me gently, safely on To thy shore, dear Lord, to thy shore. 4. I am weak, but Thou art strong. Jesus, keep me from all wrong. I'll be satisfied as long As I walk, let me walk close to Thee.
