Additional tables ............................................................................................................................................. 136 3 The music market in Poland – most important conclusions The report consists of seven thematically connected parts. Part one contains a description of the recorded music, music publishing and synchronisation market in 2016–18. Chapter two outlines the most popular artists in Poland broken down by the sources of their popularity. Chapter three presents the first comprehensive description of the concert market in Poland. Part four estimates the export value of Polish music and discusses the most important export directions. Chapter five describes the musical preferences of Poles, chapter six the institutional support for the music industry, and chapter seven the educational offer addressed to musicians in Poland. Data collected in the report is shown in the form of rankings, most often comprising 25 key elements of the given set. Based on the experience and practice of the music industry (e.g. Billboard1 charts: 200, Hot 100, Artist 100, the Polish Official Retail Sales Chart – OLiS2), the authors have decided to present collected data in the form of rankings. The detailed methodology of preparing the rankings, the data sources used and the manner of obtaining information are described in the methodological appendix. For the purpose of the report, a uniform method was used to create rankings of the most popular artists from individual music charts. The results are based on new databases collected from available online sources based on specially prepared automated tools. Owing to the diverse nature of collected rankings and aggregating information between them, the authors have been able to identify the most popular artists irrespective of the music distribution channel. The employed methods allowed for a comprehensive and internally coherent presentation of the Polish music market. This was possible in spite of the lack of comprehensive, full and unified data about the Polish music market. Parts of the report that require prudent analysis on behalf of readers due to limited data are clearly marked. In the authors’ opinion, public administration should spend the most energy and financial resources on improving the data collection process as well as monitoring and publishing data. Consequently, subsequent analyses of the music market could be more comprehensive in nature. This would facilitate the process of planning public policy and enhance the effectiveness of artist support, while enabling artists to gain greater popularity (also abroad). The tools developed in the course of working on the report as well as the analysed data sources may be used again to ensure methodological continuity of research on the structure of the Polish music market in the years to come. Nevertheless, they should be treated as a starting point, and be gradually supplemented and improved by data collected and made available for research purposes on the administrative level. The Polish music market does not differ greatly from foreign markets. Similar trends to those present globally can also be seen in Poland: • Increasing value of the music market and systematic return to the values before crisis it faced since the 2000s; • Growing share of independent labels in the phonographic industry; 1 https://www.billboard.com/charts 2 http://olis.onyx.pl/listy/ 4 • Ever greater role of streaming and the internet in building artist popularity; • Growing share of the concert market in artist revenues. What sets the Polish music market apart from the global one is, above all: • The share of physical sales on the recorded music market is several times greater and no clear departure from these formats has been observed; • Considerable importance and listenership of the radio, which remains unchanged despite the growing importance of streaming platforms and the Internet; • Relatively low popularity of disco polo – a genre unique to Poland; • Polish artists are much more

  • Changing Nature of Music Creation
MIDiA Consulting | The Changing Nature of Music Creation MIDiA Research February 2020 MIDiA Consulting – The Changing Nature of Music Creation Introduction: Independent Artists Continue to Reshape the Music Industry The rise of a new generation of empowered, independent artists is driving transformational change throughout the music industry. If streaming drove change in the distribution of music, then today’s independent artists are driving change throughout the entirety of the music business, from music creation to how artists can make a viable living from their creations. The base of 3.7 million independent artists is highly diverse, encompassing: 1. Rising artists who will build bigger audiences and progress to label deals 2. Former label artists who are maintaining independent latter-stage careers 3. Enthusiasts with small audiences 4. Established independent artists who have found their global niches All four groups are important, but the lattermost is in many ways the most important and contributes to the artists direct segment being a viable commercial sector in its own right. All four groups are forging a different path through the industry, yet all of them make the same creative product: songs. In this research, we examine some of the trends that are influencing the way songs are created, produced, marketed and distributed, whether at the top of the charts or deep in streaming niches. How should new industry services adapt their propositions to help serve artists better as they create songs for this new, empowered industry? About This Research Amuse commissioned MIDiA Research to explore how the music industry is changing, from three key perspectives: 1.

The article draws attention to anoma- lies in upbringing. Examples of artistic stimulation within family are shown. Keywords Family, child, music, development, education. Genes and the upbringing of children are of fundamental importance and act as the most powerful factors conditioning a child’s personality. The influence of a family1 has stupendous meaning in the primary developmental stage of a child’s growth, often bearing life-long consequences. • “Rapper's Delight”
1 “Rapper’s Delight” From Genre-less to New Genre I was approached in ’77. A gentleman walked up to me and said, “We can put what you’re doing on a record.” I would have to admit that I was blind. I didn’t think that somebody else would want to hear a record re-recorded onto another record with talking on it. I didn’t think it would reach the masses like that. I didn’t see it. I knew of all the crews that had any sort of juice and power, or that was drawing crowds. So here it is two years later and I hear, “To the hip-hop, to the bang to the boogie,” and it’s not Bam, Herc, Breakout, AJ. Who is this?1 DJ Grandmaster Flash I did not think it was conceivable that there would be such thing as a hip-hop record. I could not see it. I’m like, record? Fuck, how you gon’ put hip-hop onto a record? ’Cause it was a whole gig, you know? How you gon’ put three hours on a record? Bam! They made “Rapper’s Delight.” And the ironic twist is not how long that record was, but how short it was. I’m thinking, “Man, they cut that shit down to fifteen minutes?” It was a miracle.2 MC Chuck D [“Rapper’s Delight”] is a disco record with rapping on it. So we could do that. We were trying to make a buck.3 Richard Taninbaum (percussion) As early as May of 1979, Billboard magazine noted the growing popularity of “rapping DJs” performing live for clubgoers at New York City’s black discos.4 But it was not until September of the same year that the trend gar- nered widespread attention, with the release of the Sugarhill Gang’s “Rapper’s Delight,” a fifteen-minute track powered by humorous party rhymes and a relentlessly funky bass line that took the country by storm and introduced a national audience to rap.

  • Romanian Traditional Musical Instruments
GRU-10-P-LP-57-DJ-TR ROMANIAN TRADITIONAL MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS Romania is a European country whose population consists mainly (approx. 90%) of ethnic Romanians, as well as a variety of minorities such as German, Hungarian and Roma (Gypsy) populations. This has resulted in a multicultural environment which includes active ethnic music scenes. Romania also has thriving scenes in the fields of pop music, hip hop, heavy metal and rock and roll. During the first decade of the 21st century some Europop groups, such as Morandi, Akcent, and Yarabi, achieved success abroad. Traditional Romanian folk music remains popular, and some folk musicians have come to national (and even international) fame. ROMANIAN TRADITIONAL MUSIC Folk music is the oldest form of Romanian musical creation, characterized by great vitality; it is the defining source of the cultured musical creation, both religious and lay. Conservation of Romanian folk music has been aided by a large and enduring audience, and by numerous performers who helped propagate and further develop the folk sound. (One of them, Gheorghe Zamfir, is famous throughout the world today, and helped popularize a traditional Romanian folk instrument, the panpipes.) The earliest music was played on various pipes with rhythmical accompaniment later added by a cobza. This style can be still found in Moldavian Carpathian regions of Vrancea and Bucovina and with the Hungarian Csango minority. The Greek historians have recorded that the Dacians played guitars, and priests perform songs with added guitars. The bagpipe was popular from medieval times, as it was in most European countries, but became rare in recent times before a 20th century revival.

  • Monitoring the Cross-Border Circulation of European Music Repertoire
Monitoring the cross-border circulation of European music repertoire within the European Union Report commissioned by EMO & Eurosonic Noordeslag Emmanuel Legrand January 2012 1 About this report: The music scene in Europe is very strong, creative and diversified. Each country within the European Union has a solid local music scene. However, due to the structure of the various national markets, the existence of language diversity and different cultural behaviours, the flow of repertoire across borders within the EU is far from reflecting the notion of one single market. Although there have been embryonic attempts to document the situation of European music repertoire in Europe, the full scale of the situation has never been fully monitored. The European Music Office, in partnership with Eurosonic Noordeslag and Nielsen, has undertaken a preliminary study aimed at monitoring and analysing the cross-border flows of repertoire within the EU in 2011. The study provides quantifiable data on the circulation of repertoire with the ambition of becoming the foundation for an observatory of the circulation of repertoire in Europe. This report has been made possible with the contributions from the following organisations: [NB: the views expressed in this report are those of its author and do not represent those of EMO of Eurosonic Noordeslag.] 2 Executive Summary The study on the circulation of European repertoire within the European Union was commissioned by the European Music Office and Dutch conference and festival Eurosonic Noordeslag. Its purpose is to analyse the flow of repertoire between EU countries, based on statistical data on radio airplay and digital downloads.
