Southbank Centre Announces Nile Rodgers As Curator of Meltdown 2019 Date: Monday 11 February 2019, 8.30am Contact: Phoebe Gardiner, [email protected] / 020 7921 0967 Alexandra Shaw [email protected] / 020 7921 0676 Southbank Centre announces Nile Rodgers as curator of Meltdown 2019 Nile Rodgers © Britt Loyd Southbank Centre today reveals that the curator of Meltdown festival 2019 will be three-time Grammy Award-winning American composer, producer, arranger, guitarist, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Chairman of the Songwriters Hall of Fame and Abbey Road Studios’ first ever Chief Creative Advisor, Nile Rodgers. From 3 - 11 August, Rodgers will take over Southbank Centre with his unique creative vision. Over nine days and across the world-class stages of the Royal Festival Hall, newly reopened brutalist masterpieces the Queen Elizabeth Hall and Purcell Room, and the remainder of Southbank Centre’s 17-acre cultural quarter on the banks of the River Thames, Rodgers will present a hand-picked line-up of show-stopping music, art and free events, in what will undoubtedly be the funkiest festival of the year. Among music legends, Nile Rodgers is truly exceptional. From co-founding slick disco pioneers CHIC with his late creative partner Bernard Edwards, to his own global success as a songwriter and producer, Rodgers has contributed to records that have cumulatively sold more than 500 million albums and 75 million singles worldwide, and has left an indelible signature on the music of today. More than a collaborator, Rodgers has been instrumental in the careers of some of the biggest artists in the history of popular music. Following the incredible success of the songs he and Bernard Edwards co-wrote and produced for Sister Sledge (‘He’s The Greatest Dancer’ and ‘We Are Family’ to name but two) and Diana Ross (‘Upside Down’ and ‘I’m Coming Out’ - the biggest sellers of her career) his production on David Bowie’s 1983 album Let's Dance was a worldwide sensation. The title track became one of the best-selling UK singles of all time, galvanizing both his and Bowie’s positions in mainstream culture and remaining the greatest success of one of music’s greatest artist’s careers. Rodgers’ remix of Duran Duran’s ‘The Reflex’ became the band’s biggest-selling single and an archetype song of its time leading to an over 35 year relationship with the band; and when he produced Madonna's second album, Like A Virgin (1984) securing her first number one album and single, and the career-defining ‘Material Girl’, Rodgers undeniably hastened her rapid ascent to pop royalty selling over 25 million albums. CHIC’s 1979 number one hit ‘Good Times’ is one of the most sampled songs in history. It was most famously used in The Sugarhill Gang’s ‘Rapper’s Delight’, widely credited as the first record to break hip hop into the mainstream and setting off a paradigm in which Rodgers’ music has been used as the foundation of several new number 1 songs including Will Smith’s ‘Gettin’ Jiggy With It’ and Modjo’s ‘Lady (Hear Me Tonight)’. Rodgers has continued to set sonic trends in recent years through his work with chart-topping artists such as Avicii, Sam Smith and Disclosure. In 2014, Rodgers was again responsible for a watershed moment in electronic dance music with the single ‘Get Lucky’ from iconic French electronic duo Daft Punk’s fourth studio album, Random Access Memories, which won three Grammy Awards including Album of the Year. Also featuring Pharrell Williams as co-writer, ‘Get Lucky’ was a global critical and commercial success, topping the charts in over thirty countries and becoming one of the best-selling singles of all time, further evidencing the timelessness of the Nile Rodgers sound. ‘Get Lucky’ was followed with singles ‘Lose Yourself To Dance’ and ‘Give Life Back To Music’. In the 40 plus years since he and his prized ‘59 Fender Stratocaster (aka “The Hitmaker”) first started filling dance floors across the world, Nile Rodgers has founded the We Are Family Foundation, which powers youth around the world who are changing the game with their ideas, innovations and social good solutions, published his autobiography Le Freak: An Upside Down Story of Family, Disco and Destiny (2011), co-created soundtracks for movies such as Coming To America and the Halo computer game series, provided keynote addresses at countless global music industry conferences and festivals including 2017’s SXSW, beaten cancer twice, been inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame and Songwriters Hall Of Fame and has only in the last few months become the Chairman of the latter. Just last year he released a new album with CHIC, the Top 10 ranked It’s About Time featuring NAO, Mura Masa, Anderson .Paak, Elton John, Emeli Sande and Lady Gaga amongst many others, and led an extensive sold out UK arena tour. He was also announced as Abbey Road Studios’ first ever Chief Creative Advisor. The role sees Rodgers establish Abbey Road as his primary creative base and serve as the studios’ global ambassador within the creative community. His dedication to nurturing new talent, as well as his enduring appeal with audiences of all ages, was evident when he appeared as a guest judge on ITV 1’s The X Factor in autumn 2018. He and CHIC are currently joining forces with Cher on the America-wide Here We Go Again tour. This summer Rodgers becomes the next in an extraordinary line-up of 25 world-changing artists selected to share their vision as curators of Meltdown - from the very first curator, British composer George Benjamin in 1993, though other luminaries including Laurie Anderson, John Peel, David Bowie, Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, Morrissey, Patti Smith, Massive Attack, Yoko Ono, M.I.A and The Cure frontman Robert Smith in 2018. The festival has an unparalleled reputation among artists and is famed for providing a stage for exclusive collaborations and intimate, once-in-a-lifetime musical experiences for diverse audiences. Past performers have included Nina Simone, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Jeff Buckley who played his final UK show at Elvis Costello's Meltdown. The New York Dolls reunited for Morrissey’s curation; Patti Smith performed Horses in full for her festival; and an all-star line-up including Nick Cave, Grace Jones and Pete Doherty sang Disney songs with Jarvis Cocker at his 2007 Meltdown. Nile Rodgers said: “To be able to curate and produce nine days of live music for the city of London, the UK and music enthusiasts visiting from all over the world is truly a dream come true. Anyone who knows my career knows that Funk, Disco, Jazz, Soul, Classical, POP, New Wave, R&B, Fusion, Punk Rock, Afrobeat, Electronic and Dance music all play a role and you can expect that to be reflected in the performances we are planning. It’s all about the groove and this August everyone in London will be dancing to incredible live performances!" Bengi Ünsal, Senior Contemporary Music Programmer at Southbank Centre, said: “I am thrilled and honoured to welcome Nile Rodgers to Southbank Centre this August for the 26th Meltdown festival. Meltdown is the longest-running artist curated festival in the world and for 25 years has been celebrating those at the frontiers of music. It’s hard to overstate the impact that this year’s curator has had both as part of CHIC and as a solo producer on what we call popular music today. He is constantly creating and collaborating, and I can’t wait to see what he will create across our venues. One thing’s for certain: this will be the funkiest Meltdown yet.” # ENDS # Nile Rodgers’ Meltdown: 3-11 August 2019 Southbank Centre, London, UK First line-up details to be announced this spring. He amplifies his legacy as a multiple GRAMMY-winning composer, producer, arranger and guitarist by constantly traversing new musical terrain and successfully expanding the boundaries of popular music. As the co-founder of CHIC and the newly elected Chairman of the Songwriters Hall of Fame, Rodgers pioneered a musical language that generated chart-topping hits like “Le Freak,” (the biggest selling single in the history of Atlantic Records!) and sparked the advent of hip-hop with “Good Times”. Nile Rodgers transcends all styles of music across every generation with a body of work that’s garnered him inductions into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (2017) and the Songwriters Hall of Fame (2016). Most recently, he was appointed as the first ever Chief Creative Advisor for the legendary Abbey Road Studios to cap off a year that has included “festival best” performances at both Glastonbury and Coachella that resulted in the BBC nominating the band for the BBC Music Awards as “Best Live Performance Of 2017” and the LA Times stating “Nile Rodgers influence stretches all over Coachella, beaming the sound of a better future”. His work in the CHIC Organization and his productions for artists like David Bowie, Diana Ross, and Madonna have sold over 500 million albums and 75 million singles worldwide while his innovative, trendsetting collaborations with Daft Punk, Avicii, Sigala, Disclosure, and Sam Smith reflect the vanguard of contemporary music.

PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

TICKETS FOR TROOPS ANNUAL REVIEW 2016 The Sun Military Awards Nominees at Number 10 Downing Street: Tickets For Troops was nominated for ‘Support to Armed Forces’ FOREWORD Thanks to the tremendous philanthropy of our supporters and donors from the nation’s live sports and events industry, 2016 was another active year for Tickets For Troops. We worked closely with hundreds of ticketing professionals, agents, box offices, promoters, clubs, teams and many more groups to ensure our servicemen and women continued to enjoy the delights of the sporting, musical, theatrical and entertainment world. This wonderful generosity combined with some beavering away in the Tickets For Troops office ensured that we were able to distribute 152,652 complimentary tickets for 6,291 events to our military members. Half way through the year, we were delighted to welcome on board a new team of regional volunteers known as ambassadors who are responsible for helping to increase the number of donors in their respective regions. The volunteer opportunity attracted a large number of applications from all around the country and the overall standard was exceptionally high. It was humbling for the team to see how many people from within the forces community wanted to give something back to Tickets For Troops. The regional ambassadors are being managed by our newest employee Elisabeth Roberts - recruited on a part-time basis thanks to the Armed Forces Covenant Fund grant. We were sad to lose Anastasia Baker in October, she was a superb asset to the team with her excellent customer service manner and speedy ticket packaging skills - we wish her well for the future.

west coast music Midnight Special Please find attached the Midnight Special song list for your review. SPECIAL DANCES for Weddings: Please note that we will need your special dance requests, (I.E. First Dance, Father/Daughter Dance, Mother/Son Dance etc) FOUR WEEKS in advance prior to your event so that we can confirm that the band will be able to perform the song(s) and that we are able to locate sheet music. In some cases where sheet music is not available or an arrangement for the full band is need- ed, this gives us the time needed to properly prepare the music and learn the material. Clients are not obligated to send in a list of general song requests. Many of our clients ask that the band just react to whatever their guests are responding to on the dance floor. Our clients that do provide us with song requests do so in varying degrees. Most clients give us a handful of songs they want played and avoided. Recently, we’ve noticed in increase in cli- ents customizing what the band plays and doesn’t play with very specific detail. If you de- sire the highest degree of control (allowing the band to only play within the margin of songs requested), we ask for a minimum of 100 requests. We want you to keep in mind that the band is quite good at reading the room and choosing songs that best connect with your guests. The more specific/selective you are, know that there is greater chance of losing certain song medleys, mashups, or newly released material the band has.

  • “Rapper's Delight”
1 “Rapper’s Delight” From Genre-less to New Genre I was approached in ’77. A gentleman walked up to me and said, “We can put what you’re doing on a record.” I would have to admit that I was blind. I didn’t think that somebody else would want to hear a record re-recorded onto another record with talking on it. I didn’t think it would reach the masses like that. I didn’t see it. I knew of all the crews that had any sort of juice and power, or that was drawing crowds. So here it is two years later and I hear, “To the hip-hop, to the bang to the boogie,” and it’s not Bam, Herc, Breakout, AJ. Who is this?1 DJ Grandmaster Flash I did not think it was conceivable that there would be such thing as a hip-hop record. I could not see it. I’m like, record? Fuck, how you gon’ put hip-hop onto a record? ’Cause it was a whole gig, you know? How you gon’ put three hours on a record? Bam! They made “Rapper’s Delight.” And the ironic twist is not how long that record was, but how short it was. I’m thinking, “Man, they cut that shit down to fifteen minutes?” It was a miracle.2 MC Chuck D [“Rapper’s Delight”] is a disco record with rapping on it. So we could do that. We were trying to make a buck.3 Richard Taninbaum (percussion) As early as May of 1979, Billboard magazine noted the growing popularity of “rapping DJs” performing live for clubgoers at New York City’s black discos.4 But it was not until September of the same year that the trend gar- nered widespread attention, with the release of the Sugarhill Gang’s “Rapper’s Delight,” a fifteen-minute track powered by humorous party rhymes and a relentlessly funky bass line that took the country by storm and introduced a national audience to rap.

Nile Rodgers in New York City, 1991 68 MUSICAL EXCELLENCE Nile Rodgers HE CREATES A DISTINCTIVE SOUND ON THE RECORDS HE WRITES, PRODUCES, ARRANGES, AND PLAYS ON. BY ROB BOWMAN Nile Rodgers’ influence on popular music over the past forty years is nearly unfathomable. As a guitarist, songwriter, producer, arranger, and funkster extraordinaire, Rodgers has left his imprint on a stun- ningly wide array of genres including disco, R&B, rock, mainstream pop, hip-hop, and EDM. Looking over the breadth of his career, a case could easily be made that no single individual has had a greater impact on the sound of pop, from the late 1970s to the present day. ¶ Alongside his partner, bass player wunderkind Bernard Edwards, Rodgers wrote and produced hit after hit for Chic, Sister Sledge, and Diana Ross, tearing up both the dance floor and the radio. After Chic broke up and Rodgers and Edwards went their separate ways, Rodgers broke free of the disco moniker and reinvented himself, producing, arranging, and playing guitar on David Bowie’s come- back album, Let’s Dance (1983), and Madonna’s breakout album, 69 Like a Virgin (1984). Along the way he took INXS and Chic in their prime then Duran Duran to new heights with “Original Sin” with Rodgers and and “The Reflex,” respectively, and produced albums by Bernard Edwards Mick Jagger, Jeff Beck, the B-52s, and David Lee Roth. center stage, 1979 He played key guitar parts on Steve Winwood’s “High- er Love” and Michael Jackson’s HIStory.
