Joseph A. Rosen Rhythm andBluesCruise,Rhythm October 2007. onthe Legendary Joe LouisWalker In 1985, after a decade of playing and singing nothing but gospel music with a quartet called the Spiritual Corinthians, 35-year-old Joe Louis Walker decided to get back to the blues. The San Francisco–born singer-guitarist had begun playing blues when he was 14, at first with a band of relatives and then with blues-singing pimp Fillmore Slim before becoming a fixture at the Matrix, the city’s preeminent rock club during the psychedelic Summer of Love, backing such visiting artists as Earl Hooker and Magic Sam. Michael Bloomfield became a close friend and mentor. The two musicians lived together for a period, and the famous guitarist even produced a Walker demo for Buddah Records, though nothing came of it. Then, in 1975, Walker walked away from the blues completely in order to escape the fast life and the drugs and alcohol associated with it that he saw negatively affecting Bloomfield and other musician friends. Walker knew nothing about the blues business when he started doing blues gigs again around the Bay Area with a band he’d put together, as a member of Oakland blues singer-guitarist Haskell “Cool Papa” Sadler’s band, and (for a tour of Europe) with the ad hoc Mississippi Delta Blues Band.

  • Nile Rodgers in New York City, 1991
Nile Rodgers in New York City, 1991 68 MUSICAL EXCELLENCE Nile Rodgers HE CREATES A DISTINCTIVE SOUND ON THE RECORDS HE WRITES, PRODUCES, ARRANGES, AND PLAYS ON. BY ROB BOWMAN Nile Rodgers’ influence on popular music over the past forty years is nearly unfathomable. As a guitarist, songwriter, producer, arranger, and funkster extraordinaire, Rodgers has left his imprint on a stun- ningly wide array of genres including disco, R&B, rock, mainstream pop, hip-hop, and EDM. Looking over the breadth of his career, a case could easily be made that no single individual has had a greater impact on the sound of pop, from the late 1970s to the present day. ¶ Alongside his partner, bass player wunderkind Bernard Edwards, Rodgers wrote and produced hit after hit for Chic, Sister Sledge, and Diana Ross, tearing up both the dance floor and the radio. After Chic broke up and Rodgers and Edwards went their separate ways, Rodgers broke free of the disco moniker and reinvented himself, producing, arranging, and playing guitar on David Bowie’s come- back album, Let’s Dance (1983), and Madonna’s breakout album, 69 Like a Virgin (1984). Along the way he took INXS and Chic in their prime then Duran Duran to new heights with “Original Sin” with Rodgers and and “The Reflex,” respectively, and produced albums by Bernard Edwards Mick Jagger, Jeff Beck, the B-52s, and David Lee Roth. center stage, 1979 He played key guitar parts on Steve Winwood’s “High- er Love” and Michael Jackson’s HIStory. More recent- ly he cowrote and played guitar on Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky,” winning two Grammy Awards in the process.

  • Yamaha Announces Formation of U.S. Based Yamaha Guitar Group, Inc
PRESS RELEASE Yamaha Guitar Group, Inc. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE YAMAHA ANNOUNCES FORMATION OF U.S. BASED YAMAHA GUITAR GROUP, INC. New organization will be dedicated to developing and marketing Yamaha and Line 6 products for guitarists worldwide Calabasas, CA—March 26, 2018 – Yamaha today announced the formation of a new U.S.-based wholly owned subsidiary, Yamaha Guitar Group, Inc., which will bring together the intercompany teams that have been focused on serving the needs of guitarists worldwide. Building on a long history as a leading guitar company, Yamaha demonstrated their commitment to the future of the global guitar market when they acquired Line 6 in 2014. As a leader in tech-forward segments of the guitar industry, Line 6 brought with it a family of digital electric guitars, amps, and effects to complement the extensive line-up of acoustic and electric guitars, basses, and amps that Yamaha has offered customers for over half a century. Since the acquisition, the growing collaboration between the two complementary brands led to the formation of a dedicated Guitar Division headquartered in Japan at Yamaha Corporation in April 2017, with Line 6, Inc. being included within this division. Shoji Mita, based in Japan, and Marcus Ryle, based in the U.S., were named co-general managers of this new division. Throughout 2017, this new formation led to expanded collaboration in strategy, development, sales, marketing, and artist relations, including the relocation of Yamaha Artist Services, Los Angeles to the same California campus as Line 6. With the formation of Yamaha Guitar Group, Inc. (YGG), effective April 1, 2018, the natural evolution of these collaborative efforts becomes formalized within one multi- brand organization, with a dedicated team committed to producing and marketing the very best products and services for guitarists under both the Yamaha and Line 6 brands.
