When writing these notes, reference was made to the lecture notes ‘Polders’ by Prof. ir. J.L. Klein (1966) and ‘Polders and flood control’ by Prof. ir. R. Bijlage 4 Nadere duiding visie leefbaarheid kernen (door wethouder Van Haeften) LEEFBAARHEID KERNEN Schets van de kernen Halfweg Halfweg is, net als Spaarndam, een grotere woonkern binnen de gemeente. De N200, de spoorverbinding Haarlem – Amsterdam en het Zijkanaal F delen het dorp in vieren. Er liggen twee grotere woongebieden ten oosten van het Zijkanaal F, ten noorden en ten zuiden van de provinciale weg en de spoorlijn. In het woongebied ten zuiden van de N200 liggen de meeste voorzieningen. Dit gebied heeft een centrumfunctie. Ten westen van het Zijkanaal F en ten zuiden van de provinciale weg ligt het terrein van de voormalige suikerfabriek, nu omgedoopt tot ‘Sugar City’. Ten noorden van de spoorlijn, ligt een klein woongebied in de vorm van een lint. De lintbebouwing staat vooral langs de Houtrakkerweg, de Bauduinlaan en de Spaarndammerweg. De centrale ligging in de noordvleugel van de Randstad, de nabijheid van groen en recreatie, de kleinschaligheid, het sociale karakter en de goede (onderwijs)voorzieningen zijn belangrijke kwaliteiten. Daarbij komt dat Halfweg de meest stedelijke kern is van de gemeente en er is een sterke band met het naastgelegen ‘tweelingdorp’ Zwanenburg. Spaarndam Het dorp Spaarndam ligt in twee gemeenten: in Haarlemmerliede en Spaarnwoude en in Haarlem. De oude kern is een van de eerste beschermde dorpsgezichten in Nederland en ligt grotendeels in Haarlem. De gemeentegrens wordt gevormd door de Grote Sluis, de sluis tussen Zijkanaal C en het Spaarne. Het nieuwe deel van Spaarndam ligt in Haarlemmerliede en Spaarnwoude. Spaarndam kenmerkt zich als woonkern binnen de gemeente Haarlemmerliede en Spaarnwoude. Er zijn voorzieningen aanwezig, zoals een dorpshuis, detailhandel en sportvoorzieningen aan de rand van het dorp. -

Nijland TNO Built Environment & Geosciences, Delft, The Netherlands ABSTRACT: The 20th century built heritage is one of the new conservation challenges, due to its architectural differences from the traditional heritage and new materials. One major new material is concrete; its quantity and importance for the new heritage requires a tailored conservation approach. Until now, there is a dependence on a repair approach. The dangers of such an approach for the cultural-historical values of the original concrete will be shown by the means of a case study, Fort Bezuiden Spaarndam (1901), part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Defence Line of Amsterdam. An underlying problem is that concrete is too young for conservation experts, causing a dependence on concrete repair expertises. The used repair techniques are developed for structural aims, not integrating conservation aims. Het mag dan al niet steeds op de voorgrond treden als Amsterdam, toch vinden wij ook telkenmale Haarlem genoemd en speelt het een rol in verschillende belangrijke gebeurtenissen. Ook is Haarlem te beschouwen als het type van een Hollandse stad, door handel en nijverheid opkomende in de Middeleeuwen, in voile bloei, zowel door deze nijverheid als ook door de kunst in de gouden eeuw, om in de I 8e eeuw in matheid en sleur te vervalien, totdat het, na zijn zwartste tijd gedurende de Franse overheersing te hebben doorgemaakt, in de i 9e eeuw weer langzaam tot opbloei komt. Een afzonderlijke geschiedenis van Haarlem is daarom wel op zijn plaats, vooral ook, omdat in Haarlem nog zoveel van het oude is terug te vinden, hetzij in wezen, hetzij in naam, wat ongetwijfeld de geschiedenis van voorbije eeuwen tot een meer levend iets maakt. Het moge mij gegeven zijn, in de volgende bladzijden in het kort deze geschiedenis uiteen te zetten en tevens op de ons nog resterende overblijfselen uit vroeger dagen te kunnen wijzen. Van de jongste geschiedenis zal men echter in dit boekje alleen datgene vinden, wat met het oude in direct verband staat. -
